Aglairubine: Structure Revision of a Chemotaxonomically Interesting Bisamide in Aglaia (Meliaceae)

 The bisamide aglairubine was isolated from different Aglaia species. The original structure was revised on the basis of FDMS and 2D-NMR data. Since all isolates were obtained from species belonging to the section Amoora of the genus Aglaia, aglairubine might serve as a taxonomic marker.     

Newton’s iterates can converge to non-stationary points

In this note we discuss the convergence of Newton’s method for minimization. We present examples in which the Newton iterates satisfy the Wolfe conditions and the Hessian is positive definite at each step and yet the iterates converge to a non-stationary point. These examples answer a question posed by Fletcher in his 1987 book Practical methods of optimization.

Zusammenfassung Aromatische Carbonsäurebromide werden durch Bestrahlung mit Licht der Wellenlänge 254 nm in äther. Lösung mit 60–80% Ausbeute zu aromatischen Aldehyden reduziert. Die Reaktion wird durch Photolyse der Acyl-Halogen-Bindung eingeleitet und läuft mit einer Quantenausbeute von etwa 0,25 ab.

Photoreactions of carboxylic acid derivatives VII: Photoreduction of aroylbromides forming aldehydes

Reduction of aromatic acyl bromides in ethereal solution by illumination with the Hg-low pressure lamp (254 nm) leads to aromatic aldehydes in 60–80% yield. The reaction starts with photolysis of the acyl-halogen bond which proceeds with a quantum efficiency of approximately 0.25.

A family of rotating disks as sources of the Kerr metric

A method of constructing a family of regular rotating disks as sources of the Kerr metric is discussed. The algebraic type of the energy-momentum tensor is analyzed, and it is found that none of the disks satisfies the dominant energy condition and, in some cases, even the weak energy condition is violated. Therefore, if the constructed family includes the totality of sources for the Kerr metric with a disk-like topology, then any physically satisfactory source will not have a disk structure.     

Some Galois groups over number fields

Some conditions are stated which imply that certain finite groups are Galois groups over some number fields and related fields.
