Discovery and frequency measurement of short-wavelength far-infrared laser emissions from optically pumped <Superscript>13</Superscript>CD<Subscript>3</Subscript>OH and CHD<Subscript>2</Subscript>OH

A three-laser heterodyne system was used to measure the frequencies of twelve previously observed far-infrared laser emissions from the partially deuterated methanol isotopologues ¹³CD₃OH and CHD₂OH. Two laser emissions, a 53.773 μm line from ¹³CD₃OH and a 74.939 μm line from CHD₂OH, have also been discovered and frequency measured. The CO₂ pump laser offset frequency was measured with respect to its center frequency for twenty-four FIR laser emissions from CH₃OH, ¹³CD₃OH and CHD₂OH. PACS 07.57.Hm; 42.55.Lt; 42.62.Eh     

Critical points in the Bragg glass phase of a weakly pinned crystal of Ca3Rh4Sn13

New experimental data are presented on the scan rate dependence of the magnetization hysteresis width ΔM(H) (∞ critical current densityJ _c(H)) in isothermalMH scans in a weakly pinned single crystal of Ca₃Rh₄Sn₁₃, which displays second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly as distinct from the peak effect (PE). We observe an interesting modulation in the field dependence of a parameter which purports to measure the dynamical annealing of the disordered bundles of vortices injected through the sample edges towards the destined equilibrium vortex state at a givenH. These data, in conjunction with the earlier observations made while studying the thermomagnetic history dependence inJ _c(H) in the tracing of the minor hysteresis loops, imply that the partially disordered state heals towards the more ordered state between the peak field of the SMP anomaly and the onset field of the PE. The vortex phase diagram in the given crystal of Ca₃Rh₄Sn₁₃ has been updated in the context of the notion of the phase coexistence of the ordered and disordered regions between the onset field of the SMP anomaly and the spinodal line located just prior to the irreversibility line. A multi-critical point and a critical point in the (H,T) region of the Bragg glass phase have been marked in this phase diagram and the observed behavior is discussed in the light of recent data on multi-critical point in the vortex phase diagram in a single crystal of Nb.     

Effect of γ-ray irradiation on the magnetic properties of NdFeB and Fe–Cr–Co permanent magnets

The effect of γ-ray irradiation on the magnetic properties of NdFeB and Fe–Cr–Co permanent magnets has been investigated. The magnetic flux loss of two kinds of magnets before and after irradiation was measured. Results show that the effect of γ-ray irradiation on the magnetic properties of sintered NdFeB is not so obvious as that on Fe–Cr–Co magnet. Irradiation-induced damage from γ-ray for the Fe–Cr–Co magnets was characterized for the first time. The decline of permanent magnetic properties of Fe–Cr–Co magnet induced by γ-ray irradiation is reversible except for the maximum energy product (BH)_max. The difference of coercivity mechanism between these two kinds of permanent magnets is responsible for the different dependence of magnetic properties loss induced by γ-ray irradiation.     

On the concentration and determination of plutonium in natural waters by adsorption on MnO2 filters

A new method of analysis of the efficiency of four filters of MnO₂ in series which takes into account the reactions induced in plutonium by the sorbent is described. The system of differential equations describing the behaviour of plutonium in water as it passes through the filters is solved and the parameters of the filters are determined for a best fitting of the solutions corresponding to the experimental uncertainties. The method is checked by numerical simulation and then applied to water solutions with a known plutonium concentration and to some experimental results given by other authors. In all occassions the results are consistent with the possibility of determining the contents of plutonium in sea and continental waters with uncertainties of the order of 10%.     

Reactions on the dimethylphenylbenzacridinones. VI. Hydrogenation of ortho-nitrophenyl derivatives

Catalytic hydrogenation of o-nitrophenylbenz[a], benz[c], dibenz[a,h] and dibenz[a,g]acridinones using Pd/C as catalyst, at 60 psi of pressure, gave the hiterto unknown benzoquinoacridine N-oxides and benzo-pyranonaphthyridine N-oxides. The structure of all products was corroborated by ir, ¹H- and ¹³C-nmr and mass spectra data.     

A transportable gamma spectroscopy system applied to the measurement of fission products

Normally, gamma-ray spectroscopy is performed by equipment positioned in the SLOWPOKE-2 Facility at the Royal Military College; however, there have occasionally been requirements for analyses externally. A transportable gamma spectroscopy system was thus assembled by acquiring a commercially available multichannel analyzer, analysis program and detector, and by designing and constructing a transportable shielding castle. It was then used to take measurements of fission product concentrations at several research reactors.     

Particularities of the dose distribution in irradiated plastic tubing

This paper presents the results of an experimental study undertaken on the irradiation process of polyethylene tubing in an electron beam. Isodoses of distribution through material thickness in case of irradiation in one or two irradiation directions have been analyzed.
