All-optical control of gigahertz acoustic resonances by forward stimulated interpolarization scattering in a photonic crystal fiber

We report the observation of a novel nonlinear optoacoustic phenomenon, that we name forward stimulated interpolarization scattering. When two frequency-offset laser signals are colaunched into orthogonally polarized guided modes of a birefringent small-core (1.8 μm diameter) photonic crystal fiber, a pattern of axially moving polarization fringes is produced, with a velocity and spacing that depends on the frequency offset. At values of frequency offset in the few-GHz range, the pattern of moving fringes can perfectly match the phase velocity and axial wavelength (3.9 mm) of the torsional-radial acoustic mode tightly guided in the core. An intense optoacoustic interaction ensues, leading to efficient nonlinear exchange of power from the higher frequency (pump) mode to the orthogonally polarized lower frequency (Stokes) mode. A full-vectorial theory is developed to explain the observations.     

Universality of level spacing distributions in classical chaos

We suggest that random matrix theory applied to a matrix of lengths of classical trajectories can be used in classical billiards to distinguish chaotic from non-chaotic behavior. We consider in 2D the integrable circular and rectangular billiard, the chaotic cardioid, Sinai and stadium billiard as well as mixed billiards from the Limaçon/Robnik family. From the spectrum of the length matrix we compute the level spacing distribution, the spectral auto-correlation and spectral rigidity. We observe non-generic (Dirac comb) behavior in the integrable case and Wignerian behavior in the chaotic case. For the Robnik billiard close to the circle the distribution approaches a Poissonian distribution. The length matrix elements of chaotic billiards display approximate GOE behavior. Our findings provide evidence for universality of level fluctuations—known from quantum chaos—to hold also in classical physics.     

Resonance widths in open microwave cavities studied by harmonic inversion

From the measurement of a reflection spectrum of an open microwave cavity, the poles of the scattering matrix in the complex plane have been determined. The resonances have been extracted by means of the harmonic inversion method. By this, it became possible to resolve the resonances in a regime where the linewidths exceed the mean level spacing up to a factor of 10, a value inaccessible in experiments up to now. The obtained experimental distributions of linewidths were found to be in perfect agreement with predictions from random matrix theory when wall absorption and fluctuations caused by couplings to additional channels are considered.     

Symmetry-relations for the classical two-dimensional nonlinear O(n-σ)-model

We prove the identity of two Bäcklund transformations discussed in the literature and the corresponding conservation laws for the nonlinear O(n-) model. Furthermore, we exhibit more clearly the relation between the dual transformation and the Noether symmetry.     

An iterative method of evaluation of elastic-plastic deflections of hyperstatic framed structures

Summary The concept of substitutive concentrated elastic-plastic rotations, replacing actual elasticplastic zones is used, together with an iterative method of determination of the bending moment distribution to simplify the evaluation of elastic-plastic deflections of hyperstatic beams and frames.

Eine iterative Methode der Auswertung von elastisch-plastischen Verschiebungen für statisch unbestimmte Rahmen

Übersicht Die Idee von fiktiven Ersatzrotationen, welche die tatsächlichen elastisch-plastischen Zonen modelliert, wird mit einer iterativen Methode kombiniert, um eine relativ einfache Bestimmung von Biegemomentenfeldern in statisch unbestimmten Balken und Rahmen zu ermöglichen. Die resultierenden Verschiebungen, ergeben sich mit ausreichender Genauigkeit.

     

Branching ratios between correlated and uncorrelated two electron transitions into the K-shell of Al,Ca, Fe and Ni ions

The branching ratios between the radiative single and double electron transitions into the doubly ionized K-shell were measured as a function of the atomic number. The results are compared with various theoretical predictions.     

Evidence for a molecular REC-effect in heavy ion collisions

Anisotropy spectra of the MOK X-ray transitions have been measured in F-Al, Al-Al and Cl-Al collisions as a function of the projectile energy. The measurements at higher energies indicate a new molecular effect due to transitions from quasicontinuum states to the MO 1s _σ-orbitals.
