Abstract Polymer chain diffusion in the nematic mesophase was studied using a model main chain liquid crystalline (LC) polyether based on 2,2′-dimethyl-4,4′-dihydroxyazoxybenzene and mixed alkane spacers. A side chain LC polymethacrylate containing an azobenzene mesogenic group was also investigated. Tracer diffusion coefficients were determined as a function of temperature by an ion-beam depth profiling technique, forward recoil spectrometry. The results confirm that main chain LC polymer chain dynamics are dramatically affected by phase transitions and sample geometry. This behaviour is in marked contrast to the side chain LC polymer which exhibited no phase dependence on the part of the tracer diffusion coefficient. 相似文献

Structural studies performed in this laboratory of organophosphorus pesticides continue with these related compounds. The –NO2 groups of methyl parathion (systematic name: dimethyl 4‐nitrophenyl phosphorothioate, C8H10NO5PS) and dicapthon (systematic name: 2‐chloro‐4‐nitrophenyl dimethyl phosphorothioate, C8H9ClNO5PS) make dihedral angles of 10.67 (8) and 5.8 (1)°, respectively, with the planes of their attached rings, which accompanies angular distortion at the ring C atoms to which the –NO2 groups are attached. Similar distortions are observed at the C atom to which the thiophosphate groups are attached. Significant differences in distances and angles around the phenolic O, versus the –OMe groups, explain why it is the site of hydrolysis for these compounds. A comparison of a torsion angle involving the thiophosphate group and phenolic O atom with similar pesticide structures is given and indicates steric influences on that angle. 相似文献

We report on the adiabatic splitting of a Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb atoms by an asymmetric double-well potential located above the edge of a perpendicularly magnetized TbGdFeCo film atom chip. By controlling the barrier height and double-well asymmetry, the sensitivity of the axial splitting process is investigated through observation of the fractional atom distribution between the left and right wells. This process constitutes a novel sensor for which we infer a single shot sensitivity to gravity fields of deltag/g approximately 2 x 10(-4). From a simple analytic model, we propose improvements to chip-based gravity detectors using this demonstrated methodology. 相似文献

This paper fills a noticeable gap in the current economic and penology literature by proposing new performance-enhancing policies based on an efficiency analysis of a sample of male prisons in England and Wales over the period 2009/10. In addition, we advance the empirical literature by integrating the managerialism of four strategic functions of prisons, employment and accommodation, capacity utilization, quality of life in prison and the rehabilitation and re-offending of prisoners. We find that by estimating multiple models focussing on these different areas some prisons are more efficient than other establishments. In terms of policy, it is therefore necessary to consider not just an overall performance metric for individual prisons, as currently undertaken annually by the UK Ministry of Justice, but to look into the administration and managerialism of their main functions in both a business and public policy perspective. Indeed, it is further necessary to view prisons together and not as single entities, so as to obtain a best practice frontier for the different operations that management undertakes in English and Welsh prisons. 相似文献

In the present study, different MS methods for the determination of human muscle protein fractional synthesis rate (FSR) using [ring‐13C6]phenylalanine as a tracer were evaluated. Because the turnover rate of human skeletal muscle is slow, only minute quantities of the stable isotopically labeled amino acid will be incorporated within the few hours of a typical laboratory experiment. GC combustion isotope ratio MS (GC‐C‐IRMS) has thus far been considered the ‘gold’ standard for the precise measurements of these low enrichment levels. However, advances in liquid chromatography‐tandem MS (LC‐MS/MS) and GC‐tandem MS (GC‐MS/MS) have made these techniques an option for human muscle FSR measurements. Human muscle biopsies were freeze dried, cleaned, and hydrolyzed, and the amino acids derivatized using either N‐acetyl‐n‐propyl, phenylisothiocyanate, or N‐methyl‐N‐(tert‐butyldimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA) for GC‐C‐IRMS, LC‐MS/MS, and GC‐MS/MS analysis, respectively. A second derivative, heptafluorobutyric acid (HFBA), was also used for GC‐MS/MS analysis as an alternative for MTBSTFA. The machine reproducibility or the coefficients of variation for delta tracer‐tracee‐ratio measurements (delta tracer‐tracee‐ratio values around 0.0002) were 2.6%, 4.1%, and 10.9% for GC‐C‐IRMS, LC‐MS/MS, and GC‐MS/MS (MTBSTFA), respectively. FSR determined with LC‐MS/MS compared well with GC‐C‐IRMS and so did the GC‐MS/MS when using the HFBA derivative (linear fit Y = 1.08 ± 0.10, X + 0.0049 ± 0.0061, r = 0.89 ± 0.01, P < 0.0001). In conclusion, (1) IRMS still offers the most precise measurement of human muscle FSR, (2) LC‐MS/MS comes quite close and is a good alternative when tissue quantities are too small for GC‐C‐IRMS, and (3) If GC‐MS/MS is to be used, then the HFBA derivative should be used instead of MTBSTFA, which gave unacceptably high variability. Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and aromatic/aliphatic siloxanes have been made via sequential and simultaneous polymerizations. As the percentage of aliphatic siloxane increases, flexibility and, in general, toughness of the IPNs increases and clarity is reduced. This loss in clarity is due to the mismatch of refractive indices (1.49 form PMMA vs. 1.43 for aliphatic siloxane). PMMA is quite transparent. On the other hand, in making aromatic siloxane/PMMA IPNs clarity is retained as aromatic siloxane is increased due to better matching refractive index (1.49 for PMMA and −1.49 for poly(diphenyl siloxane)). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) indicates slightly crosslinked IPNs with the THF soluble portions having number-average molecular weight, M¯n, of 105–106. NMRs of IPNs essentially show peaks for the components, PMMA and the siloxane, which make up the respective IPNs. 29Si-NMRs indicate cross-linking and grafting. Mechanical properties show increased toughness of IPNs versus PMMA as percentage of siloxane and crosslinker increases, but with a corresponding loss in tensile strength. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

The development of a novel generation of excimer UV lamps enables versatile applications of quasi-monochromatic UV radiation. For example, xenon-excimer flow-through photoreactors may be used for wastewater treatment. The vacuum-UV radiation (λ = 172 nm) initiates water cleavage with formation of H atoms and oxidizing hydroxyl radicals. The latter are responsible for the photomineralization of organic substrates. To study the carboplatin–protein interaction, a sensitive method using size exclusion chromatography coupled to inductively
coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SEC–ICP–MS) was developed. The complexes formed between plasma proteins and carboplatin
were monitored and identified with this method. Composite blood plasma samples from patients who were undergoing chemotherapy
were analyzed, and carboplatin was found to bind plasma proteins. In addition, blank plasma samples were spiked with carboplatin
and were analyzed as a time course study, and the results confirmed that carboplatin formed complexes with plasma proteins,
primarily albumin and γ-globulin. To further substantiate the study, these two proteins were incubated with carboplatin. The
binding between carboplatin and these proteins was then characterized qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition to a one-to-one
binding of Pt to protein, protein aggregation was observed. The kinetics of the binding process of carboplatin to albumin
and γ-globulin was also studied. The initial reaction rate constant of carboplatin binding to albumin was determined to be
0.74 M−1 min−1, while that for γ-globulin was 1.01 M−1 min−1, which are both lower than the rate constant of the cisplatin–albumin reaction previously reported. 相似文献

We report the first observation of a giant magnetoresistance (MR) in Co/Cu superlattices grown by MBE. The maximum value of the MR is - 26% and this is found in a specimen for which the copper layers are about 7 Å thick and which includes a thin 10 Å layer of gold in the buffer region between the substrate and the superlattice. From RHEED and X-ray diffraction it is shown that the metallic layers in the specimens grown in this way are extremely flat and that the orientation of the copper is (111). 相似文献
