In situ characterization of semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors in an operating Yb:KGW mode-locked laser

We report in situ characterization of a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) in an operating Yb:KGW mode-locked laser. The technique may be described as a pump-probe experiment in which the intracavity beam acts as a pump beam while the output of the same laser is used as a test beam for the SESAM reflectivity. At zero delay, the probe pulse overlaps in time with the subsequent intracavity pulse. The method is an alternative to standard pump-probe measurements in situations where the intracavity parameters such as energy fluence onto the SESAM, pulse length, and center wavelength cannot be achieved simultaneously with available lasers.     

Capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of all 93 acyclic octenes and their identification in fluid catalytic cracked gasoline

The Kováts retention indices of all 93 acyclic octenes on polydimethylsiloxane and squalane as stationary phases as well as their mass spectra were measured. The means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used for confirmation of GC identification as well as for mass spectrometric deconvolution of the majority of gas chromatographic unseparated isomeric octene peaks. The distinction between corresponding E and Z acyclic octenes, that is either difficult or even impossible by means of GC-MS, was obtained on the basis of larger temperature coefficients of retention indices for Z isomeric octenes than for corresponding E isomers. The retention data expressed as homomorphy factors were correlated with the degree of branching, position of double bond, and position of alkyl group with respect to the double bond of acyclic octenes, and the structure-retention relationships were formulated. The 81 acyclic octenes were identified in FCC gasoline.     

Photochemical pinacol rearrangements of unsymmetrical diols

The photochemical pinacol reaction of a series of nonsymmetrical 9-fluorenyl-substituted vic-diols was investigated and compared with their acid-catalyzed thermal reaction. Unlike the thermal reaction, the radiation-induced processes involve only fluorenyl cations, as is reflected in differences of product distribution between the two reactions. From the product studies, substituent migratory aptitudes are reversed in the photochemical process, suggesting that kinetic control takes place under neutral conditions unlike the acid-catalyzed thermal reactions. The presence of fluorenyl cation intermediates and their lifetimes were established by laser flash spectroscopy studies.     

Evidence of Ternary Inclusion Complexes Formation Using Factorial Design and Determination of Their Formation Constant

Evidence of the interaction among the [PbAc]⁺ and[PbEDTA]^-2 with the -cyclodextrin (-CD)is shown, using a 2⁴ factorial design. The factors used werethe [Pb(II)], [-CD], [Ac^-] and [EDTA] concentrationsat pH = 6.2. The statistical results indicate that the changes inchemical response for these species are associated to theinteraction among these factors. Spectrophotometric andelectrochemical studies were undertaken to assess the interactions.The equilibrium constants for inclusion complexes were determinedFor -CD-[PbAc]⁺ and -CD-[PbEDTA]^-2.     

Determination of lead and cadmium using a polycyclodextrin-modified carbon paste electrode with anodic stripping voltammetry

This work reports the use of and -cyclodextrin-modified carbon paste electrodes (CPE_-CD and CPE_-CD) to determine simultaneously Pb(II) and Cd(II) by means of the electrochemical technique known as anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). Both modified electrodes displayed good resolution of the oxidation peaks of the said metals. Statistic analysis of the results strongly suggests that the CPE_-CD exhibited a better analytical response that the CPE_-CD, while the detection limits obtained for Pb(II) were 6.3×10^–7 M for the CPE_-CD and 7.14×10^–7 M for the CPE_-CD, whereas for Cd(II) they were 2.51×10^–6 M for the CPE_-CD and 2.03×10^–6 M for the CPE_-CD.     

Influence of Cyclodextrins on the Kinetics of Oxidation of Amino Acids and BSA by Hydrazyl Radicals

The kinetics of oxidation of amino acids (Arg, His, Lys, Phe, Thr and Tyr), a dipeptide (Gly-His), and BSA (bovine serum albumin) by two persistent water soluble free radicals of the hydrazyl type has been studied.The rate decreases in the order Arg>Lys>Tyr>Thr>HisBSAPheGly-His with bothfree radicals. Addition to the reaction mixture of - and -cyclodextrin decreases the oxidation rate, probably due to amino acidencapsulation in the cyclodextrin cavity. -Cyclodextrin protects more efficiently against oxidation than -cyclodextrin.     

Ultrasound-assisted microencapsulation of jackfruit extract in eco-friendly powder particles: characterization and antiproliferative activity

The aim of the article was to develop stable and safe eco-friendly microcapsules and evaluate their physicochemical properties and their efficiency to protect a jackfruit extract. Eco-friendly microcapsules were produced by ultrasound and spray drying using only three safe ingredients: sucrose ester (SE), miglyol and maltodextrin (DE = 10). Some physicochemical properties, particle morphology, FT-IR, differential scanning calorimetry and antiproliferative activity were determined for microcapsules loaded or not with the jackfuit extract. The results revealed that the encapsulation process by spray drying produced stable microcapsules, with adequate physicochemical and fluid properties for a powder product. The cell viability on the proliferation of M12.C3.F6 cell line was not affected by powder microcapsules without jackfruit extract, indicating that capsules are not toxic for these cells. However, microcapsules with jackfruit extract (100 μg/ml) were able to inhibit significantly the proliferation of M12.C3.F6 cells. These microcapsules can be used for the protection of different compounds sensitive to light, oxygen and/or heat and displaying a very low aqueous solubility.     

Long range correlation of hydrophilicity and flexibility along the calcium binding protein chains

Long range correlation concerning hydrophilicity and flexibility along a number of 80 calcium binding protein sequences is confirmed by using spectral analysis and detrended fluctuations analysis methods, as well as by Hurst exponent calculations. There are no significant differences between the correlation properties concerning these properties for the two structural subfamilies, extended and compact, of the calcium binding proteins and they are also similar with the correlation properties revealed by other investigated proteins. This result sustains the hypothesis that the long range correlation of hydrophilicity and flexibility along the chain is a common feature of proteins.     

Catalytic asymmetric hydrosilylation of acetophenone with new chiral thiourea ligands containing the (S)-α-phenylethyl group

New chiral thioureas 1–8 containing 1,2-ethylendiamine or trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane as the carbon skeleton, and containing an (S)-α-phenylethyl group have been prepared (79–98% yield). Thioureas 1–8 were used as ligands for the zinc-based catalyzed asymmetric hydrosilylation of acetophenone with polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS). The best result was achieved with monothiourea 1 (up to 75% ee), in toluene and a catalyst load of 5 mol %.
