Mixing of electronic states in pentacene adsorption on copper

By combining experimental and theoretical approaches, we study the adsorption of pentacene on copper as a model for the coupling between aromatic molecules and metal surfaces. Our results for the interface electronic structure are not compatible with a purely physisorption picture, which is conventionally employed for such systems. Nay, we demonstrate electronic mixing between molecular orbitals and metal electronic states.     

From a Medicinal Mushroom Blend a Direct Anticancer Effect on Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: A Preclinical Study on Lung Metastases

Bioactive metabolites isolated from medicinal mushrooms (MM) used as supportive treatment in conventional oncology have recently gained interest. Acting as anticancer agents, they interfere with tumor cells and microenvironment (TME), disturbing cancer development/progression. Nonetheless, their action mechanisms still need to be elucidated. Recently, using a 4T1 triple-negative mouse BC model, we demonstrated that supplementation with Micotherapy U-Care, a MM blend, produced a striking reduction of lung metastases density/number, paralleled by decreased inflammation and oxidative stress both in TME and metastases, together with QoL amelioration. We hypothesized that these effects could be due to either a direct anticancer effect and/or to a secondary/indirect impact of Micotherapy U-Care on systemic inflammation/immunomodulation. To address this question, we presently focused on apoptosis/proliferation, investigating specific molecules, i.e., PARP1, p53, BAX, Bcl2, and PCNA, whose critical role in BC is well recognized. We revealed that Micotherapy U-Care is effective to influence balance between cell death and proliferation, which appeared strictly interconnected and inversely related (p53/Bax vs. Bcl2/PARP1/PCNA expression trends). MM blend displayed a direct effect, with different efficacy extent on cancer cells and TME, forcing tumor cells to apoptosis. Yet again, this study supports the potential of MM extracts, as adjuvant supplement in the TNBC management.     

Purification of neutral protease by dye affinity chromatography

Twenty triazinic dyes were assayed as ligands for the chromatographic affinity purification of a neutral protease from Flavourzyme^™, a commercial preparation. Screening at pH 4.0 allowed the selection of eight dyes on the basis of their high protease adsorption. When the pH was set to 5.0 in order to increase selectivity, only Yellow HE-4R, Red HE-3B, and Cibacron Blue F3G-A maintained protease adsorption at high values. Neither maximum capacities nor dissociation constants calculated from isotherms measured at 8 and 25°C showed great differences. By contrast, a strong temperature effect was evidenced in the elution step: elution at 8°C allowed 70, 81, and 98% recovery of adsorbed protease with Yellow HE-4R, Red HE-3B, and Cibacron Blue F3G-A, respectively, whereas only 20% recovery was attained at 25°C. Based on the results obtained, a purification process for the neutral protease contained in Flavourzyme with Cibacron Blue F3G-A as the affinity ligand was developed, yielding 96% of electrophoretically pure enzyme in a single step, the specific activity rising from 850 to 3650 U/mg.     

Potassium-doped FePc thin-film on metal surfaces: observation of different empty state occupation

Iron-Phthalocyanine molecules deposited on the Cu(119) vicinal surface form molecular chains along the vicinal surface steps, as deduced by the low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) reconstruction pattern. The work-function lowers at the FePc single-layer completion, due to the formation of an interface dipole. Further FePc deposition induces a different growth morphology, as suggested by the slope discontinuity in the work function variation. Upon depositing potassium onto the FePc thin-film prepared on Cu(119), the K-injected electrons fill up the Fe-d-associated and ligand-π-related orbitals, as observed by means of high-resolution ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy.     

Determination of traces of iron in indium phosphide by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry combined with solvent extraction

An electrothermal atomic absorption (ETAAS) method for the determination of traces of iron (0.1-1.0 microgram g-1) in Fe-doped indium phosphide (InP) has been developed. In order to overcome the indium matrix-effect and to achieve a useful detection limit, a preliminary solvent-extraction of Fe(III) with acetylacetone (HAA) is necessary. After sample dissolution with hydrochloric acid (1 + 1) the digest is evaporated to dryness, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) with nitric acid, the residue is dissolved in 0.01 mol L-1 HCl and the iron is extracted at pH 2.0 with 0.5 mol L-1 HAA in toluene. The organic phase is injected into the graphite furnace and the iron is directly evaluated by external organic standard calibration. The limit of detection (3SB) resulting from further in-situ preconcentration is 0.03 microgram g-1. When the method was applied to the analysis of real samples containing 0.2-0.7 microgram g-1 Fe, the RSD was in the range 8-21%. Results were compared with those independently obtained on the decomposed sample solution with inductively coupled atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The detection limit of the ICP-AES method, that needs matrix-matched standards, is 0.20 microgram g-1.     

Magnetite, a model system for mixed-valence oxides, does not show charge ordering

We have investigated the charge ordering (CO) in magnetite below the Verwey transition. A new set of half-integer and mixed-integer superlattice reflections of the low-temperature phase have been studied by x-ray resonant scattering. None of these reflections show features characteristic of CO. We demonstrate the absence of CO along the c axis with the periodicity of either the cubic lattice q=(001) or the doubled cubic lattice q=(001/2). This result suggests that the Verwey transition is caused by strong electron-phonon interaction instead of an electronic ordering on the octahedral Fe atoms.     

Anchoring sulphur-headgroup organic molecules at Cu(1 0 0): Tailoring the interface electronic states

Sulphur-headgroup organic molecules have been chemisorbed on Cu(1 0 0) as self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in highly-ordered two-fold symmetry structures, and the electronic states induced at the interface have been measured by photoemission: a close similarity of the main interface states for methane-thiolate and mercaptobenzoxazole on Cu(1 0 0) in the same p(2 × 2)-phase is observed. The bonding states for methane-thiolate/Cu(1 0 0) in the p(2 × 2) and c(2 × 2) structures have been compared to ab-initio calculation of the total density of states (DOS) for the S/Cu(1 0 0) system in the same phases. The major role of the S-Cu bonding to determine the density of state evolution at the interface is brought to light. The observed differences in the two phases depend mainly on the charge distribution associated to the different molecular packing, with a minor role of the radical group.     

Global existence and exponential stability for a contact problem between two thermoelastic beams

In this paper we analyze a dynamic unilateral contact problem between two thermoelastic beams. We establish the existence of a weak global-in-time solution, by a penalization method. Moreover, we study the asymptotic behavior of such a solution proving that the energy associated to the system decays exponentially to zero, as time goes to infinity.     

FTIR microspectroscopy of melanocytic skin lesions: a preliminary study

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy has been employed to investigate benign (ordinary dermal and Reed nevi), dysplastic and malignant (invasive melanoma) skin lesions through the analysis of spectral changes of melanocytes as well as in the evaluation of the presence of melanin. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis led to a satisfactory separation of malignant from dysplastic and normal melanocytes. Also, on enlarging the clustering with spectra from Reed and dermal nevi, the multivariate analysis segregated well the spectral data into discrete clusters, allowing the obtaining of reliable average spectra for analysis at the molecular level of the main groups or components responsible for the biological and biochemical changes. The most significant spectral characteristics appear to be related to differences in secondary protein structures, in nucleic acid conformation, in intra- and intermolecular bonding. In all cases, supervised and unsupervised spectral analyses resulted in satisfactory agreement with histopathological findings.     

Polymer supported calixarene derivative useful for solid-phase synthesis application

A calix[4]arene derivative has been anchored to carboxyl CPG and TentaGel supports by an easily cleavable ester bond and DMT groups allow a simple loading evaluation via UV-vis spectroscopy. The loading of the calixarene on TentaGel resin has also been estimated by HR-MAS NMR experiments. The potential of the polymer supported calixarenes (9 and 10) in solid phase synthesis has been tested by condensation of four thymine nucleotide units onto the upper rim of the calix[4]arene skeleton.
