Microscopically structural studies of lithium niobate powders

On the basis of the crystallographic characteristics of lithium niobate (LN) crystals, Law of Bravais and Pauling's third rule (i.e. Polyhedral Sharing Rule) are employed with the aim to find the relationship between the crystal structure and morphological faces of LN powders. In order to validate our analytical results, we have successfully synthesized LN powders and measured the corresponding X-ray powder diffraction. Our results show that the structural analysis is consistent with the experimental data and is helpful and effective for us to control the single-crystal growth and to design superstructures at the specific plane, starting from the viewpoint of the microscopic behaviors of constituent chemical bonds and polyhedra in the crystallographic frame.     

Wavelet and harmonic filtering for distortion-invariant volume holographic correlation

The wavelet and harmonic filtering method suggested by Zalevsky and Ouzieli is introduced in this paper and adopted in our volume holographic image recognition system. This composite filter combines several scaled versions of the cascaded wavelet and harmonic filter, obtaining high discrimination ability and wide dynamic range of rotation and scale deformations. Optical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the validity and practicability of the algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of using this algorithm in a volume holographic system. Moreover, the separate correlation approach proposed in this paper greatly simplifies the manufacturing process and reduces the cost of the system.

Least‐squares finite element method on adaptive grid for PDEs with shocks

We apply the least‐squares finite element method with adaptive grid to nonlinear time‐dependent PDEs with shocks. The least‐squares finite element method is also used in applying the deformation method to generate the adaptive moving grids. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by solving a Burgers' equation with shocks. Computational results on uniform grids and adaptive grids are compared for the purpose of evaluation. The results show that the adaptive grids can capture the shock more sharply with significantly less computational time. Synthesis of TiO2–SiO2/polymer core–shell microspheres with a microphase‐inversion method

A novel microphase‐inversion method was proposed for the preparation of TiO₂–SiO₂/poly(methyl methacrylate) core–shell nanocomposite particles. The inorganic–polymer nanocomposites were first synthesized via a free‐radical copolymerization in a tetrahydrofuran solution, and the poor solvent was added slowly to induce the microphase separation of the nanocomposite and result in the formation of nanoparticles. The average particle sizes of the microspheres ranged from 70 to 1000 nm, depending on the reaction conditions. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated a core–shell morphology for the obtained microspheres. Thermogravimetric analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements confirmed that the surface of the nanocomposite microspheres was polymer‐rich, and this was consistent with the core–shell morphology. The influence of the synthetic conditions, such as the inorganic composition and the content of the crosslinking monomer, on the particle properties was studied in detail. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Weak and Strong Solutions for the Stokes Approximation of Non-homogeneous Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations

In this paper,the Dirichlet problem of Stokes approximate of non-homogeneous incompressibleNavier-Stokes equations is studied.It is shown that there exist global weak solutions as well as global andunique strong solution for this problem,under the assumption that initial density ρ_0(x)is bounded away from0 and other appropriate assumptions(see Theorem 1 and Theorem 2).The semi-Galerkin method is applied toconstruct the approximate solutions and a prior estimates are made to elaborate upon the compactness of theapproximate solutions.
