Nitrate is a key component of synthetic fertilizers that can be beneficial to crop production in agro-ecosystems, but can also cause damage to natural ecosystems if it is exported in large amounts. Stable isotopes, both oxygen and nitrogen, have been used to trace the sources and fate of nitrate in various ecosystems. However, the oxygen isotope composition of synthetic and organic nitrates is poorly constrained. Here, we present a study on the N and O isotope composition of nitrate-based fertilizers. The δ15N values of synthetic and natural nitrates were 0?±?2?‰ similar to the air N2 from which they are derived. The δ18O values of synthetic nitrates were 23?±?3?‰, similar to air O2, and natural nitrate fertilizer δ18O values (55?±?5?‰) were similar to those observed in atmospheric nitrate. The Δ17O values of synthetic fertilizer nitrate were approximately zero following a mass-dependent isotope relationship, while natural nitrate fertilizers had Δ17O values of 18?±?2?‰ similar to nitrate produced photochemically in the atmosphere. These narrow ranges of values can be used to assess the amount of nitrate arising from fertilizers in mixed systems where more than one nitrate source exists (soil, rivers, and lakes) using simple isotope mixing models.  相似文献

The removal of the native oxides from the In0.53Ga0.47As surface by exposure to atomic hydrogen has been investigated by highly surface sensitive synchrotron radiation based photoelectron spectroscopy. This shows that it is possible to fully remove the arsenic oxides at low temperatures, while still leaving a low concentration of stable Ga2O and In2O at the surface, and no evidence of indium loss from the substrate. The removal of surface carbon contamination is also seen, however full removal is only detected in the absence of prior substrate annealing. (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Bimetallic catalysts have demonstrated properties favorable for upgrading biofuel through catalytic hydrodeoxygenation. However, the design and optimization of such bimetallic catalysts requires the ability to construct accurate, predictive models of these systems. To generate a model that predicts the kinetic behavior of benzene adsorbed on Pt (1 1 1) and a Pt3Sn (1 1 1) surface alloy (Pt3Sn (1 1 1)), the adsorption of benzene was studied for a wide range of benzene coverages on both surfaces using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The adsorption energy of benzene was found to correlate linearly with benzene coverage on Pt (1 1 1) and Pt3Sn (1 1 1); both surfaces exhibited net repulsive lateral interactions. Through an analysis of the d-band properties of the metal surface, it was determined that the coverage dependence is a consequence of the electronic interactions between benzene and the surface. The linear coverage dependence of the adsorption energy allowed us to quantify the influence of the lateral interactions on the heat of adsorption and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) spectra using a mean-field model. A comparison of our simulated TPD to experiment showed that this mean-field model adequately reproduces the desorption behavior of benzene on Pt (1 1 1) and Pt3Sn (1 1 1). In particular, the TPD correctly exhibits a broadening desorption peak as the initial coverage of benzene increases on Pt (1 1 1) and a low temperature desorption peak on Pt3Sn (1 1 1). However, due to the sensitivity of the TPD peak temperature to the desorption energy, precise alignment of experimental and theoretical TPD spectra demands an accurate calculation of the adsorption energy. Therefore, an analysis of the effect of the exchange-correlation functional on TPD modeling is presented. Through this work, we show the necessity of incorporating lateral interactions into theoretical models in order to correctly predict experimental behavior.  相似文献

We develop rapid chemical-vapor sensors based on optofluidic ring resonators (OFRRs). The OFRR is a glass capillary whose circular wall supports the circulating waveguide modes (WGMs). The OFRR inner surface is coated with a vapor-sensitive polymer. The analyte and polymer interaction causes the polymer refractive index to change, which is detected as a WGM spectral shift. Owing to the excellent fluidics, the OFRR exhibits subsecond detection and recovery time with a flow rate of only 1 mL/min, a few orders of magnitude lower than that in the existing optical vapor sensors. The detection limit is estimated to be 5.6 x 10(-6) refractive index units, over ten times better than other ring-resonator vapor sensors. Ethanol and hexane vapors are used as a model system, and chemical differentiation is demonstrated with different polymer coatings.  相似文献

Using recent precision measurements of cosmological parameters, we re-examine whether these observations alone, independent of type Ia supernova surveys, are sufficient to imply the existence of dark energy. We find that best measurements of the age of the Universe t0t0, the Hubble parameter H0H0 and the matter fraction ΩmΩm strongly favor an equation of state defined by (w<−1/3w<1/3). This result is consistent with the existence of a repulsive, acceleration-causing component of energy if the Universe is nearly flat.  相似文献

Reproducible and uncharacteristic tensile stress–strain behavior of cured glassy epoxy‐amine networks produces distinctive fracture surfaces. Test specimens exhibiting plastic flow result in mirror‐like fracture surfaces, whereas samples that fail during yield or strain softening regions possess nominal mirror‐mist‐hackle topography. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy reveal branched nodule morphologies in the 50‐nm size scale that may be responsible for the unusual tensile properties. Current hypothesis is that plastic flow of the glassy thermoset occurs through the existence and deformation of these nodular nanostructures. The thermal cure profile of the epoxy‐amine thermoset affects the size and formation of the nodular nanostructure. Eliminating vitrification during thermoset polymerization forms a more continuous phase, reduction in size of the nodules, and eliminates the capacity of the material to yield in plastic flow. This maximizes nanostructure connectivity of the glassy epoxy‐amine thermoset and reduces strain to failure significantly. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. The use of ultrasound as an external stimulus for promoting polymerization reactions has received increasing attention in recent years. In this Review article, the fundamental processes that can lead to either the homolytic cleavage of polymer chains, or the sonolysis of solvent (or other) small molecules, under the application of ultrasound are described. These reactions promote the production of reactive radicals, which can be utilized in chain-growth radical polymerizations under the right conditions. A full historical overview of the development of ultrasound-assisted radical polymerization is provided, with special attention given to the recently described systems that are “controlled” by methods of reversible (radical) deactivation. Perspectives are shared on what challenges still remain in polymer sonochemistry, as well as new areas that are yet to be explored.  相似文献
