Complex emulsion inversion pattern associated with the partitioning of nonionic surfactant mixtures in the presence of alcohol cosurfactant

Commercial ethoxylated nonionic surfactant mixtures containing alcohol cosurfactant exhibit a three-phase behavior whose formulation strongly varies with the water/oil ratio. As a consequence, a change in water/oil ratio can result in a sequence of up to three different emulsion inversion processes, through a combination of formulation and composition effects.     

Binary and ternary chromium(III) complexes with cellular reductants and DNA components isolated from redox type systems. Part 1. Chromium(VI)–cysteine–adenine (adenosine,ATP)

The reduction of CrO₃ with an excess of L-cysteine and its interaction with DNA fragments (adenine, adenosine) and ATP nucleotide was studied by analysis of the isolated solid products. The precipitates were characterised by elemental analyses, FAB mass spectral data, spectroscopic methods (u.v.–vis., f.i.r., i.r.) and magnetic measurements. The Cr^III complexes obtained appear to be various Cr^III cysteinate and adenine or ATP (but not adenosine) ternary species of the addition type bound through the hydrogen bonding network.     

Oxidation of Natural and Thermal Denatured Bovine Serum Albumin Hydrazyl Free Radicals in the Presence of Cyclodextrins

The influence of certain thermal treatments on the reactivity of bovine serum albumin (denaturation followed by renaturation in three different cooling conditions) was studied monitoring the kinetics of oxidation of BSA with two water-soluble stable hydrazyl radicals. The results showed that the addition to the reaction mixture of -cyclodextrin and -cyclodextrin decreases the oxidation rate, probably due to the encapsulation of terminal amino acid rests by the cyclodextrins cavity. -Cyclodextrin protects more efficiently the albumin probes than -cyclodextrin. The denatured albumin probes are more reactive than natural albumin as a consequence of the reorienting of the hydrophobic rests of albumin molecule to their surface.     

Spectroscopic characterization of mineral crystals produced by the bacterium Azospirillum brasilense

The results of spectroscopic structural and trace elemental analyses of mineral crystals produced by the soil nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azospirillum brasilense cultivated in a synthetic medium are presented and discussed. The mineral formed is shown to have a structure close to struvite (MgNH(4)PO(4) x 6H(2)O; ASTM file No. 15-762) with some differences which may be attributed to the presence of isomorphic admixtures of other cations (struvite is known to have a variety of forms). AAS/AES and ion chromatography analyses for a number of biologically important microelements and their role in the formation of the crystal structure, as well as some questions related to biomineralization are also discussed.     

About compensation effect by thermal decomposition of some catalyst precursors

Summary In order to obtain catalysts, the thermal decomposition of the precursors is a compulsory step. However, kinetic analysis of the decomposition data obtained under non-isothermal conditions lead very seldom to the intimate reaction mechanism. There is also a lack of information because in non-isothermal kinetics, the compensation effect, is rather a rule and unfortunately a source of debate. In order to discriminate between these processes, and the influence of conversion, respectively temperature on the reaction rate, the NPK (non-parametric kinetic - Sempere and Nomen) method was used. This method is based on the singular value decomposition algorithm (SVD) applied on the matrix of reaction rate at corresponding conversion and temperature. This method allows a less speculative determination of the conversion functions and of the kinetic parameters.     

Synthesis of mixed metal decaosmium carbido clusters: The X-ray structures of the monoanions [Os10C(CO)24Cu(NCMe)]− and [Os10C(CO)24AuPPh3]−

The high nuclearity mixed metal cluster monoanions [Os₁₀C(CO)₂₄Cu(NCMe)]^? (I) and [Os₁₀C(CO)₂₄AuPPh₃]^? (II) have been obtained by reaction of the carbido-dianion [Os₁₀C(CO)₂₄]^2? (III) with one equivalent of [Cu(NCMe)₄] [BF₄] and Ph₃PAuCl, respectively, in CH₂Cl₂. X-ray analysis of the [PPh₃Me]⁺ salts of I and II show that the Cu and Au ligands have added to capping tetrahedra of the dianion III in μ₃- and μ₂-bridging positions, respectively.     

Efficient transesterification/acylation reactions mediated by N-heterocyclic carbene catalysts

Imidazol-2-ylidenes, a family of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC), are efficient catalysts in the transesterification involving numerous esters and alcohols. Low catalyst loadings of aryl- or alkyl-substituted NHC catalysts mediate the acylation of alcohols with enol acetates in short reaction times at room temperature. Commercially available and more difficult to cleave methyl esters react with primary alcohols in the presence of alkyl-substituted NHC to efficiently form the corresponding esters. While primary alcohols are selectively acylated over secondary alcohols with use of enol esters as acylating agents, methyl and ethyl esters can be employed as protective agents for secondary alcohols in the presence of the more active alkyl-substituted NHC catalysts. The NHC-catalyzed transesterification protocol was simplified by generating the imidazol-2-ylidene catalysts in situ.     

A remark on a maximal function over a Cantor set of directions

LetM _e ⁰ be the maximal operator over segments of length 1 with directions belonging to a Cantor set. It has been conjectured that this operator is bounded onL ². We consider a sequence of operators over finite sets of directions converging toM _e ⁰ . We improve the previous estimate for the (L ²,L ²)-norm of these particular operators. We also prove thatM _e ⁰ is bounded from some subsets ofL ² toL ². These subsets are composed of positive functions whose Fourier transforms have a very weak decay or are supported in a vertical strip. Partially supported by Spanish DGICYT grant no. PB90-0187.     

Directional operators and radial functions on the plane

LetEçS ¹ be a set with Minkowski dimensiond(E)1. We consider the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, the Hilbert transform and the maximal Hilbert transform along the directions ofE. The main result of this paper shows that these operators are bounded onL _rad ^p (R²) forp>1+d(E) and unbounded whenp<1+d(E). We also give some end-point results.     

Determination of the partition coefficients of the nonionic detergent C12E7 between lipid-detergent mixed membranes and water by means of Laurdan fluorescence spectroscopy

The membrane-water partition coefficient of the detergent C₁₂E₇ between water and C₁₂E₇/POPC mixed membranes has been determined by means of steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. The emission spectra of the fluorescent probe Laurdan were used as an indicator of membrane composition at different membrane concentrations in the sample. The partition coefficient expressed as the ratio of the mole fractions of the detergent in the membrane and water phases is about 6^*10⁵ at low molar ratios of C₁₂E₇/POPC (R _c ) and decreases rapidly with increasingR _c . The limiting detergent content of the lamellar phase (R _c ^* >0.8) is indicated by a minimum ofP(R _c ).
