We present here a study of the acoustic dynamics of polymeric glassy sulfur. The data have been collected in the GHz frequency range by means of Brillouin light scattering for different scattering geometries. The choice of the experimental setup allows us to obtain information on the refractive index, n, that comes out to be close to that corresponding to the high temperature polymeric liquid phase. The longitudinal acoustic excitations have been investigated as a function of temperature from deep into the glassy state up to the glass transition temperature. The temperature dependence of the sound velocity is compared to the one measured in the liquid phase. We find that the sound velocity of the glass can be linearly extrapolated from that of the polymeric liquid measured in the THz frequency range with inelastic X-ray scattering.  相似文献

We present an investigation of the dynamic structure factor and of the dielectric function epsilonM(Q,omega) of the prototypical semiconductor silicon for finite momentum transfer, combining inelastic x-ray scattering experiments and ab initio calculations. In contrast with optical spectra, for finite momentum transfer time-dependent density-functional theory in the adiabatic local-density approximation together with lifetime broadening describes the physics of valence excitations correctly. Major structures in the spectra, governed by short-range crystal and exchange-correlation local-field effects, are strongly influenced by a mixing of transitions of positive and negative energies, in striking difference to spectra for vanishing momentum transfer. This mixing gives rise to a pronounced Fano asymmetry.  相似文献

Three new compounds, a sesquilignans, an oxyneolignan and a norlignan, have been isolated from the aqueous fraction of Cestrum parqui. High frequency sound is observed in lithium diborate glass, Li2O-2B2O3, using Brillouin scattering of light and x rays. The sound attenuation exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the wave vector, with a remarkably rapid increase towards a Ioffe-Regel crossover as the frequency approaches the boson peak from below. An analysis of literature results reveals that the boson-peak frequency is closely related with a Ioffe-Regel limit for sound in many glasses. We conjecture that this relation, specific to glassy materials, might be rather common among them.  相似文献

In this paper we develop numerical fluxes of the centred type for one-step schemes in conservative form for solving general systems of conservation laws in multiple-space dimensions on structured meshes. The proposed method is an extension of the multidimensional FORCE flux developed by Toro et al. (2009) [14]. Here we introduce upwind bias by modifying the shape of the staggered mesh of the original FORCE method. The upwind bias is evaluated using an estimate of the largest eigenvalue, which in any case is needed for selecting a time step. The resulting basic flux is first-order accurate and monotone. For the linear advection equation, the proposed UFORCE method reproduces exactly the upwind Godunov method. Extension to non-linear systems has been done empirically via the two-dimensional inviscid shallow water equations. Second order of accuracy in space and time on structured meshes is obtained in the framework of finite volume methods. The proposed method improves the accuracy of the solution for small Courant numbers and intermediate waves associated with linearly degenerate fields (contact discontinuities, shear waves and material interfaces). It achieves comparable accuracy to that of upwind methods with approximate Riemann solvers, though retaining the simplicity and efficiency of centred methods. The performance of the schemes is assessed on a suite of test problems for the two-dimensional shallow water equations.  相似文献

New scaling behavior has been both predicted and observed in the spontaneous production of fluxons in quenched Nb-Al/Al(ox)/Nb annular Josephson tunnel junctions (JTJs) as a function of the quench time, tau(Q). The probability f(1) to trap a single defect during the normal-metal-superconductor phase transition clearly follows an allometric dependence on tau(Q) with a scaling exponent sigma = 0.5, as predicted from the Zurek-Kibble mechanism for realistic JTJs formed by strongly coupled superconductors. This definitive experiment replaces one reported by us earlier, in which an idealized model was used that predicted sigma = 0.25, commensurate with the then much poorer data. Our experiment remains the only condensed matter experiment to date to have measured a scaling exponent with any reliability.  相似文献

The study of phonon dispersion curves of materials under hydrostatic pressure provides important information such as the evolution of sound velocities, elastic constants, interatomic potentials, phase transition mechanisms, etc. Until very recently, coherent inelastic neutron scattering was the only spectroscopic technique, which allowed performing these types of studies up to typically 10 GPa. Today, inelastic X-ray scattering with meV energy resolution provides a complementary spectroscopic technique, where, using diamond anvil cell techniques, pressures beyond 100 GPa can be reached.  相似文献
