We report on an original technique for the in situ coating of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microchannels with borosilicate glass, starting from an active nonaqueous and alkali-free precursor solution. By chemical reaction of this active solution inside the microchannel and subsequent thermal annealing, a protective and chemically inert glass borosilicate coating is bonded to the PDMS. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the active solution show that it is composed of a silicon oxide network with boron connectivity. Thermal gravimetric analysis demonstrates the absence of organic content when curing is done above 150 degrees C. The borosilicate nature of the glass coating covalently bonded to the PDMS is demonstrated using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy show a smooth and crack-free coating. The latter is used as an efficient protective barrier against diffusion in PDMS of fluorescent rhodamine B dye that is dissolved either in water or in toluene. Moreover, the coating prevents swelling and consequent structural damage of the PDMS when the latter is exposed to harsh chemicals such as toluene.  相似文献

We report a combined theoretical and experimental study of the structural failure of viral shells under mechanical stress. We find that discontinuities in the force-indentation curve associated with failure should appear when the so-called F?ppl-von Kármán (FvK) number exceeds a critical value. A nanoindentation study of a viral shell subject to a soft-mode instability, where the stiffness of the shell decreases with increasing pH, confirms the predicted onset of failure as a function of the FvK number.  相似文献

The synthesis of polypeptide‐containing block copolymers combining N‐carboxyanhydride (NCA) ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was investigated. An amide initiator comprising an amine function for the NCA polymerization and an activated bromide for ATRP was used. Well‐defined polypeptide macroinitiators were obtained from γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate NCA, O‐benzyl‐serine NCA, and N‐benzyloxy‐L ‐lysine. Subsequent ATRP macroinitiation from the polypeptides resulted in higher than expected molecular weights. Analysis of the reaction products and model reactions confirmed that this is due to the high frequency of termination reactions by disproportionation in the initial phase of the ATRP, which is inherent in the amide initiator structure. In some cases selective precipitation could be applied to remove unreacted macroinitiator to yield well‐defined block copolymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi Hubbard model is studied in the canonical ensemble using a quantum Monte Carlo method. We focus on the case where both species have half filling in order to maximize the pairing correlations between the bosons and the fermions. In case of equal hopping we distinguish among phase separation, a Luttinger liquid phase, and a phase characterized by strong singlet pairing between the species. True long-range density waves exist with unequal hopping amplitudes.  相似文献

The shear flow of two-dimensional foams is probed as a function of shear rate and disorder. Disordered, bidisperse foams exhibit strongly shear rate dependent velocity profiles. This behavior is captured quantitatively in a simple model based on the balance of the time-averaged drag forces in the system, which are found to exhibit power-law scaling with the foam velocity and strain rate. Disorder makes the scaling of the bulk drag forces different from that of the local interbubble drag forces, which we evidence by rheometrical measurements. In monodisperse, ordered foams, rate independent velocity profiles are found, which lends further credibility to this picture.  相似文献

Microporous polymer frameworks have attracted considerable attention to make novel separation layers owing to their highly porous structure, high permeability, and excellent molecular separation. This study concerns the fabrication and properties of thin melamine-based microporous polymer networks with a layer thickness of around 400 nm, supported on an α-alumina support and their potential use in organic solvent nanofiltration. The modified membranes show excellent solvent purification performances, such as n-heptane permeability as high as 9.2 L m−2 h−1 bar −1 in combination with a very high rejection of approximately 99 % for organic dyes with molecular weight of ≥457 Da. These values are higher than for the majority of the state-of-the-art membranes. The membranes further exhibit outstanding long-term operation stability. This work significantly expands the possibilities of using ceramic membranes in organic solvent nanofiltration.  相似文献

We discuss the successful transport of jurkat cells and 5D10 hybridoma cells using a reciprocating micropump with nozzle-diffuser elements. The effect of the pumping action on cell viability and proliferation, as well as on the damaging of cellular membranes is quantified using four types of well-established biological tests: a trypan blue solution, the tetrazolium salt WST-1 reagent, the LDH cytotoxicity assay and the calcium imaging ATP test. The high viability levels obtained after pumping, even for the most sensitive cells (5D10), indicate that a micropump with nozzle-diffuser elements can be very appropriate for handling living cells in cell-on-a-chip applications.  相似文献

Storing and transporting of urine samples for doping analysis, as performed by the anti-doping organizations associated with the World Anti-Doping Agency, does not include a specific protocol for cooled transport from the place of urine sampling to the doping laboratory, although low cost cooling facilities can easily be made available. As a result, microbial and thermal degradation of the chemical substances in the urine may occur, which may lead to false negative or false positive results in the subsequent doping analysis. This scientifically and morally unacceptable practice is still maintained in spite of publications demonstrating that immediate cooling is an absolute requirement. Given the enormous societal consequences of positive tests, the lack of a controllable chain of custody during transport should be outlawed. This paper proposes a simple method, based on immediate cooling and cooled transport, which can easily be implemented in developed countries at low cost.  相似文献
