Gromov-Witten Invariants of Flag Manifolds, VIA D-Modules

We present a method for computing the 3-point genus zero Gromov–Witteninvariants of the complex flag manifold G/B from the relationsof the small quantum cohomology algebra QH^*G/B (G is a complexsemisimple Lie group and B is a Borel subgroup). In [3] and[9], at least in the case G = GL_nC, two algebraic/combinatoricmethods have been proposed, based on suitably designed axioms.Our method is quite different, being differential geometricin nature; it is based on the approach to quantum cohomologydescribed in [7], which is in turn based on the integrable systemspoint of view of Dubrovin and Givental.     

Landau quantization and time dependence in the ionization of cold, strongly magnetized Rydberg atoms

The electric-field-ionization and autoionization behavior of cold Rydberg atoms of 85Rb in magnetic fields up to 6 T is investigated. Multiple ionization potentials and field-ionization bands reflecting the Landau energy quantization of the quasifree Rydberg electron are observed. The time-resolved and state-selective field-ionization study provides evidence of mixing and spin flips of the Rydberg electron. Spin-orbit coupling combined with mixing gives rise to a Feshbach-type autoionization of metastable positive-energy atoms.     

Iron(III) species formed during iron(II) oxidation and iron-core formation in the bacterioferritin of Escherichia coli

Summary This paper describes a preliminary investigation of the mechanisms of Fe(II) oxidation and storage of Fe(III) in the bacterioferritin ofEscherichia coli (EcBFR). Using M?ssbauer spectroscopy to examine the initial oxidation of iron by EcBFR we have confirmed that this ferritin exhibits ?ferroxidase? activity and have shown that dimeric and monomeric iron species are produced as intermediates. We compare the characteristics of ferroxidase activity in EcBFR with those of human H-chain ferritin (HuHF) and discuss the different M?ssbauer parameters of their dimeric iron with reference to the structures of their di-metal sites. In addition, we present preliminary findings suggesting that after an initial ?burst?, the rate of oxidation is greatly reduced, possibly due to blockage of the ferroxidase centre by bound iron. A new component, not found in HuHF and probably representing a small cluster of Fe(III) atoms, is reported. Paper presented at the ICAME-95, Rimini, 10–16 September 1995.     

Heats of immersion of titanium dioxide pigments in aqueous solutions: Part II. The immersion of dried rutile pigment in solutions of varying solute concentration

The heats of immersion of a partially-dried coated ruffle pigment in water and aqueous solutions of several surfactants were measured by a differential calorimetric method. The variations in heats of immersion with solute concentration are interpreted in terms of a theoretical model involving the heats of adsorption of water and solute. The heats of immersion were more exothermie in the solutions than in water itself although it is not certain whether the solute is adsorbed on top of a fully adsorbed water complement or whether competitive adsorption between water and the solute occurs.
