Clinical spinal cord injury in domestic dogs provides a model population in which to test the efficacy of putative therapeutic interventions for human spinal cord injury. Longevity risk threatens the financial stability of private and government sponsored defined benefit pension systems as well as social security schemes, in an environment already characterized by persistent low interest rates and heightened financial uncertainty. The mortality experience of countries in the industrialized world would suggest a substantial age-time interaction, with the two dominant trends affecting different age groups at different times. From a statistical point of view, this indicates a dependence structure. It is observed that mortality improvements are similar for individuals of contiguous ages (Wills and Sherris, Integrating financial and demographic longevity risk models: an Australian model for financial applications, Discussion Paper PI-0817, 2008). Moreover, considering the dataset by single ages, the correlations between the residuals for adjacent age groups tend to be high (as noted in Denton et al., J Population Econ 18:203–227, 2005). This suggests that there is value in exploring the dependence structure, also across time, in other words the inter-period correlation. In this research, we focus on the projections of mortality rates, contravening the most commonly encountered dependence property which is the “lack of dependence” (Denuit et al., Actuarial theory for dependent risks: measures. Orders and models, Wiley, New York, 2005). By taking into account the presence of dependence across age and time which leads to systematic over-estimation or under-estimation of uncertainty in the estimates (Liu and Braun, J Probability Stat, 813583:15, 2010), the paper analyzes a tailor-made bootstrap methodology for capturing the spatial dependence in deriving confidence intervals for mortality projection rates. We propose a method which leads to a prudent measure of longevity risk, avoiding the structural incompleteness of the ordinary simulation bootstrap methodology which involves the assumption of independence.  相似文献

One popular approach to cloaking objects from electromagnetic waves at moderately long wavelengths is the scattering cancelation technique. This mechanism is based on the use of a single homogeneous thin layer to cover an object of interest in order to provide scattering suppression in a given frequency band. This approach has also been recently extended to acoustic waves. This paper provides an investigation of the physical nature of scattering cancelation by a uniform thin layer for both electromagnetic and acoustic waves in inviscid fluids. Two distinct scattering cancelation regions are obtained within the available parameter space: a non-resonant plasmonic cloaking region and an anti-resonant cloaking region, which are identified and compared in both the electromagnetic and acoustic domains. Although both types of operations allow for the suppression of the dominant scattering orders, the resulting internal fields and physical functionality of the cloaks present distinct differences between the two domains. We discuss analogies and differences between these functionalities and their implications in electromagnetic and acoustic cloaking problems, with an insight into their practical implementation.  相似文献

It is known that weak interactions of two solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations exhibit fractal dependence on initial conditions, and the dynamics of these interactions is governed by a universal two-degree-of-freedom ODE system [Y. Zhu J. Yang, Universal fractal structures in the weak interaction of solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations, Phys. Rev. E 75 (2007) 036605]. In this paper, this ODE system is analyzed comprehensively. Using asymptotic methods along separatrix orbits, a simple second-order map is derived. This map does not have any free parameters after variable rescalings, and thus is universal for all weak interactions of solitary waves in generalized NLS equations. Comparison between this map’s predictions and direct simulations of the ODE system shows that the map can capture the fractal-scattering phenomenon of the ODE system very well both qualitatively and quantitatively.  相似文献

Background

Recent studies have shown that the human right-hemispheric auditory cortex is particularly sensitive to reduction in sound quality, with an increase in distortion resulting in an amplification of the auditory N1m response measured in the magnetoencephalography (MEG). Here, we examined whether this sensitivity is specific to the processing of acoustic properties of speech or whether it can be observed also in the processing of sounds with a simple spectral structure. We degraded speech stimuli (vowel /a/), complex non-speech stimuli (a composite of five sinusoidals), and sinusoidal tones by decreasing the amplitude resolution of the signal waveform. The amplitude resolution was impoverished by reducing the number of bits to represent the signal samples. Auditory evoked magnetic fields (AEFs) were measured in the left and right hemisphere of sixteen healthy subjects.

Results

We found that the AEF amplitudes increased significantly with stimulus distortion for all stimulus types, which indicates that the right-hemispheric N1m sensitivity is not related exclusively to degradation of acoustic properties of speech. In addition, the P1m and P2m responses were amplified with increasing distortion similarly in both hemispheres. The AEF latencies were not systematically affected by the distortion.

Conclusions

We propose that the increased activity of AEFs reflects cortical processing of acoustic properties common to both speech and non-speech stimuli. More specifically, the enhancement is most likely caused by spectral changes brought about by the decrease of amplitude resolution, in particular the introduction of periodic, signal-dependent distortion to the original sound. Converging evidence suggests that the observed AEF amplification could reflect cortical sensitivity to periodic sounds.  相似文献
