A generating function for all semi-magic squares and the volume of the Birkhoff polytope

We present a multivariate generating function for all n×n nonnegative integral matrices with all row and column sums equal to a positive integer t, the so called semi-magic squares. As a consequence we obtain formulas for all coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of the polytope B _n of n×n doubly-stochastic matrices, also known as the Birkhoff polytope. In particular we derive formulas for the volumes of B _n and any of its faces.     

Quasi likelihood analysis of volatility and nondegeneracy of statistical random field

We construct a quasi likelihood analysis for diffusions under the high-frequency sampling over a finite time interval. For this, we prove a polynomial type large deviation inequality for the quasi likelihood random field. Then it becomes crucial to prove nondegeneracy of a key index _χ0${\chi }_0$. By nature of the sampling setting, _χ0${\chi }_0$ is random. This makes it difficult to apply a naïve sufficient condition, and requires a new machinery. In order to establish a quasi likelihood analysis, we need quantitative estimate of the nondegeneracy of _χ0${\chi }_0$. The existence of a nondegenerate local section of a certain tensor bundle associated with the statistical random field solves this problem.     

A large deviation principle for (r,p)-capacities on the Wiener space

Summary We formulate and prove a large deviation principle for the (r, p)-capacity on an abstract Wiener space. As an application, we obtain a sharpening of Strassen's law of the iterated logarithm in terms of the capacity.     

Regeneration of small eddies by data assimilation in turbulence

The effect of data assimilation of large-scale eddies on small-scale eddies in turbulence is studied by direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of Navier-Stokes turbulence with Taylor microscale Reynolds numbers up to 179. The DNSs show that even if the data of small-scale eddies are lost at some initial instant, they can be regenerated from the data of large-scale eddies under the condition that Fourier modes with wave number less than a critical wave number k(*) are continuously assimilated, where k(*) approximately 0.2eta(-1) with eta identical with(nu(3)/epsilon)(1/4), epsilon the mean energy dissipation rate, and nu the viscosity.     

Mapping analyses of Fe-diffused mc-Si using M?ssbauer microscope and photoluminescence

Twenty CK chondrites collected in the Antarctica Continent were characterized by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), prompt gamma ray analysis (PGA), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and ⁵⁷Fe-M?ssbauer spectroscopy. As a result of elemental analysis, it was revealed that 18.2~26.4 mass% of iron was included in the each chondrite. M?ssbauer spectrum of LEW86258, classified as a typical CK chondrite, was found to be composed of two paramagnetic doublets and two magnetic sextets. M?ssbauer spectra were assigned to the absorption due to forsterite (Mg_1.36Fe_0.64SiO₄) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄), as also confirmed by XRD. XRD study of LAP03834, reclassified from CK to R chondrite, revealed the presence of crystalline phase due to forsterite. These results indicate that LAP03834 and related chondrites, i.e., MET01149, LAP03923 and MAC02453, should be reclassified as R or LL chondrite.     

Development of frequency tunable, medium power gyrotrons (GyrotronFU series) as submillimeter wave radiation sources

High frequency, medium power gyrotrons (Gyrotron FU series) have been developed at Fukui University as radiation sources covering a broad band from millimeter to submillimeter wave region. They have already been applied to high frequency electron spin resonance and to submillimeter wave scattering in plasma. Many parameters of the gyrotron series could be useful for applications in several new areas. The development and some applications of the Gyrotron FU series are summarized in this paper     

Visible-light photocatalysis of ZnO deposited on nanoporous Au

ZnO deposited on nanoporous Au showed photocatalytic decomposition toward methyl orange under visible light, unlike ZnO sputtered on flat Au without a nanoporous structure. First-principles calculations suggested that the surface lattice disorder in nanoporous Au induced a band gap narrowing and a large built-in electric field in the adjacent ZnO, resulting in the visible-light photocatalytic response.
