Environmental Radiation Monitoring after the Accidental Release from Bituminization Demonstration Facility

The fire and explosion of the Bituminization Demonstration Facility at PNC Tokai Works were occurred on March 11th, 1997. As soon as the fire occurred, environmental monitoring was started. The influence of accidental release was recognized from some samples of airborne dust and surface soil on site. No influence was recognized from the samples off site except the airborne dust collected at O-arai (20 km south). The official statement by the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan was: "It was less than the value which has an influence on the environment and health."     

An immunosensor for syphilis

An immuno responsive membrane was prepared by immobilizing Wasserman antigen to acetylcellulose. The antigen-binding membrane was used in developing an immunosensor for determining specifically corresponding antibody in serum. The senor is characterized by electrochemical determination of the antigen-antibody complex formed at the membranesoluti on interface. Experimental data on the applicability of the sensor to serology tests for syphilis are given as well as an outline of a possible mechanism for evaluating the electrical potential difference across the antigen-binding membrane.     

Specific heat of K2Pt(CN)4Br0.3 · 3H2O

The anomalous behavior of the specific heat appears around 35 and 65 K. The 65 K-anomaly seems to be related to the ferroelastic softening of c₆₆. At 120 K no anomaly appears not only in the normal sample but also in the dehydrated sample.

This paper reviews industries using arsenic and arsenic compounds such as wood preservatives and agricultural chemicals, the use of arsenic trioxide in glass manufacture, and the applications of metallic arsenic in non-ferrous alloys and of high-purity arsenic in the electronics industry.     

On TVD difference schemes for the three-dimensional Euler equations in general co-ordinates

An improved treatment for the Harten–Yee and Chakravarthy–Osher TVD numerical flux functions in general co-ordinates is presented. The proposed formulation is demonstrated by a series of numerical experiments for three-dimensional flows around the ONERA-M6 wing. The numerical results indicate that it is important to use a suitable artificial compression parameter in order to obtain more accurate solutions around the leading edge of the wing. The two TVD numerical fluxes give excellent results: they capture the shock wave without numerical oscillations, they capture the rapid expansion around the leading edge sharply, they have self-adjusting mechanisms regarding numerical viscosity and they also have robustness.     

Exafs study of bromine-doped polyacetylene

Extended-X-ray-absorption-fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements have been made on the Br K absorption of Br-doped polyacetylene at 300 K. The analysis of the EXAFS data shows that Br-C and Br-Br bonds exist in Br-doped polyacetylene with the ratio nearly independent of Br concentration over its range from 5% to 60%. This result indicates that substitution and/or addition reactions of bromine take place even at the low doping level.
