Measurement of the total active 8B solar neutrino flux at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory with enhanced neutral current sensitivity

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory has precisely determined the total active (nu(x)) 8B solar neutrino flux without assumptions about the energy dependence of the nu(e) survival probability. The measurements were made with dissolved NaCl in heavy water to enhance the sensitivity and signature for neutral-current interactions. The flux is found to be 5.21 +/- 0.27(stat)+/-0.38(syst) x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), in agreement with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of these and other solar and reactor neutrino results yields Deltam(2)=7.1(+1.2)(-0.6) x 10(-5) eV(2) and theta=32.5(+2.4)(-2.3) degrees. Maximal mixing is rejected at the equivalent of 5.4 standard deviations.     

On the role of organic adlayers in the anomalous water sorptivity of Lépine limestone

Sorptivity data are reported for the capillary absorption of water, ethanol, propan-2-ol, and n-heptane by the calcitic limestone Lépine (Lavoux à grain). The data confirm that the water sorptivity is anomalously low, an indication of partial wetting by water. Results are expressed in terms of a wetting index. The water sorptivity increases after heat treatment and chemical oxidation by hydrogen peroxide bleaching, while the sorptivity with organic liquids is unchanged. These treatments, therefore, increase the water wetting index. The results provide strong evidence that the presence of a natural organic adlayer is responsible for the anomalously low water sorptivity of this particular limestone. This natural water repellency effect may be exploited in developing chemical treatments to modify the water transport properties of stone.     

Spontaneous macroscopic spin polarization in independent spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We present experimental evidence for the spontaneous formation of a macroscopic spin polarization in overlapping regions of two independent Bose-Einstein condensates produced in different hyperfine states of 87Rb. The condensates are independent in the sense that we do not explicitly introduce a relative phase between them. A single "spin-tip" pulse maps the transverse spin polarization into longitudinal spin polarization, and the atomic density distributions are measured with a Stern-Gerlach imaging method. The resulting matter-wave interference patterns are anticorrelated.     

Lewis acids catalyze the addition of allylboronates to aldehydes by electrophilic activation of the dioxaborolane in a closed transition structure

This study addressed the mechanism of the recently reported Lewis acid-catalyzed manifold for additions of allylboronates to aldehydes. A series of control experiments using various reagents and conditions, and kinetic studies by low-temperature NMR spectroscopy, were performed to investigate the origin of the activation provided by the best catalyst, Sc(OTf)3. The results obtained are strongly supportive of a mechanism involving electrophilic boron activation by coordination of the metal ion to one of the boronate oxygens in a closed bimolecular transition state.     

Complete two-electron spectra in double photoionization: the rare gases Ar,Kr, and Xe

A new spectroscopic technique, giving complete two-dimensional e(-)-e(-) coincidence spectra in single photon double photoionization, is presented. The technique resolves the states of doubly charged ions and provides spectra of the individual electrons emitted in formation of each final dication state. Complete spectra for double photoionization of Xe, Kr, and Ar at photon energies up to 51 eV have been recorded. Overall and surprisingly, the np(4) 3P, 1D, and 1S states are populated according to their statistical weights. When the evident autoionization is excluded, the supposedly favored 3P states are in fact disfavored. Detailed information on the autoionization processes is also made available.     

Microscopic theory of network glasses

A theory of the glass transition of network liquids is developed using self-consistent phonon and liquid state approaches. The dynamical transition and entropy crisis characteristic of random first-order transitions are mapped as a function of the degree of bonding and density. Using a scaling relation for a soft-core model to crudely translate the densities into temperatures, theory predicts that the ratio of the dynamical transition temperature to the laboratory transition temperature rises as the degree of bonding increases, while the Kauzmann temperature falls explaining why highly coordinated liquids are "strong" while van der Waals liquids without coordination are "fragile."
