A gelatin matrix was simultaneously doped with nine equimolar, homologous, tetraalkylammonium salts ranging in mass from 210 to 700 Da. Bombardment of the sample with kiloelectronvolt ions resulted in a nonidentical distribution of relative cation intensities with a maximum at m/z 242 for samples with a total salt concentration of 0.004 g of salt/g of gelatin. A rapid increase in relative intensities with increasing mass is observed for the low mass salts and is believed to be linked to changes in the ionization efficiencies. The changes in ionization efficiencies are likely related to decreasing coulombic attractive forces between the organic cation and the counterion. Disappearance cross-sections, determined from decay curves, indicate that sputter-induced damage increases with increasing mass of the cation. Fragment-to-intact cation ratios also suggest that damage accumulates fastest in the heaviest salts. These observations indicate that desorption yields of the organic salts in a gelatin matrix decrease with increasing mass. In addition, suppression of lower mass tetraalkylammonium salt intact cation intensities was observed for salt-in-gelatin concentrations greater than 10−3 g/g.  相似文献

The use of ultrasound as an external stimulus for promoting polymerization reactions has received increasing attention in recent years. In this Review article, the fundamental processes that can lead to either the homolytic cleavage of polymer chains, or the sonolysis of solvent (or other) small molecules, under the application of ultrasound are described. These reactions promote the production of reactive radicals, which can be utilized in chain-growth radical polymerizations under the right conditions. A full historical overview of the development of ultrasound-assisted radical polymerization is provided, with special attention given to the recently described systems that are “controlled” by methods of reversible (radical) deactivation. Perspectives are shared on what challenges still remain in polymer sonochemistry, as well as new areas that are yet to be explored.  相似文献

We discuss repulsive Casimir forces between dielectric materials with nontrivial magnetic susceptibility. It is shown that considerations based on the naive pairwise summation of van der Waals and Casimir-Polder forces may not only give an incorrect estimate of the magnitude of the total Casimir force but even the wrong sign of the force when materials with high dielectric and magnetic responses are involved. Indeed repulsive Casimir forces may be found in a large range of parameters, and we suggest that the effect may be realized in known materials. The phenomenon of repulsive Casimir forces may be of importance both for experimental study and for nanomachinery applications.  相似文献

We describe a new class of experiments designed to probe the foundations of quantum mechanics. Using quantum controlling devices, we show how to attain a freedom in temporal ordering of the control and detection of various phenomena. We consider wave–particle duality in the context of quantum-controlled and the entanglement-assisted delayed-choice experiments. Then we discuss a quantum-controlled CHSH experiment and measurement of photon’s transversal position and momentum in a single set-up.  相似文献

This paper investigates the design and analysis of a novel energy harvesting device that uses magnetic levitation to produce an oscillator with a tunable resonance. The governing equations for the mechanical and electrical domains are derived to show the designed system reduces to the form of a Duffing oscillator under both static and dynamic loads. Thus, nonlinear analyses are required to investigate the energy harvesting potential of this prototypical nonlinear system. Theoretical investigations are followed by a series of experimental tests that validate the response predictions. The motivating hypothesis for the current work was that nonlinear phenomenon could be exploited to improve the effectiveness of energy harvesting devices.  相似文献

Despite an emerging catalogue of collective behaviours in communities of homogeneously distributed cell-like objects, microscale protocell colonies with spatially segregated populations have received minimal attention. Here, we use microfluidics to fabricate Janus-like calcium alginate hydrogel microspheres with spatially partitioned populations of enzyme-containing inorganic colloidosomes and investigate their potential as integrated platforms for domain-mediated chemical communication and programmable protocell-matrix dynamics. Diffusive chemical signalling within the segregated communities gives rise to increased initial enzyme kinetics compared with a homogeneous distribution of protocells. We employ competing enzyme-mediated hydrogel crosslinking and decrosslinking reactions in different domains of the partitioned colonies to undertake selective expulsion of a specific protocell population from the community. Our results offer new possibilities for the design and construction of spatially organized cytomimetic consortia capable of endogenous chemical processing and protocell-environment interactivity.  相似文献

We present a systematic experimental investigation of the reactions between hydrogen plasma and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) at various temperatures. Microscopy, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, and electrical transport measurements are carried out to investigate the properties of SWNTs after hydrogenation. Structural deformations, drastically reduced electrical conductance, and an increased semiconducting nature of SWNTs upon sidewall hydrogenation are observed. These changes are reversible upon thermal annealing at 500 degrees C via dehydrogenation. Harsh plasma or high temperature reactions lead to etching of nanotubes likely via hydrocarbonation. Smaller SWNTs are markedly less stable against hydrocarbonation than larger tubes. The results are fundamental and may have implications to basic and practical applications including hydrogen storage, sensing, band gap engineering for novel electronics, and new methods of manipulation, functionalization, and etching of nanotubes.  相似文献

The formulation of surface thermodynamics for flat surfaces has been done so as to be free of the Gibbs surface construction. The advantage of these formulations is that it allows the choice of thermodynamic field variables that is more general than the traditional construction. However, a generalization to curved surfaces including thin films that exist in emulsion structures has not been published. The Hansen-Cahn construction is developed in a setting that allows curvature terms to be added to the free energy expression. The Laplace equation extended to include bending elasticity and spontaneous bending elasticity is derived by computing functional derivatives of the free energy. Results for both single interfaces and double interfaces are reported. Stability conditions for profile fluctuations are developed to include these additional properties.  相似文献
