MODELING HARVEST SCHEDULING IN MULTIFUNCTIONAL PLANNING OF FORESTS FOR LONGTERM WATER YIELD OPTIMIZATION

In this study, wood production and hydrologic functions of forests were accommodated within a planning procedure for separate working circles (areas dedicated to certain forest functions) that were delineated according to an Ecosystem‐Based Functional Planning approach. Mixed integer goal programming was used as the optimization technique. The timing and scheduling of a maintenance cutting (partial harvest) was the decision variable in the modeling effort, and an original formulation was developed as a multiobjective planning procedure. Four sample planning strategies were developed and model outputs were evaluated according to these strategies. Spatial characteristics of stands were considered, and used to prohibit the regeneration of adjacent stands during the same time period. Because of the positive relationship between qualified water production and standing timber volume in the forest, the model attempts to maximize qualified water production levels by increasing standing volume stocks in the forest through the delay of regeneration activities.     

Decentralized Business Strategies in a Multi-Unit Firm

In a multi-unit firm, such as a retail chain or a multi-plant manufacturer, we compare the business strategies developed by unit managers with the strategies that maximize corporate profit. The setting is one in which units face different markets and where learning spillovers between two units are enhanced if their strategies are more similar. When there is a small number of units, we find a tendency for managers' strategies to be excessively tailored to their local market. When the firm has many units, unit strategies can be either excessively or insufficiently standardized.     

Centrality dependence of charged-hadron transverse-momentum spectra in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV

Investigation of amine and polyol functionality in extracts of polyurethane wound management dressings using MALDI-MS

Polyurethane (PU) foams used in wound management are produced by a reaction between aromatic diisocyanates and polyether polyols. There is concern that residues of these starting materials, which may contain aromatic amine functionality, may leach from the finished polymer during in vivo applications. Furthermore, oligomers and additives may be leached from the PU system after the polymerization process is complete. Finished polymers have, therefore, been extracted with a range of solvents, such as water, diethyl ether and dilute HCl. The extracts were subjected to MALDI-MS (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry) analysis in an attempt to determine the amine and polyol functionality. Direct MALDI-MS analysis of the wound dressing extracts indicated the presence of components based on the polyols [corrected] used in the formulation of the foam. The spacing between the peaks identified the base monomer used in the polyol. MALDI-MS analysis of the fluorescamine derivatives of model amine compounds has demonstrated the anticipated increase in mass (278 for monoamines and 278 and 556 for diamines). Similar results were obtained from the derivatization of model polyols with phenyl isocyanate, where the mass shift (n x 119) was a direct measure of the number of active hydroxyl groups. Fluorescamine labelling of PU foams shows the colour change which could be [corrected] indicative of the presence of an amine, but the subsequent MALDI-MS analysis was unable to demonstrate the anticipated increase in mass.     

A quantitative measure of the reliability of searches of spectral libraries

A quantitative measure of library search reliability has been developed. Applications of the quantitative reliability metric (QRM) for evaluating the reliability of library searches for unknown target spectra and the use of this measure to detect the failure of a library search caused by noise, contaminant peaks and missing library spectra are discussed. The effects of noise and composite infrared spectra of mixtures on the QRM are examined for test sets of 561 infrared spectra. The QRM is also used to evaluate the performance of a search of an infrared library compressed by eigenvector projection.
