Investigation of charge effects on poling and stability for corona-poled polymer films

The optimal corona-poling temperature of polymer films was accurately determined by measuring the temperature dependence of the in situ second-harmonic (SH) intensity profile under the applied poling electric field. The in situ SH intensity profile was first measured by probing both the surface voltages and the poling currents induced by surface/space charges for the corona-poled polymer films. Moreover, charge effects on the stability of the chromophore orientation were first studied by using the thermally stimulated discharge-current technique. Cluster and periodic DFT calculations of adsorption and activation of CO2 on the Cu(hkl) surfaces

The adsorption behavior and thermal activation of carbon dioxide on the Cu(1 1 1), Cu(1 0 0), and Cu(1 1 0) surfaces have been investigated by means of density functional theory calculations and cluster models and periodic slabs. According to the cluster models, the optimized results indicate that the basis set of C and O atoms has a distinct effect on the adsorption energy, but an indistinct one on the equilibrium geometry. For the CO₂/Cu(hkl) adsorption systems studied here, the final structure of adsorbed CO₂ is near linear and the preferred modes for the adsorption of CO₂ onto the Cu(1 1 1), Cu(1 0 0), and Cu(1 1 0) surfaces are the side-on adsorption at the cross bridge site with an adsorption energy of 13.06 kJ/mol, the side-on adsorption at the short bridge site (13.54 kJ/mol), and the end-on adsorption on the on-top site with C–O bonds located along the short bridge site (26.01 kJ/mol), respectively. However, the calculated adsorption energies from periodic slabs are lower as compared to the experimental data as well as the cluster model data, indicating that the periodic slab approach of generalized gradient approximation in the density function theory may be not suitable to obtain quantitative information on the interaction of CO₂ with Cu(hkl) surfaces.

Synthesis and evaluation of a C8 stationary phase on a silica hydride surface by hydrosilation of 1-octyne

The silanization/hydrosilation method is used to bond an alkyne (1-octyne) to a silica hydride surface. The new bonded material is characterized by elemental analysis and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The hydrophobic behavior of this material was determined by the retention characteristics of aromatic solutes and the shape selectivity as well as phase classification (monomeric or polymeric) was measured by the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon mixture standard reference material 869. The presence of residual silanols on the bonded phase was probed by several basic solutes at pH 7. Long-term stability studies were conducted by measuring retention and peak symmetry of basic compounds over several thousand column volumes at pH 10.     

Novel silver(I)-organic coordination polymers: conversion of extended structures in the solid state as driven by argentophilic interactions

Structurally distinct coordination polymers [Ag(bpp)]ClO4 1 and [Ag(bpp)]PF6 2 [bpp = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane] have been assembled; the conversion of 1 into 2 on treatment with NaPF6 is driven by argentophilic interactions and is the first such transformation reported for silver(I)-organic coordination polymers.
