Analysis of a unilateral contact problem taking into account adhesion and friction

In this paper, we investigate a contact problem between a viscoelastic body and a rigid foundation, when both the effects of the (irreversible) adhesion and of the friction are taken into account. We describe the adhesion phenomenon in terms of a damage surface parameter according to Frémond?s theory, and we model unilateral contact by Signorini conditions, and friction by a nonlocal Coulomb law. All the constraints on the internal variables as well as the contact and the friction conditions are rendered by means of subdifferential operators, whence the highly nonlinear character of the resulting PDE system. Our main result states the existence of a global-in-time solution (to a suitable variational formulation) of the related Cauchy problem. It is proved by an approximation procedure combined with time discretization.     

Existence and multiplicity results to Neumann problems for elliptic equations involving the p-Laplacian

In this paper, existence results of positive solutions to a Neumann problem involving the p-Laplacian are established. Multiplicity results are also pointed out. The approach is based on variational methods.     

An examination of tissue engineered scaffolds in a bioreactor

Replacement tissues, designed to fill in articular cartilage defects, should exhibit the same properties as the native material. The aim of this study is to foster the understanding of, firstly, the mechanical behavior of the material itself and, secondly, the influence of cultivation parameters on cell seeded implants as well as on cell migration into acellular implants. In this study, acellular cartilage replacement material is theoretically, numerically and experimentally investigated regarding its viscoelastic properties, where a phenomenological model for practical applications is developed. Dissipative operators and additive perturbations in locally convex spaces

Let be a densely defined operator on a Banach space X. Characterizations of when generates a C₀‐semigroup on X are known. The famous result of Lumer and Phillips states that it is so if and only if is dissipative and is dense in X for some . There exists also a rich amount of Banach space results concerning perturbations of dissipative operators. In a recent paper Tyran–Kamińska provides perturbation criteria of dissipative operators in terms of ergodic properties. These results, and others, are shown to remain valid in the setting of general non–normable locally convex spaces. Applications of the results to concrete examples of operators on function spaces are also presented.     

A kinematically coupled time-splitting scheme for fluid–structure interaction in blood flow

We present a new time-splitting scheme for the numerical simulation of fluid–structure interaction between blood flow and vascular walls. This scheme deals in a successful way with the problem of the added mass effect. The scheme is modular and it embodies the stability properties of implicit schemes at the low computational cost of loosely coupled ones.     

When is a Cleft Extension H-Azumaya?

We show which H ^op -cleft extensions of k for a dual quasi-triangular Hopf algebra (H, r) are H-Azumaya. The result is given in terms of bijectivity of a map defined in terms of the universal r-form r and the 2-cocycle σ, generalizing a well-known result for the commutative and co-commutative case. We illustrate the Theorem with an explicit computation for the Hopf algebras of type E(n).Presented by A. Verschoren

Subsystem entropy for ? sofic shifts

We prove that any ?^d shift of finite type with positive topological entropy has a family of subsystems of finite type whose entropies are dense in the interval from zero to the entropy of the original shift. We show a similar result for ?^d sofic shifts, and also show every ?^d sofic shift can be covered by a ?^d shift of finite type arbitrarily close in entropy.
