The results of buckling tests on uniformly heated, clamped, thin circular cylindrical shells are presented and discussed. Particular attention is paid to both the actual buckling process and the ensuing post-buckling behavior. Load vs. end-shortening curves are included. The possibility of “snap-through” buckling which occurs at a value of end shortening greater than that corresponding to the maximum supported load is experimentally verified. A comparison of the present experimental results with available theory is made. It is observed that the experimental values of the buckling temperature can be substantially greater than the temperatures calculated by linear theory from the experimental buckling loads; however, the buckling stresses are the same whether the loading is thermal or mechanical.  相似文献

Summary Birefringence and orientation angle of solutions of Polyox WSR 301 in the concentration range of 50 to 1350 ppm have been measured up to 8000 s–1. A few marked differences with ordinary flexible polymers have been evidenced: (i) a very low value of the extinction angle at high shear rate, which could be attributed to an unusually high molecular weight; (ii) the independence of this angle on the concentration, which is due to the variation of the flexibility with the concentration, as shown by the study of the concentration dependence of the segmental optical anisotropy; (iii) the concentration dependence of the elongation shows a plateau value forc 150 ppm, which may come from a concentration dependent and reversible association process, as shown from reduced viscosity measurements.
Zusammenfassung Es wurden die Doppelbrechung und der Orientierungswinkel von Polyox-WSR 301-Lösungen im Konzentrationsbereich 50–1350 ppm bis zu Schergeschwindigkeiten von 8000 s–1 gemessen. Dabei wurden einige ausgeprägte Unterschiede gegenüber normalen flexiblen Polymeren gefunden: (i) ein sehr niedriger Wert des Auslöschwinkels, was auf ein ungewöhnlich hohes Molekulargewicht schließen läßt: (ii) die Unabhängigkeit dieses Winkels von der Konzentration, was von einer Änderung der Flexibilität mit der Konzentration herrührt, wie sie durch die Untersuchung der Konzentrationsabhängigkeit der optischen Anisotropie der Segmente aufgezeigt wird; (iii) die Existenz eines Plateaus in der Konzentrationsabhängigkeit der Streckung beic 150 ppm, welches auf einen konzentrationsabhängigen reversiblen Assoziationsvorgang hindeutet, der auch durch Messung der reduzierten Viskosität nahegelegt wird.

Summary The viscosity and the recoverable strain in the steady state of elongation have been measured on several polyethylenes of different molecular structures. The elongational viscosity as a function of tensile stress runs through a more or less pronounced maximum in the nonlinear range whereas in the linear range the Trouton viscosity is reached. For low density polyethylenes it could be demonstrated that the maximum of the steady-state elongational viscosity and the elasticity expressed by the steady-state compliances in shear and tension sensitively increase if the molecular weight distribution is broadened by the addition of high molecular weight components. A variation of the weight average molecular weight does only shift the elongational viscosity curve but leaves its shape unchanged. Two of the four high density polyethylenes investigated do not show a maximum of the steady-state elongational viscosity, for the others it is less pronounced than in the case of low density polyethylenes. The influence of branching on the elongational behaviour of polyethylene melts in the steady-state and the transient region is qualitatively discussed.With 11 figures and 4 tables  相似文献

Summary Measurements have been made of the gas amplification factor of a cylindrical counter filled with neon-bromine and argon-bromine-mixtures. Information has been obtained as to the mechanism of gas multiplication when the gas amplification is less than 100. The transit time of electrons across a tube of average dimensions operated in the proportional region was found to be less then 0.2 microseconds. The duration and the mechanism of the discharge build-up was found to change with the amount of bromine present in the counter.This work was performed at the Physics Department, Southampton University England.  相似文献

The water adsorption capacity of a dough consisting of wheat flour was increased linearly by the addition of water-insoluble hemicelluloses (xylane, mannane etc.) extracted from beech-wood pulp using soda lye (a by-product of viscose fiber production). The investigation of this finding by viscosity measurements revealed two reasons for the higher water uptake: 1) a higher kneading resistance of the dough, and 2) a gel-regeneration of the kneaded dough during the dough-rest.

Nonlinear response of a parametrically excited buckled beam   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
A nonlinear analysis of the response of a simply-supported buckled beam to a harmonic axial load is presented. The method of multiple scales is used to determine to second order the amplitude- and phase-modulation equations. Floquet theory is used to analyze the stability of periodic responses. The perturbation results are verified by integrating the governing equation using both digital and analog computers. For small excitation amplitudes, the analytical results are in good agreement with the numerical solutions. The large-amplitude responses are investigated by using a digital computer and are compared with those obtained via an analog-computer simulation. The complicated dynamic behaviors that were found include period-multiplying and period-demultiplying bifurcations, period-three and period-six motions, jump phenomena, and chaos. In some cases, multiple periodic attractors coexist, and a chaotic attractor coexists with a periodic attractor. Phase portraits, spectra of the responses, and a bifurcation set of the many solutions are presented.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Unter der Voraussetzung linear von der Temperatur abhängiger Zähigkeit wurde das Temperaturfeld zwischen zwei koaxialen rotierenden Zylindern für eine laminare stationäre Strömung analytisch ermittelt und für den FallNewtonsche Flüssigkeiten ein Ausdruck für das Verhältnis von Schergeschwindigkeit und Winkelgeschwindigkeit angegeben. Die experimentellen Untersuchungen an Steinkohlenteer liefern eine gute Übereinstimmung mit den theoretischen Ergebnissen und zeigen, daß die verwendete SubstanzNewtonsches Verhalten zeigt.  相似文献

Summary In this paper we propose a method for measurements with and calibration of the Weissenberg Rheogoniometer by means of a small computer.For Newtonian fluids we found that the dynamic viscosity is changed by a superposition of a steady shear flow on an oscillatory one, dependent on the direction of the steady shear flow.
Zusammenfassung In diesem Aufsatz wird eine neue Methode zur Eichung eines Weissenberg-Rheogoniometers und für das Messen mit diesem Apparat dargestellt. Wir haben an newtonschen Flüssigkeiten beobachtet, daß die dynamische Viskosität bei der Überlagerung einer stationären und einer oszillierenden Scherströmung je nach der Richtung der stationären Strömung ihren Wert ändert.

This work introduces a modified Principal Dynamic Modes (PDM) methodology using eigenvalue/eigenvector analysis to separate individual components of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous contributions to heart rate variability. We have modified the PDM technique to be used with even a single output signal of heart rate variability data, whereas the original PDMs required both input and output data. This method specifically accounts for the inherent nonlinear dynamics of heart rate control, which the current method of power spectrum density (PSD) is unable to do. Propranolol and atropine were administered to normal human volunteers intravenously to inhibit the sympathetic and parasympathetic activities, respectively. With separate applications of the respective drugs, we found a significant decrease in the amplitude of the waveforms that correspond to each nervous activity. Furthermore, we observed near complete elimination of these dynamics when both drugs were given to the subjects. Comparison of our method to the conventional low/high frequency ratio of PSD shows that PDM methodology provides much more accurate assessment of the autonomic nervous balance by separation of individual components of the autonomic nervous activities. The PDM methodology is expected to have an added benefit that diagnosis and prognostication of a patient's health can be determined simply via a non-invasive electrocardiogram.  相似文献

The velocity field in the central sagittal plane of an idealized representation of the human oropharynx (HOP) during steady inspiration, simulating oral inhalation through an inhaler mouthpiece, was measured experimentally using endoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV). Measurements were made at three flow rates: 15, 30, and 90 L/min, which correspond to a wide range of physiological conditions. Extensive tests were performed to verify the veracity of the PIV data. The flow was also modeled computationally using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. The PIV data clearly indicate the complex nature of HOP flow, with three-dimensionality and several regions of separation and recirculation evident. Comparison of the experimental and computational results shows that, although the RANS CFD reproduces the basic features of the flow, it does not adequately capture the increased viscous effects at lower Reynolds numbers. The results demonstrate the need for more development and validation of CFD modeling, in particular RANS methods, in these flows.  相似文献
