Tandem Three‐Component Synthesis of syn‐1,2‐ and syn‐1,3‐Diol Derivatives

The development of efficient methods for stereocontrolled synthesis of polyol derivatives has been of continuing interest for the synthetic community. We describe herein tandem olefin cross‐metathesis/hemiacetalization/intramolecular oxa‐Michael addition of allylic/homoallylic alcohols, α,β‐unsaturated ketones, and aldehydes, which enabled the synthesis of syn‐1,2‐ and syn‐1,3‐diol derivatives in a step‐economical manner. A series of differentially protected polyol derivatives could be obtained in subsequent transformations via chemoselective/regioselective cleavage of the acetal moiety of the tandem reaction products.     

Novel Mg-responsive fluorescent chemosensor based on benzo-15-crown-5 possessing 1-naphthaleneacetamide moiety

A new fluorescent ionophore for Mg²⁺, 4′-(1-naphthaleneacetamido)benzo-15-crown-5 (1), was synthesized, and its complexation behavior in acetonitrile was investigated by means of UV and fluorescence spectrometry. In the absence of a metal ion, the naphthalene moiety showed quite weak fluorescence emission (fluorescence ‘Off’ state). On the other hand, after the addition of Mg²⁺, fluorescence emission from the naphthalene moiety increased (fluorescence ‘On’ state).     

Continuous-wave all-solid-state 244 nm deep-ultraviolet laser source by fourth-harmonic generation of an optically pumped semiconductor laser using CsLiB6O10 in an external resonator

We report an all-solid-state laser system that generates over 200 mW cw at 244 nm. An optically pumped semiconductor laser is internally frequency doubled to 488 nm. The 488 nm output is coupled to an external resonator, where it is converted to 244 nm using a CsLiB(6)O(10) (CLBO) crystal. The output power is limited by the available power at 488 nm, and no noticeable degradation in output power was observed over a period of several hours.
