Synthesis and optical properties of (a)chiral terpyridine-ruthenium complexes

Chiral terpyridine ligands have been synthesized and characterized. By applying Ru(III)/Ru(II) chemistry, symmetrical as well as asymmetrical bis-terpyridine ruthenium(II) complexes were obtained. These materials were fully characterized and their optical properties investigated. While the chiral metal complexes revealed no Cotton effect in good solvents such as chloroform, CD-measurements in dodecane showed an effect in both ligand and MLCT regions, suggesting chirality transfer from the lateral alkyl chains to the complex core. This behavior points to the formation of supramolecular aggregates in dodecane. Furthermore, the analogous achiral ligand and its corresponding ruthenium(II) complexes were prepared.     

Computerized, comprehensive databases of cellular and secreted proteins from normal human embryonic lung MRC-5 fibroblasts: identification of transformation and/or proliferation sensitive proteins

Databases of protein information from human embryonal lung fibroblasts (MRC-5) have been established using computer analyzed two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. One thousand four hundred and eighty-two cellular proteins (1060 with isoelectric focusing and 422 with nonequilibrium pH gradient electrophoresis, in the first dimension) ranging in molecular mass between 8 and 234 kDa were separated and numbered. Information entered in the database (in most cases for major proteins) includes: protein name, HeLa protein catalog number, mouse protein catalog number, proteins matched in transformed human epithelial amnion cells (AMA) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), transformation and/or proliferation sensitive proteins, synthesis in quiescent cells, cell cycle regulated proteins, mitochondrial and heat shock proteins, cytoskeletal proteins and proteins whose synthesis is affected by interferons. Additional information entered for a few transformation-sensitive proteins that have been selected for future studies includes levels of synthesis and amounts in fetal human tissues. A total of four hundred and seventy-six [35S]methionine labeled polypeptides (258 isoelectric focusing; 218, nonequilibrium pH gradient electrophoresis) secreted by MRC-5 fibroblasts were separated and recorded (J. E. Celis et al., Leukemia 1987, 1, 707-717). Information entered in this database includes molecular weight and transformation sensitive proteins. These databases, as well as those of epithelial and lymphoid cell proteins (J. E. Celis et al., Leukemia 1988, 9, 561-601), represent the initial stages of a systematic effort to establish comprehensive databases of human protein information. In the long run, these databases are expected to offer a useful framework in which to focus the human genome sequencing effort.     

Synthesis of 2-acyl-3-methylthiofurans from 3-methylthio-2-pentene-1,5-dione enolates

2-Acyl-3-methylthiofurans 3 are obtained in fair yields from 3-methylthio-2-pentene-1,5-dione enolates 1 by reaction with iodine. In a similar reaction 1-phenyl-3-methylthio-4-nitro-2-buten-1-one gave 3-methylthio-2-nitro-5-phenylfuran 11. In the crystalline state the 2-benzoyl-3-methylthio-5-phenylfuran 3b showed a non-bonded sulfur-oxygen interaction as inferred from an X-ray diffraction determination, with a S····O distance of 2.871(5)Å.     

Kinetik und mechanismus der elektrochemischen reduktion von 2,2′-dipyridyl I. Primärprozesse: Vorgelagerte isomerisierung eines komplexes

Polarography and chronopotentiometry are used to study the primary processes of the reduction of 2,2′-bipyridine at mercury electrodes in aqueous solutions (12 < pH < 14). Bipyridine and its first reduction product are strongly adsorbed. The reduction is preceded by a complex equilibrium between bipyridine and the cation of the supporting electrolyte (Li, Na, K, Ba). Due to the great excess of the cations, the equilibrium is shifted completely to the side of the complex, which exists as cis- and trans-isomer. The cis-form is more stable, forming a chelate, the trans-form however is more easily reducible. The kinetic and thermodynamic data of the isomerization are determined. The first reduction product reacts irreversibly giving a substance which can be reoxidized to bipyridine via a radical intermediate.     

Circular dichroism of sesquiterpene-umbelliferone ethers and structure elucidation of a new derivative isolated from the gum resin “Asa Foetida”

The CD spectra of 16 naturally occurring sesquiterpene-umbelliferone ethers, including the complete set of farnesiferol A isomers with all acetates and 6-oxoderivatives, are reported over the significant wavelength range of 350–200 nm. 11 compounds were isolated from an Asa Foetida sample and 5 further derivatives, already known as natural products, were obtained by acetylation orJones oxidation. In addition, a new compound — kamolonol (14) — was isolated. Its structure is characterized by twofold methyl migration in the drimenol derived sesquiterpene moiety.¹H-NMR, MS, IR, UV, and CD data of the new compound are discussed.Herrn Prof. Dr.K. A contribution to the trace analysis of high-purity iron by atomic spectrometry (flame-AAS, furnace-AAS, ICP-OES)

Summary Various possibilities for the determination of trace impurities in high-purity iron by atomic spectrometry were investigated in detail. For Ba, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti and V, flame AAS, furnace AAS and ICP-OES were firstly evaluated in terms of their power of detection. Detection limits in the g/g-range could be achieved by direct determination. For determination in the ng/g-range a removal of iron by a solvent extraction technique prior to the instrumental measurement was required. The power of detection of direct determination, and of combined procedures were compared with regard to routine applicability and a minimization of systematic errors.     

First Direct Synthesis of Optically Active 3-Methylcyclopentene

(?)-(S)- and (+)-(R)-3-methylcyclopentene (1) has been prepared in a stereochemically unambiguous synthesis. The (S)-configuration for (?)-1 was confirmed by correlation with (?)-(S)-1-methylindane.

Characterization of silsesquioxanes by size-exclusion chromatography and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Liquid chromatography in combination with spectroscopic methods like matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful method to characterize silsesquioxanes and silsesquioxane mixtures. As new examples, the formation of silsesquioxyl-substituted silsesquioxanes [(n-octyl)(7)(SiO(1.5))(8)](2)O and [(n-octyl)(7)(SiO(1.5))(8)O](2)[(n-octyl)(6)(SiO(1.5))(8)] as well as the cage rearrangement of octa-[(n-heptyl)silsesquioxane] to larger structures [(n-heptyl)SiO(1.5))](n) up to n=28 are shown.     

The analysis of C4–C11 hydrocarbons in naphtha and reformate with a new apolar fused silica column

This paper deals with the separation of alkanes, naphthenes, and aromatic compounds in naphtha and reformate, on a newly developed apolar high resolution GC column. The selectivity of this apolar phase has been compared with those of squalane, DB-1, and SE-30. A total of 95 hydrocarbons were reliably identified, mostly by GC-MS. Repeated measurements of Kováts retention indices are presented as evidence for the reproducible manufacture of fused silica columns coated with this phase.
