Phase equilibria and salting-out effects in a cesium nitrate-triethylamine-water system at 5–25°C

Phase equilibria and critical phenomena in a cesium nitrate-water-triethylamine system in which the constituent binary liquid system is stratified at the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is studied in a range of 5–25°C by the visual polythermal method. It is found that introducing cesium nitrate into the water-triethylamine system leads to a slight reduction in the LCST (from 18.3 to 16.3°C) and to a decrease in the mutual solubility of the components. The distribution coefficients of triethylamine between aqueous and the organic phases of the monotectic state at different temperatures are calculated. It is found that the salting-out of triethylamine from aqueous solutions by cesium nitrate increases with rising temperature. The results of the salting-out effect of sodium, potassium, and cesium nitrates on a water-triethylamine binary system are compared.

Cluster fusion-fission dynamics in the Singapore stock exchange

In this paper, we investigate how the cross-correlations between stocks in the Singapore stock exchange (SGX) evolve over 2008 and 2009 within overlapping one-month time windows. In particular, we examine how these cross-correlations change before, during, and after the Sep–Oct 2008 Lehman Brothers Crisis. To do this, we extend the complete-linkage hierarchical clustering algorithm, to obtain robust clusters of stocks with stronger intracluster correlations, and weaker intercluster correlations. After we identify the robust clusters in all time windows, we visualize how these change in the form of a fusion-fission diagram. Such a diagram depicts graphically how the cluster sizes evolve, the exchange of stocks between clusters, as well as how strongly the clusters mix. From the fusion-fission diagram, we see a giant cluster growing and disintegrating in the SGX, up till the Lehman Brothers Crisis in September 2008 and the market crashes of October 2008. After the Lehman Brothers Crisis, clusters in the SGX remain small for few months before giant clusters emerge once again. In the aftermath of the crisis, we also find strong mixing of component stocks between clusters. As a result, the correlation between initially strongly-correlated pairs of stocks decay exponentially with average life time of about a month. These observations impact strongly how portfolios and trading strategies should be formulated.     

Influence of ion-exchange and impregnation modification of zeolite X on its catalytic properties in the alkylation of toluene with methanol

The dependence of the activity and selectivity of ion-exchanged forms of zeolite X with incorporated cesium process in alkylation of toluene with methanol in the side chain on the nature of the ion-exchanged cations (Na⁺, Cs⁺, Mg²⁺, Zn²⁺) has been established. It is shown that introduction of Mg²⁺ and Zn²⁺ in combination with Cs₂CO₃ significantly increased the yields of ethylbenzene and styrene in comparison with their yields on alkali forms of zeolite X. __________ Translated from Teoreticheskaya i éksperimental’naya Khimiya, Vol. 42, No. 1, pp. 33–38, January–February, 2006.     

Facile-chelating amine-assisted synthesis of β-In<Subscript>2</Subscript>S<Subscript>3</Subscript> nanostructures from a new single-source precursor derived from <Emphasis Type="Italic">S</Emphasis>-methyl dithiocarbazate

Flake-built 3D β-In₂S₃ nanostructures were synthesized by thermolysis of S-methyl dithiocarbazate–indium(III) complex precursor in hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). XRD patterns showed that the cubic phase of 3D β-In₂S₃ remained unchanged but the crystallinity was increased after annealing at 400 °C for 20 min. The products were also characterized by SEM, TEM, and EDS. Based on the experimental results, we propose that the growth of 3D nanostructures is controlled by the stability of the intermediate chelate complex made by indium(III) and solvent. The optical properties of the 3D β-In₂S₃ nanostructures were also investigated by UV–Vis and PL spectroscopy, which indicated strong quantum confinement effect.
