Arrays of horizontally-oriented mini-reservoirs generate steady microfluidic flows for continuous perfusion cell culture and gradient generation

This paper describes the use of arrays of horizontally-oriented reservoirs to deliver liquids through microchannels at a constant flow rate over extended periods of time (hours to days). The horizontal orientation maintains a constant hydraulic pressure drop across microfluidic channels even as the volumes of liquids within the reservoirs change over time. For a given channel-reservoir system, the magnitude of the flow velocity depends linearly on the height difference between reservoirs. The simple structure and operation mechanism make this pumping system versatile. A one-inlet-one-outlet system was used to continuously deliver media for perfusion cell culture, and an array of inlet reservoirs coupled to an outlet reservoir via microchannels was used to drive flows of multiple laminar streams. The parallel pumping scheme conveniently generated various smooth and step concentration gradients, and allowed evaluation of the effect of colchicine on myoblasts. Since the reservoir arrays are configured to be compatible with commercialized multichannel pipettors designed for 96 well plate handling, this simple pumping scheme is envisioned to be broadly useful for medium to high throughput microfluidic perfusion cell culture assays, cell migration assays, multiple laminar flow drug tests, and any other applications needing multiple microfluidic streams.     

Add a Pinch of Tetrel: The Transformation of a Centrosymmetric Metal into a Nonsymmorphic and Chiral Semiconductor

Centrosymmetric skutterudite RhP₃ was converted to a nonsymmorphic and chiral compound RhSi_0.3P_2.7 (space group P2₁2₁2₁) by means of partial replacement of Si for P. The structure, determined by a combination of X-ray crystallography and solid state ³¹P NMR, exhibits branched polyanionic P/Si chains that are unique among metal phosphides. A driving force to stabilize the locally noncentrosymmetric cis-RhSi₂P₄ and fac-RhSi₃P₃ fragments is π-electron back-donation between the Rh t_2g-type orbitals and the unoccupied antibonding Si/P orbitals, which is more effective for Si than for P. In situ studies and total energy calculations revealed the metastable nature of RhSi_0.3P_2.7. Electronic structure calculations predicted centrosymmetric cubic RhP₃ to be metallic which was confirmed by transport properties measurements. In contrast, the electronic structure for chiral orthorhombic RhSi_0.3P_2.7 contained a bandgap, and this compound was shown to be a narrow gap semiconductor.     

Monoids of non-halting programs with tests

In order to study the axiomatization of the if-then-else construct over possibly non-halting programs and tests, the notion of C-sets was introduced in the literature by considering the tests from an abstract C-algebra. This paper extends the notion of C-sets to C-monoids which include the composition of programs as well as composition of programs with tests. For the class of C-monoids where the C-algebras are adas a canonical representation in terms of functional C-monoids is obtained.     

The development of phosphinoamine–Pd(II)–imidazole complexes: implications in room‐temperature Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reaction

The reaction of N‐methylimidazole (N‐MeIm) and N‐butylimidazole (N‐BuIm) with the complexes [PdCl₂(PPh₂py–P,N)] and [PdCl₂(PPh₂Etpy–P,N)] in the presence of NH₄PF₆ under N₂ at room temperature afforded four new cationic Pd(II) complexes [PdCl(PPh₂py–P,N)(N‐MeIm)](PF₆) ( 1 ), [PdCl(PPh₂py–P,N)(N‐BuIm)](PF₆) ( 2 ), [PdCl(PPh₂Etpy–P,N)(N‐MeIm)](PF₆) ( 4 ) and [PdCl(PPh₂Etpy‐P,N)(N‐BuIm)](PF₆) ( 5 ) in good yields, where PPh₂py is 2‐(diphenylphosphino)pyridine and PPh₂Etpy is 2‐{2‐(diphenylphosphino)ethyl}pyridine). The complexes were fully characterized. The catalytic activities of these complexes were investigated for Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reactions at room temperature. Locally Desarguesian spaces

In Riemannian spaces, locally Desarguesian spaces have constant curvature and are therefore locally symmetric. This does not hold for Finsler spaces, so that locally Desarguesian spaces represent a generalization other than the obvious one we studied previously of (certain) Riemannian symmetric spaces. In this paper we discuss them in detail; as an example of the results obtained we mention that a simply connected locally Desarguesian space without conjugate points is globally Desarguesian. Applications are then given to spaces which are locally symmetric in a wider sense. We also study (and in Minkowski spaces determine exactly) the properties of functions which measure the distance of a point from those on a line.
