Maximum-entropy data analysis

The reconstruction of physical quantities from (computer-) experimental data is very often hampered by the presence of noise, insufficient information and above all by the ill-posed nature of the underlying inversion problem. It will be demonstrated that the maximum entropy concepts is particularly suited for this type of data-analysis problems. It is based on Bayesian statistics and provides a consistent probabilistic theory to obtain unbiased results, independent of any model assumptions. This is particularly desirable if there is no additional information to justify these hypotheses. If, on the other hand, additional prior knowledge is available, it can be effectively incorporated into the computation, leading to more stringent confidence intervals.

Type I and type II sensitizers based on Rose Bengal onium salts

Abstract— New Rose Bengal oniurn salts containing one or two iodonium, sulfonium, phosphonium, and pyrylium ions have been prepared as part of a program to develop sensitizers which can function as Type I radical photoinitiators and Type II energy transfer donors depending on experimental conditions. The absorption spectra of the onium salts in different solvents indicate an equilibrium between tight and loose ion pairs which depends on the solvent polarity, the cation and concentration. Typical Rose Bengal photochemistry requires the structure be that of the loose ion pair in the solvent of choice. Similar factors also influence bleaching behavior, and bleaching is the result of electron transfer processes. The quantum yields of singlet oxygen production from the onium salts in polar solvents are similar to that of the parent, Rose Bengal disodium salt.     

Study of a glassy carbon electrode in amperometric detection using d.c., normal and differential pulse techniques

The results of a comparative study on d.c., normal pulse and differential pulse techniques applied to anodic amperometric detection at a glassy carbon electrode in a voltammetric flow-through cell are presented. The important aspects examined are response time, linearity, limit of detection and selectivity. It is shown that the d.c. mode is the most favourable as long as no adsorption of oxidation products takes place. If strong adsorption occurs, normal pulse detection is recommended, although the limit of detection is somewhat larger.     

Determination of total sulphur in coal by x-ray fluorescence spectrometry

A precise x-ray fluorescence method for the determination of sulphur in coat. The sample is mixed with calcium oxide and active carbon and is gradually heated to 900°C. After coding, lithium tetraborate and lead oxide are added and a prepared. The Pb M_α line is used as an internal standard for the KK_α line. The results for coal have a relative standard deviation of approximately 1% and exhibit.     

Synthesis and reactions of 2-(alkylthio)-4,4-dimenthyl-1,3-thiazole-5(4H)-thiones

Six 2-(alkylthio)-substituted 4,4-dimethyl-1,3-thiazole-5(4H)-thiones were synthesized according to a new method. The reactions of these compounds with allyl- and benzyllithium reagents, 1,3-dipoles, and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate proceeded in a similar manner to 2-alkyl-substituted analogues, while methyllithium reacted in a different way yielding trithio-orthoester derivatives.     

The signal vs. concentration relationships in fluorimetry

Formulae for the fluorescence signal are derived which take into account some factors hitherto neglected. From these formulae conditions are deduced, for which a linear relationship exists between the concentration of the fluorescent components and the intensity of the fluorescence. In some cases of practical interest the fulfilment of these conditions cause too low a sensitivity. For such cases a method of optimization is outlined, by means of which the conditions are found which lead to the least deviation from linearity at the required sensitivity.
