Water‐soluble polymeric amphiphiles derived from acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and octadecyl monomers in which the linker groups vary among acryloyl [octadecyl methacrylate (ODMAc)], maleate [octadecyl maleate ester (ODME)], and maleamic acid [octadecyl maleamic acid (ODMA)] have been synthesized. The dissociation behavior in water from potentiometric titration suggests that these polymers show resistance to neutralization. This might arise from coil structures, which effect the destabilization of sulfonate ions because of a proximity effect. The effect of the ? COOH group in modifying the dissociation behavior in the copolymers AMPS–ODME and AMPS–ODMA is indicated. The ratio of the intensities of the third vibronic peak (I3) to the first vibronic peak (I1) of the fluoroprobe pyrene in the presence of polymer solutions shows negligible changes as a function of pH, and this suggests the retention of micropolarity. The high I3/I1 value observed in the presence of the ODMAc polymer suggests intermolecular association. The reduction in the reduced viscosity with the concentration of the polymers suggests the polyelectrolyte behavior of all the copolymers. The progressive decrease in the reduced viscosity from 120 to 95 mL/g when the degree of ionization increases from 0.5 to 1 for the ODME polymer suggests changes in the solution structure. AMPS–ODMA and AMPS–ODME polymers exhibit significant adsorption at the interface and exhibit equilibrium surface tensions of 58.8 and 56.3 mN/m, respectively. The lower surface activity and higher reduced viscosity of ODMAc polymer solutions further support the formation of intermolecular associated or network structures. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. From Maxwell's equations, we compute the speed and the direction of propagation of active power refractedfrom air into a negative index material. We prove, both analytically and numerically that the power mayrefract positively even if phase fronts refract negatively. A modified Butler–Volmer equation for the reduction of CO2 by considering multi-step single-electron transfer reactions is presented. Exchange current density formulations free from arbitrary order dependency on the partial pressures of reactants and products are proposed for Ni and Pt surfaces. Button cell simulations are performed for Ni-YSZ/YSZ/LSM, Pt-YSZ/YSZ/Pt, and Pt/YSZ/Pt systems using two different electrochemical models, and simulation results are compared against experimental observations. The first electrochemical model considers charge transfer reactions occurring at the interface between the electrode and dense electrolyte, and the second model considers the charge transfer reactions occurring throughout the thickness of the cermet electrode. Single-channel simulations are further performed to asses the O2 production capacity of CO2 electrolysis system.  相似文献

Membrane proteins engage in a variety of contacts with their surrounding lipids, but distinguishing between specifically bound lipids, and non‐specific, annular interactions is a challenging problem. Applying native mass spectrometry to three membrane protein complexes with different lipid‐binding properties, we explore the ability of detergents to compete with lipids bound in different environments. We show that lipids in annular positions on the presenilin homologue protease are subject to constant exchange with detergent. By contrast, detergent‐resistant lipids bound at the dimer interface in the leucine transporter show decreased koff rates in molecular dynamics simulations. Turning to the lipid flippase MurJ, we find that addition of the natural substrate lipid‐II results in the formation of a 1:1 protein–lipid complex, where the lipid cannot be displaced by detergent from the highly protected active site. In summary, we distinguish annular from non‐annular lipids based on their exchange rates in solution.  相似文献

Two sets of terpolymers, polymer A and polymer B consisting of almost same level of 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) component at 0.635 ± 0.005 m and varying dodecyl methacrylate (DoDMAc) and monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) acrylate (PEGAc) components have been designed. Polymer A, consisting of less C12 component, has been shown to promote intermolecular aggregated structures wherein C12 domains exhibit compact packing characteristics. It is demonstrated that in polymer B, AMPS segments are predominantly present as ionic clusters contributing to a high pKa at about 9.50 for a low α of 0.20. From the results of interfacial adsorption estimations at air/solution and water/hexane interface, it is shown that open coil structures provided under high pH (>9.0) conditions promote efficiency of adsorption. This is shown from higher surface excess concentration (Γ) and lower interfacial area (a) estimated using Gibbs adsorption isotherm equation. For example, at water/hexane interface, polymer A exhibits Γ of 1.20 × 10?3 moles/1000 m2 at pH 3.2 and 1.97 × 10?3 moles/1000 m2 at pH 10.0. Significantly, in case of polymer B consisting of ionic clusters of AMPS, adsorption at the liquid/liquid interface is more efficient in comparison to polymer A at all pH. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A simple, effective and inexpensive fiber optic sensor for investigating the setting characteristics of various grades of cement is described. A finite length of unsheathed multimode optical fiber laid inside the cement mix, is subjected to stress during the setting process. The microbends created on the fiber due to this stress directly influence the intensity of light propagating through the fiber. Continuous monitoring of such variations in the light output transmitted through the fiber gives a clear measure of the setting characteristics of the cement mix, thus providing a simple and elegant technique of great practical importance in the field of civil engineering. The smart fiber optic sensor described above can be incorporated into a building during the construction process itself so that continuous monitoring of the deterioration process for the entire life time of the building can be carried out.  相似文献

Thermal lens signals in solutions of rhodamine B laser dye in methanol are measured using the dual beam pump-probe technique. The nature of variations of signal strength with concentration is found to be different for 514 and 488 nm Ar+ laser excitations. However, both the pump wavelengths produce an oscillatory type variation of thermal lens signal amplitude with the concentration of the dye solution. Probable reasons for this peculiar behaviour (which is absent in the case of fluorescent intensity) are mentioned.  相似文献
