XPS Study of the Corrosion Protection of Fluorozirconate Glasses Dip-Coated with SnO2 Transparent Thin Films

Tin oxide nanoparticles prepared by an aqueous sol–gel method were deposited by dip-coating on fluorozirconate glass, ZBLAN (53%ZrF₄-20%BaF₂-4%LaF₃-3%AlF₃-20%NaF) to improve its resistance against wet corrosion. The aqueous leaching of uncoated and SnO₂-coated fluorozirconate glass was studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and it was shown that even an ultra thin tin dioxide film provides good protection of the glass surface against the bulk propagation of the hydrolytic attack.     

Infrared spectrum and structural assignment of the water trimer anion

The bending vibrational spectrum of the perdeutero isotopomer of the water trimer anion has been measured and compared with spectra calculated using the MP2, CCSD, and Becke3LYP electronic structure methods. Due to its low electron binding energy (approximately 150 meV), only the OD bending region of the IR spectrum of (D2O)3(-) is accessible experimentally, with electron ejection dominating at higher photon energies. The calculated spectrum of the isomer having three water molecules arranged in a chain agrees best with the experimental spectrum. In the chain isomer, the excess electron is bound to the terminal water monomer with two dangling OH groups. This is consistent with the electron binding mechanism established previously for the (H2O)n(-) (n = 2, 4-6) anions.     

Logical analysis of data—An overview: From combinatorial optimization to medical applications

The paper presents a review of the basic concepts of the Logical Analysis of Data (LAD), along with a series of discrete optimization models associated to the implementation of various components of its general methodology, as well as an outline of applications of LAD to medical problems. The combinatorial optimization models described in the paper represent variations on the general theme of set covering, including some with nonlinear objective functions. The medical applications described include the development of diagnostic and prognostic systems in cancer research and pulmonology, risk assessment among cardiac patients, and the design of biomaterials.

Chains of coupled square dielectric optical microcavities

Chains of coupled square dielectric cavities are investigated in a 2-D setting, by means of a quasi-analytical eigenmode expansion method. Resonant transfer of optical power can be achieved along quite arbitrary, moderately long rectangular paths (up to 9 coupled cavities are considered), even with individual standing-wave resonators of limited quality. We introduce an ab-initio coupled mode model, based on a simple superposition of slab mode profiles as a template for the field of individual cavities. Although no loss mechanisms are built in, the model can still help to interprete the results of the former numerical experiments.     

Nucleon form factors in dispersion theory

In the initial stage of the bottom-up picture of thermalization in heavy-ion collisions, the gluon distribution is highly anisotropic which can give rise to plasma instability. This has not been taken into account in our original paper (Phys. Lett. B 632, 257 (2006) hep-ph/0505164). It is shown that in the presence of instability there are scaling solutions, which depend on one parameter, that match smoothly onto the late stage of bottom-up when thermalization takes place.-1
