Sulfate-reducing bacteria and their by-products, such as iron sulfides, are widely distributed in groundwater and sediments, and can affect subsurface aqueous chemistry. Here we show the catalytic reduction of hexavalent uranium by FeS particles, which were largely generated by the activities of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and D. vulgaris in anaerobic condition. Characterization of FeS particles by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of mackinawite having thin and flexible platy sheets with 0.5-nm lamellar spacing. This biogenic phase mediated abiotic reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) which was confirmed by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. The U conversion occurred through surface catalysis that involved adsorption of aqueous U(VI)–carbonate complexes (predominantly UO2(CO3) 3 4? ) onto the mackinawite, but the transformed uranium was then released and remained in suspended form in the solution phase. This surface catalysis and subsequent U(IV) remobilization has not been reported as a pathway to occur under sulfate-reducing conditions. Our results suggest that the iron sulfide solid, which is characteristic of conductive property, is very sensitive and variable depending on the electron supplying and transferring environment, negatively affecting the surface uranium to be strongly stabilized and fixed on the FeS surface. 相似文献

Reaction of 3‐(2‐methoxyphenyl)‐2‐sulfanylpropenoic acid [H2(o‐mpspa)] with SnPh3OH in the presence of di‐isopropylamine resulted in the formation of the complex [HQ][SnPh3(o‐mpspa)] (where HQ = di‐isopropylammonium cation and o‐mpspa = 3‐(2‐methoxyphenyl)‐2‐sulfanylpropenoato), which was characterized by mass spectrometry and vibrational spectroscopy, as well as by 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy. The single‐crystal X‐ray structural analysis of the new complex shows a trigonal‐bipyramidal coordination geometry around the Sn atom where o‐mpspa behaves as a bidentate chelating ligand. Dimeric units arise from the existence of N? H…O hydrogen bonds between the NH2 group of the di‐isopropylammonium cation and the oxygen atoms of the two neighbouring carboxylato groups. High-speed cine and video photographs were used to capture the flow patterns of a column of water jet impinging into a pool of water. The impact results in air entrainment into water in the form of a void with no mixing between the water in the jet and the surrounding water. Conservation of fluid momentum shows that the rate of increase of the height of the air void depends on the drag coefficient of the jet front. By neglecting the frictional losses, the application of energy conservation yields an expression that relates the maximum height of the air void with the properties of the water jet. 相似文献

We have examined the self-assembled membrane-bound aggregates of two annexin V (A5) dye conjugates and compared them to those from native A5. Native A5 and FITC-labeled A5 (A5-FITC) both formed discrete well-defined crystalline monolayer domains of p6 symmetry. However, A5-FITC also showed additional domains with a corrugated appearance not observed in native A5. In contrast, Cy3-labeled A5 (A5-Cy3) showed a mixture of crystalline monolayer and irregular multilayered domains, with the ratio of the two types varying significantly from sample to sample, and also required a much longer incubation time than native A5 and A5-FITC. When A5-FITC and A5-Cy3 were co-incubated on the same bilayer, well-defined crystalline monolayer domains containing both A5-FITC and A5-Cy3 were consistently observed at a much shorter incubation time than that of pure A5-Cy3 alone, indicating that A5-FITC facilitates the inclusion of A5-Cy3. These results suggest that dye labels can affect A5 2D self-assembly and crystal formation on membrane surfaces. 相似文献

A novel solid-state reference electrode was developed by combining nanoporous Pt with polyelectrolyte junction. The polyelectrolyte junction was formed in the microchannel connecting the nanoporous Pt and the sample solution, and had layer-by-layer structure of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. The layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte junction effectively blocked the mass transport of ions and maintains constant pH environments on the surface of the nanoporous Pt. The assembly of the polyelectrolyte junction and the nanoporous Pt, which produced reportedly a stable open-circuit potential in response to constant pH, exhibited outstanding performance as a solid-state reference electrode (e.g., excellent reproducibility of ±4 mV (n = 5), good long term stability of ±1 mV (for 50 h), and independence of solution environments like pH and ionic strength). A working principle of the solid-state reference electrode with layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte junction was suggested in terms of the roles of each layer and the effect of the neighboring layer. As a demonstrative application of the solid-state reference electrode, a miniaturized chip-type solid-state pH sensor comprised of two nanoporous Pt electrodes and a micro-patterned layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte junction was developed. The solid-state pH sensing chip showed reliable pH responses without liquid junction and successfully worked in a variety of buffers, beverages, and biological samples, showing its potential utility for practical applications. We report the synthesis of graphenes with tunable properties due to the growth of needlelike iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles on their surfaces. The electrical conductivity, flexibility, and magnetic properties of graphene nanosheets (GNSs) could be tuned on demand by fine controlling both the surface coverage and the length of the IO nanoneedles. The degree of coverage of the IO nanoparticles on the surface of the GNSs made it possible to control the resulting properties of the IO/GNSs on demand. As examples of their utility, paperlike materials were generated by simple filtration, and the resulting IO/GNS nanocomposites showed extraordinary removal capacity and fast adsorption rates for As(V) and Cr(VI) ions in water. Another possible application is the preparation of multifunctional films equipped with conductivity, flexibility, and magnetic properties. The fabrication process is easy to scale up at a low cost. In addition, both the colloidal solution and film forms of the resulting IO/GNSs were effective for removal of heavy metal ions, meaning this material could be utilized for actual industrial applications. 相似文献
