Charged particle productions at 90° in the center of mass in very high energy proton-proton collisions

The transverse momentum distribution at 90° of pions, protons and antiprotons have been measured at the CERN intersecting storage rings for C.M. energies between 23.2 and 52.7 GeV. In this energy range, the pion and proton distributions are almost energy independent. The antiproton production rises by a factor of two between 23.2 and 52.7 GeV.

Oriented Sn⁺ ions in the (5s5p²)⁴P_{$\text{1}\text{2}$} level are produced by Penning collisions between Sn atoms in the ground state and optically oriented He (2³S₁) metastable atoms. If r.f. transitions are induced in the 2³S₁ He level, the circularly polarized light emitted by the ions in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field is modulated at the r.f. frequency; the variation of the degree of modulation with the r.f. frequency allows a determination of the lifetime τ' of the ion level. The lifetime and the Landé g-factor of the Sn⁺ (⁴P_{$\text{1}\text{2}$}) level are also measured by direct magnetic resonance. The line shape is also computed when the resonances of the He atom and of the Sn⁺ ion overlap; the experimental signals are in good agreement with this computation.     

Constructive and destructive interference in acoustic emission during fatigue crack propagation

Fatigue crack propagation monitoring with acoustic emission reveals the presence of maxima and minima in the curve of the count rate as a function of the stress intensity factor. This is explained in terms of constructive and destructive interference due to specimen geometry. A theoretical model is developed and experimental proof of the validity of the model is presented.     

A study of high transverse momentum η and π0 mesons at the CERN ISR

The production of high transverse momentum η mesons from proton-proton collisions has been studied at the CERN ISR. The decay η→γγ was identified in an array of lead-glass ?erenkov counters. The preliminary results, obtained at a total centre-of-mass energy √s=52.7 GeV, show an η signal, which amounts to approximately one half of the π⁰ cross-section for centre-of-mass transverse momenta between 3 and 5 GeV/c. The production of high transverse momentum π⁰'s was also measured and compared with previous results.     

Stability of travelling waves in a model for conical flames in two space dimensions

This paper deals with the question of the stability of conical-shaped solutions of a class of reaction-diffusion equations in . One first proves the existence of travelling waves solutions with conical-shaped level sets, generalizing earlier results by Bonnet, Hamel and Monneau [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 31 (1999) 80-118; Comm. Partial Differential Equations 25 (2000) 769-819]. One then gives a characterization of the global attractor of these semilinear parabolic equations under some conical asymptotic conditions. Lastly, the global stability of the travelling waves solutions is proved.     

Simple technique for measuring the Goos-Hänchen effect with polarization modulation and a position-sensitive detector

An original approach to directly measuring the Goos-H?nchen longitudinal shift between TE and TM polarization states during a total internal reflection is introduced. The technique is based on the modulation of the polarization state of a laser by an electro-optic modulator combined with a precise measurement of the resulting spatial displacement with a position-sensitive detector. This method presents many advantages over other techniques and allows measurements at different wavelengths over a broad range for the incident angle.     

Elliptic Eigenvalue Problems with Large Drift and Applications to Nonlinear Propagation Phenomena

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behaviour of the principal eigenvalue of some linear elliptic equations in the limit of high first-order coefficients. Roughly speaking, one of the main results says that the principal eigenvalue, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, is bounded as the amplitude of the coefficients of the first-order derivatives goes to infinity if and only if the associated dynamical system has a first integral, and the limiting eigenvalue is then determined through the minimization of the Dirichlet functional over all first integrals. A parabolic version of these results, as well as other results for more general equations, are given. Some of the main consequences concern the influence of high advection or drift on the speed of propagation of pulsating travelling fronts.The third author was partially supported by a NSF grant.     

Observation of high transverse momentum electrons at the CERN ISR

A search for high transverse momentum electrons directly produced in proton-proton collisions has been performed at the CERN ISR. The apparatus included a magnetic spectrometer with wire spark chambers, a lead-glass counter array, and a threshold gas ?erenkov counter. At a centre-of-mass energy √s = 52.7 GeV, a signal has been observed in the range $\text{1.6<p}{}_{\mathrm{T}}{}^1\text{<4.7}\text{GeV}\text{/c}$. The signal occurs at a level of approximately 10^?4 of the inclusive pion cross-section.
