Quantum mechanics in phase space: I. Unicity of the Wigner distribution function

The joint distribution function in phase space is related to the density matrix by an integral transformation which depends on the rule of correspondence used. All the requirements which can be restrictive for the kernel function defining the transformation are studied. It is shown that the conditions of Galilei invariance, unitarity, reality and normalization lead to the Wigner kernel function in a unique way. Galilei invariance, the requirement that the free particle behaves classically, and the conditions to obtain the correct mixed distributions also lead to the same result.

Observations of resonance cones near the lower hybrid frequency

The existence of resonance cones in the lower hybrid domain has been verified experimentally by an rf double probe technique. The observations are in good agreement with cold plasma theory. Measurements at small cone angles demonstrate the influence of ion terms, limiting the existence of cones to frequencies above the lower hybrid frequency.     

A simple calculation of the angular distribution of sputtered atoms

Angular distributions of atoms sputtered with fast ions from smooth amorphous targets are estimated by a straightforward treatment of the collision cascade. When the geometrical situation at oblique ion impact is considered, the angle of maximum emission and the sputtering yield in dependence on the angle of ion incidence are described.
