Trinuclear heterobimetallic complexes with binucleating dithioxamides: stereoselective synthesis and solution behavior involving Pd-N bond rupture

Bischelate platinum(II) complexes of the type [Pt(H-R(2)-N(2)C(2)S(2))(2)] (H-R(2)-N(2)C(2)S(2)(-) = dialkyl-dithioxamidate) are ditopic receptors which, after coordination of the first Pd(eta(3)-allyl)(+) moiety, induce the orientation of the second palladium-allyl fragment. Thus, a series of trimetallic complexes of formula bis-[(eta(3)-allyl)-palladium(II)](mu-bis-dialkyl-dithioxamidate-platinum(II) kappa-S,S-kappa-S',S'-Pt-kappa-N,N-Pd-kappa-N',N'-Pd') has been prepared in which the allyl fragments are oriented toward the same side of the molecular plane. We have also prepared the trimetallic complex using a dithioxamide obtained from the racemic phenylethylamine. Only two isomers were produced in equimolar ratio: the racemate that has four homochiral alkyl substituents and the mesoform containing the meso-dithioxamide that has homochiral substituents on the same side of molecular plane. Under the effect of the temperature, the trimetallic Pd-Pt-Pd complexes undergo rapid allyl isomerization; the mechanism of the isomerization, which is similar to that found by us in an analogue Pt-Pd bimetallic complex, is discussed. The crystal and molecular structure of bis-[(eta(3)-allyl)-palladium(II)](mu-bis-[S]-phenylethyl-dithioxamidate-platinum(II) kappa-S,S-kappa-S',S'-Pt-kappa-N,N-Pd-kappa-N',N'-Pd') has been reported.     

Development of an in situ fiber optic Raman system to monitor hydrothermal vents

The development of a field portable fiber optic Raman system modified from commercially available components that can operate remotely on battery power and withstand the corrosive environment of the hydrothermal vents is discussed. The Raman system is designed for continuous monitoring in the deep-sea environment. A 785 nm diode laser was used in conjunction with a sapphire ball fiber optic Raman probe, single board computer, and a CCD detector. Using the system at ambient conditions the detection limits of SO(4)(2-), CO(3)(2-) and NO(3)(-) were determined to be approximately 0.11, 0.36 and 0.12 g l(-1) respectively. Mimicking the cold conditions of the sea floor by placing the equipment in a refrigerator yielded slightly worse detection limits of approximately 0.16 g l(-1) for SO(4)(-2) and 0.20 g l(-1) for NO(3)(-). Addition of minerals commonly found in vent fluid plumes also decreased the detection limits to approximately 0.33 and 0.34 g l(-1) respectively for SO(4)(-2) and NO(3)(-).     

Unsymmetrically substituted furoxans. Part 16 . Reaction of benzenesulfonyl substituted furoxans with ethanol and ethanethiol in basic medium

The use of benzenesulfonyl substituted furoxans as flexible intermediates for the synthesis of new functionalized furoxans interesting for their potential biological properties is discussed. Reaction of benzenesul-fonylphenylsulfonylfuroxan isomers 7a and 7b with ethanol and ethanethiol in basic medium affords the expected ethers and sulphides respectively. Reaction of bis(benzenesulfonyl)furoxan ( 1 ) with ethanol in basic medium gives 3-benzenesulfonyl-4-ethoxyfuroxan ( 2 ) or diethoxyfuroxan (3), according to the experimental procedure. In contrast the reaction of 1 with ethanethiol gives a mixture of substitution compounds and the 4-benzenesulfonyl-3-ethylthiofurazan ( 11 ). The structure of the compounds has been assigned by nmr spectroscopy and, in the case of 3-benzenesulfonyl-4-ethylthiofuroxan ( 9b ), confirmed by X-ray analysis.     

Studies on the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. Part X. One-step route to 1,2-dimethyl-3-R-5-salicyloylimino-3-pyrazolines

This communication outlines the development of a direct synthetic route to 1,2-dimethyl-3-R-5-salicyloyl-imino-3-pyrazolines, starting from readily available 3(5)-aminopyrazoles 1a, b, c and methyl salicylate. The structures of the new compounds 3a, b, c were determined on the basis of analytical and spectroscopic data as well as on the acid hydrolysis products.     

Regiocontrolled synthesis of enantiopure 3,3'-thiosubstituted biphenyls

Sulfenylation of 6,6'-dimethoxy-2,2'-dihydroxybiphenyl, used as a racemic mixture and single enantiomers, by phthalimidesulfenyl chloride afforded the corresponding 3,3'-N,N'-dithiophthalimide with complete regioselectivity. Simple manipulations of the latter compound allowed access to the corresponding bis-thiol or o-thioquinone as useful intermediates for the synthesis of new sulfur-containing open-chain and macrocyclic C(2) enantiopure ligands. The application of this methodology to the preparation of a biphenyl bearing two cysteine units as potential HIV-1 protease inhibitor is also described.     

Densities and excess molar volumes for binary mixtures of N,N-dimethylformamide+ 1,2-dimethoxyethane

Densities are reported for N,N-dimethylformamide and 1,2-dimethoxyethane binary mixtures at different mole fractions covering the whole miscibility range and at 19 temperatures ranging from –10 to 80°C. The experimental density data have been fitted by empirical relations and the excess volumes by a Redlich-Kister equation. The 11 N,N-dimethylformamide and 1,2-dimethoxyethane adduct appears to be stable throughout the temperature range. A comparison with other DMF containing mixtures is made.     

Solvation thermodynamics of water in nonpolar organic solvents indicate the occurrence of nontraditional hydrogen bonds

Experimental data for the solvation of water in nonpolar organic solvents indicate that the process is spontaneous under the Ben-Naim standard conditions, due to a large and negative enthalpy change. The process is analyzed by considering that the solvation Gibbs energy change is given by the sum of two opposing terms: the work to create a suitable cavity and the work to turn on the attractive solute-solvent interactions. Basic calculations point out unequivocally that, beyond the van der Waals contributions, additional favorable interactions occur between water and the surrounding solvent molecules. These additional favorable interactions should be nontraditional hydrogen bonds such as those between the delocalized pi-electron cloud of the aromatic ring and the hydrogen atoms of water, and those between the CH groups of both aliphatics and aromatics and the oxygen atom of water.     

Configurational analysis of the natural product passifloricin A by quantum mechanical C NMR GIAO chemical shift calculations

Quantum chemical calculations at mPW1PW91 level, with full geometry optimization, using the 6-31g(d) basis set, and GIAO (gauge including atomic orbitals) ¹³C NMR chemical shifts using the 6-31g(d,p) basis set, are here utilized as a support to define the configurational features of the natural product passifloricin A, whose previously proposed relative configuration has been recently shown, by synthetic studies, to be incorrect. This study suggests that the relative stereostructure for passifloricin A corresponds to the δ-lactone of the (5R,7R,9S,11R)-tetrahydroxyhexacos-2-enoic acid.     

Unusual nitration of substituted 7-amino-1,8-naphthyridine in the synthesis of compounds with antiplatelet activity

Several 1,8-naphthyridine derivatives have been diazotizated to obtain the corresponding hydroxy derivatives or mixture of hydroxy and hydroxy nitro derivatives. The respective amounts of hydroxy and hydroxy nitro derivatives depends on the nature of the substituents, on their position on the naphthyridine nucleus, on the amount of sodium nitrite and on the reaction temperature. A study of the electronic density of some molecules suggests a possible explanation of the effects induced by the nature of the substituents and of their position. Some of the compounds were tested for their ability to inhibit human platelet aggregation in vitro induced by arachidonic acid. Only compound 26 showed interesting antiplatelet activity.
