Measurement of the fraction of reabsorbed light in an Er<Superscript>3+</Superscript>-doped glass

We report on an original continuous holographic grating technique to quantify the excitation transport within the excited states of erbium ions. We measure a very long range effect well beyond the μm distance which is attributed to radiation trapping. We demonstrate that 30% of the emitted light is reabsorbed inside the sample due to total internal reflections (TIR). The effect of reabsorption is totally removed when TIR are reduced by refractive index matching of the surroundings of the sample. PACS 78.20.-e     

Theoretical and experimental investigation of the basicity of phosphino(silyl)carbenes

[reaction: see text] The reactivity of phosphino(trimethylsilyl)carbenes 1 with several organic acids has been examined in order to evaluate the pKa values of the conjugate acids. Carbenes 1 react efficiently with C-organic acids such as 1,3-dimesitylimidazolium chloride, phenylacetylene, acetonitrile, and acetyltrimethylsilane, which have pKa's in DMSO in the range 18-31. However, the reaction of the conjugate acids 1H+ with the anion perturbs the determination of the genuine basicity of 1. Theoretical calculations have been performed in order to quantify the basicity of phosphino(trimethylsilyl)carbenes 1 and to compare them with that of N-heterocyclic carbenes 2. The pKa of 1H+ in DMSO has been computed to be in the 23.0-23.4 range, so that 1 is not strong enough as a base to spontaneously deprotonate organic acids such as phenylacetylene, acetonitrile, or acetyltrimethylsilane. However, its conjugate acid 1H+ is a strong electrophile and easily reacts with the nucleophilic conjugate bases of these acids leading to the formation of the corresponding phosphorus ylides.     

Thermal solid state synthesis of coordination complexes from hydrogen bonded precursors

Thermal dehydrochlorination of crystalline 4-picolinium salts of [PtCl4]2- and [PdCl4]2- leads to formation of trans-[MCl2(4-picoline)2](M = Pt, Pd).     

High-energy in-fiber pulse amplification for coherent lidar applications

An Er:Yb codoped fiber amplifier chain for the generation of pulses for coherent lidar applications at a wavelength near 1.5 microm is reported. The final 1.8-m-long power amplification stage had a 50-microm core diameter and yielded a 23-dB energy gain, resulting in 0.29-mJ, 100-ns pulses at a repetition rate of 4 kHz with no Brillouin scattering and an M2 of 2.1.     

Asymptotic characteristics of parabolic similariton pulses in optical fiber amplifiers

The fundamental asymptotic nature of parabolic similariton pulses in normal-dispersion fiber amplifiers is experimentally demonstrated. With frequency-resolved optical gating characterization measurements with a fixed input pulse energy, the output parabolic pulse characteristics are shown to be invariant with the input pulse profile and duration and to be completely determined only by the amplifier parameters.     

High-sensitivity time-resolved intracavity laser Fourier transform spectroscopy with vertical-cavity surface-emitting multiple-quantum-well lasers

Spectra composed of hundreds of time components for absorption path lengths of up to 130 km have been recorded near 1050 nm by combination of two recent techniques, intracavity laser spectroscopy with vertical external cavity surface-emitting multiple-quantum-well lasers and time-resolved Fourier transform spectroscopy. A sensitivity of 1 x 10(-10) cm(-1) Hz(-1/2) is achieved for 10(4) simultaneously acquired spectral elements, 3 orders of magnitude better than the sensitivity obtained in previous similar experiments. Specific advantages of the method, especially for frequency and intensity metrology of weak absorption transitions, are discussed.     

Improved image contrast with mangafodipir trisodium (MnDPDP) during MR-guided percutaneous cryosurgery of the liver

The present study was undertaken to measure the gain observed in the liver-to-tumor contrast of perioperative images when using mangafodipir trisodium, a liver-specific contrast agent, during percutaneous cryosurgery of the liver performed under the guidance of magnetic resonance images. Retrospective quantitative analyses of MR images were performed on eleven patients having a total of 30 liver tumors treated by MR-guided percutaneous cryosurgery. An initial group of four patients were treated with no contrast agent, and was compared with a second group of 7 patients who received an intravenous injection of 5 microM/kg of mangafodipir for their cryosurgery. The percutaneous cryosurgery was monitored under the near-real-time-imaging mode of a 0.5T open-configuration MRI system using a T(1)-weighted Gradient-recalled echo pulse sequence. A significant improvement in the liver-to-tumor contrast-to-noise ratio was observed with mangafodipir (p < 0.05, paired t test) in 0.5T preoperative images. Along with the stability of the mangafodipir contrast enhancement during the entire cryosurgical procedure, the resulting gain in contrast allowed for better visualizing the presence of residual untreated tumor margins at the periphery of the cryosurgery iceball directly from perioperative images acquired with patients under narcosis. Consequently, it not only became easier for the interventionalist to determine the need for an additional cryoprobe to increase the size of the iceball during the procedure, but also to decide on the appropriate end point of the cryosurgery.     

Stable planar six-pi-electron six-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with tunable electronic properties

Carbene analogues of borazines are highly thermally stable. Keeping quasi-identical steric demands, the electronic properties of the carbene can be precisely tuned by varying the nature of the substituents at the boron centers.     

Pd(II)-catalyzed intermolecular 1,2-diamination of conjugated dienes

A Pd(II) chloride precatalyst, in the presence of 1 equiv of benzoquinone, effects highly efficient, regioselective 1,2-diamination of 1,3-dienes using dialkyl ureas under mild conditions. There is no requirement for a large excess of diene.     

Apparent thermalization due to plasma instabilities in the quark-gluon plasma

Hydrodynamical modeling of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC suggests that the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) "thermalizes" in a remarkably short time scale, about 0.6 fm/c. We argue that this should be viewed as indicating fast isotropization, but not necessarily complete thermalization, of the nonequilibrium QGP. Non-Abelian plasma instabilities can drive local isotropization of an anisotropic QGP on a time scale which is faster than ordinary perturbative scattering processes. As a result, we argue that theoretical expectations based on weak-coupling analysis are not necessarily in conflict with hydrodynamic modeling of the early part of RHIC collisions, provided one recognizes the key role of non-Abelian plasma instabilities.
