π-Extended Donor–Acceptor Porphyrins and Metalloporphyrins for Antimicrobial Photodynamic Inactivation

Free base, zinc and palladium π-extended porphyrins containing fused naphthalenediamide units were employed as photosensitizers in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). Their efficacy, assessed by photophysical and in vitro photobiological studies on Gram-positive bacteria, was found to depend on metal coordination, showing a dramatic enhancement of photosensitizing activity for the palladium complex.     

Thermal and spectroscopic studies of 2,3,5-trisubstituted and 1,2,3,5-tetrasubstituted indoles as non-competitive antagonists of GluK1/GluK2 receptors

This paper reports the thermal stability and thermal degradation of six derivatives of indole by means of TG-DSC (in air) and TG-FTIR (in nitrogen) techniques. The compounds were also characterized by infrared spectroscopy. In addition, IR spectra were calculated and compared with the experimental data. In particular, the potential energy distribution analysis was performed to assign IR signals. The studied compounds are characterized by good thermal stability in oxidizing and inert atmospheres which is important for potential medical application. Thermogravimetric measurements in air atmosphere showed that the decomposition of compounds proceeds in two or three main stages. The thermal degradation of compounds is preceded by the melting process. The pyrolysis of samples is a one-step process. Together with the analyses performed in nitrogen, the FTIR spectra of the evolved gas phase products were recorded. On the FTIR spectra of gaseous products, only the bands of water, carbon dioxide and carbon oxide molecules are present. In the case of indole derivatives containing the p-chlorobenzyl substituent in position 1, the bands of anisole, p-chlorotoluene and chlorobenzene also appear.     

Selective Esterification of Gossypol by Copper Acetate in Acetonitrile-Spectroscopic Studies

Gossypol and its 1: 1 complexes with copper acetate in acetonitrile were studied by FTIR and UV-visible spectroscopy. With the complexation with Cu cation the tautomeric equilibrium of gossypol is completely shifted from the aldehyde-aldehyde to the lactol-lactol tautomer. The acidic character of O₁₁H group in the gossypol-Cu complex led to the selective esterification of the lactol form of gossypol by the acetate group.     

About 1‐triphenylmethyl‐3‐tert‐butylaziridinone and some of its reactions

A high‐yield synthesis of 1‐triphenylmethyl‐3‐tert‐butylaziridinone ( 4 ), its physical and spectral properties, the limits of its thermal stability, and reactions with methanol, benzylamine and sodium methoxide in methanol are described.     

Characteristics of the oxidation process in the oleic acid-propionic acid system by means of dielectric constant measurements

The influence of the hydrogen-bond association on the course of autoxidation of oleic acid in the binary system oleic acid-propionic acid was discussed. The association was characterized with the help of dielectric constant measurements.     

t‐Butyl Hydroperoxide Oxidative Dealkylation of Hydroquinone Ethers to 1,4‐Quinones

Various organoselenium compounds (diselenides, benzisoselenazol‐3(2H)‐ones, and 1,3,2‐thiaselenazolones) are effective catalysts for oxidative dealkylation of hydroquinone ethers with t‐butyl hydroperoxide to 1,4‐quinones. The reactions is most efficient when t‐butyl hydroperoxide in the presence of poly(bis‐1,2‐phenyl) diselenide is used as an oxidizing agent. In this way 1,4‐benzo and 1,4‐naphthoquinones are produced in good to high yields.
