Cycloaddition of annulated cyclohexa-2,4-dienones and novel reduction of halogen at bridgehead: an expedient route to tetracyclo[6.5.2.0.0]pentadec-2(7),11-dien-14-one and framework of conidiogenol and conidiogenone

An expedient route to tetracyclo[6.5.2.0^2,7.0^9,13]pentadec-2(7),11-dien-14-one and tetracyclic framework of conidiogenol have been reported. Cycloaddition of annulated cyclohexa-2,4-dienone with cyclopentadiene, photochemical oxa-di-π-methane reaction and a highly unusual dehalogenation of bridgehead halogen are the key features of our methodology.     

Regioselective ortho‐Metallation of 2‐Diphenylphosphanylpyridine and (2‐(2‐Diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)‐1‐3‐dioxalane with Methyltetrakis(trimethylphosphane)cobalt(I)

Co(CH₃)(PMe₃)₄ forms 100 % regioselectively with (2‐(2‐diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)‐1,3‐dioxalane and 2‐diphenylphosphanyl‐pyridine, by elimination of methane, the four‐membered metallacycles Co{(C₃O₂HC₆H₃)P(C₆H₅)₂}(PMe₃)₃ ( 1 ) and Co{(CNC₄H₃)P(C₆H₅)₂}(PMe₃)₃ ( 4 ). The regioselectivity is independent of the steric requirement of the ortho substituent in the 2‐diphenylphosphanylaryl‐ligands. Oxidative addition with iodomethane transforms 1 and 4 into octahedral, diamagnetic low‐spin d⁶ complexes Co(CH₃)I‐{(C₃O₂HC₆H₃)P(C₆H₅)₂}(PMe₃)₂ ( 2 ) and Co(CH₃)I‐{(CNC₄H₃)P(C₆H₅)₂}(PMe₃)₂ ( 5 ). Under an atmosphere of carbon monoxide, insertion into the Co‐C bond results in ring expansion by forming the new assembled phosphanylbenzoyl complexes Co{(C₄O₃HC₆H₃)‐P(C₆H₅)₂}CO(PMe₃)₂ ( 3 ) and Co{(OCNC₄H₃)P(C₆H₅)₂}CO(PMe₃)₂ ( 6 ). The three different types of cobaltacycles are supported by X‐ray diffraction of 1 , 3 , 5 and 6 .     

Robust surgery loading

We consider the robust surgery loading problem for a hospital’s operating theatre department, which concerns assigning surgeries and sufficient planned slack to operating room days. The objective is to maximize capacity utilization and minimize the risk of overtime, and thus cancelled patients. This research was performed in collaboration with the Erasmus MC, a large academic hospital in the Netherlands, which has also provided historical data for the experiments. We propose various constructive heuristics and local search methods that use statistical information on surgery durations to exploit the portfolio effect, and thereby to minimize the required slack. We demonstrate that our approach frees a lot of operating room capacity, which may be used to perform additional surgeries. Furthermore, we show that by combining advanced optimization techniques with extensive historical statistical records on surgery durations can significantly improve the operating room department utilization.
