We study heights of subspaces of D

where D is a finite-dimensional rational division algebra and N a positive integer. We define them in terms of volumes of Euclidean lattices by extending a formula of W. Schmidt so that
we recover the classical height if D is commutative. We review basic properties, prove a Siegel Lemma over D, a duality theorem and a new formula for the degree of certain abelian varieties. We further give matrix versions and compare
our notion with the height defined through algebraic groups by J. Franke, Y. Manin and Y. Tschinkel.

Covalent grafting of biomolecules could potentially improve the biocompatibility of materials. However, these molecules have to be grafted in an active conformation to play their biological roles. The present work aims at verifying if the surface conjugation scheme of fibronectin (FN) affects the protein orientation/conformation and activity. FN was grafted onto plasma-treated fused silica using two different crosslinkers, glutaric anhydride (GA) or sulfosuccinimidyl 4-(p-maleimidophenyl)butyrate (SMPB). Fused silica was chosen as a model surface material because it presents a roughness well below the dimensions of FN, therefore allowing AFM analyses with appropriate depth resolution. Cell adhesion assays were performed to evaluate the bioactivity of grafted FN. Cell adhesion was found to be higher on GA-FN than on SMPB-FN. Since FN-radiolabeling assays allowed us to rule out a surface concentration effect (approximately 80 ng/cm2 of FN on both crosslinkers), it was hypothesized that FN adopted a more active conformation when grafted via GA. In this context, the FN conformation on both crosslinkers was investigated through AFM and contact angle analyses. Before FN grafting, GA- and SMPB-modified surfaces had a similar water contact angle, topography, and roughness. However, water contact angles of GA-FN and SMPB-FN surfaces clearly show differences in surface hydrophilicity, therefore indicating a dependence of protein organization toward the conjugation strategy. Furthermore, AFM results demonstrated that surface topography and roughness of both FN-conjugated surfaces were significantly different. Distribution analysis of FN height and diameter confirmed this observation as the protein dimensions were significantly larger on GA than SMPB. This study confirmed that the covalent immobilization scheme of biomolecules influences their conformation and, hence, their activity. Consequently, selecting the appropriate conjugation strategy is of paramount importance in retaining molecule bioactivity. 相似文献

If the angular length of the circular arc is h, a parametric polynomial curve of arbitrary degree \(n \in {\mathbb{N}}\) , which interpolates given arc at a particular point, can be constructed with radial distance bounded by h 2n . To elucidate the origin of antibacterial activity of ZnO nanoparticles, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) mechanism is systematically investigated based on electronic and protonic conductions. While the enhancement of antibacterial activity by an increase in electronic conductivity is marginal, an apparent improvement is observed by in the increase of protonic conductivity in terms of the surface basicity. This study first demonstrates that antibacterial activity can be enhanced by controlling the surface basicity of solid particles. The basicity of ZnO can be modulated by doping alkaline‐earth oxides such as MgO and CaO, and it results in the increase of hydroxyl defects on the surface of solid particles. The basicity shows a strong dependency on mobile OH concentrations. The increase of ROS hydroxyl radicals is confirmed by Mg (ZMO) or Ca‐doping (ZCO), which shows high antibacterial activity, and Ca‐doped ZnO exhibits the highest performance. It is clearly observed that the antibacterial activity is proportional to the basicity, which is controlled by the mobile OH formation. While both electrons and hydroxyl species are required for ROS reactions, it is concluded that the formation of hydroxyl species is a key factor in improving the antibacterial activity in ZnO. 相似文献

Time-resolved femtosecond multicolor absorption spectroscopy of silver nanoparticle (NP) colloids with particle diameter in range of 10–30 nm is presented. The amplified femtosecond excitation of the surface plasmon resonance band resulted in transient absorption spectra reflecting the electron-phonon relaxation dynamics, which takes place on the early picosecond time scale. The monitored band with enhanced absorption in the 490–540 nm spectral range exhibited red-shift with increasing pump fluency from 0.4 mJ/cm2 to the 1.5 mJ/cm2 level. The growth of the relaxation time with increasing pump fluency reveals the temperature dependent relaxation dynamics caused by the nanometer sized electron confinement in the case of silver. This effect was confirmed also by identification of the relaxation time dependence on the particle diameter at constant pump fluency. The complex experimental results revealed nonlinearities both in the laser excitation and electron relaxation processes. 相似文献

Objective and motivation
Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) allows in vivo invasive intra-luminal real-time examination of the arterial wall structure. In this study, we aimed to validate for the first time the in vivo IVUS performing as a diagnostic tool by comparison to the well-established histomorphometry approach, in the largely used rat model of carotid angioplasty model that mimics the angioplasty procedure in humans.Methods
Atherosclerotic lesions were allowed to develop during four weeks after balloon catheter inflation of the left carotid artery, whereas the intact right carotid artery was used as control. Four weeks after injury, a Boston Scientific 40 MHz device to perform IVUS exams in vivo on both carotid arteries. Then, both carotid arteries were examined in vitro by histomorphometry and correlation between IVUS and histomorphometric parameters (plaque plus media cross-sectional areas [CSA] and eccentricity index) were researched.Results
After ANOVA analysis, comparative statistical analysis showed significant correlations between IVUS and histomorphometry when examining the intact right carotid artery (r = 0.662 with p < 0.003 for plaque plus media CSA; r = 0.774 with p < 0.002 for eccentricity index), but also when exploring the injured left carotid artery (r = 0.805 with p < 0.0001 for plaque plus media CSA; r = 0.775 with p < 0.002 for eccentricity index).Conclusions and outcome
We report here for the first time the ability of IVUS to study therapeutic vascular effects in vivo in alive rats. This result is of major importance since it will allow this device to be used for restenosis drug testing in rat model of carotid angioplasty. 相似文献138.

Treatment of Ln(NO3)3?nH2O with 1 or 2 equiv 2,2′‐bipyrimidine (BPM) in dry THF readily afforded the monometallic complexes [Ln(NO3)3(bpm)2] (Ln=Eu, Gd, Dy, Tm) or [Ln(NO3)3(bpm)2]?THF (Ln=Eu, Tb, Er, Yb) after recrystallization from MeOH or THF, respectively. Reactions with nitrate salts of the larger lanthanide ions (Ln=Ce, Nd, Sm) yielded one of two distinct monometallic complexes, depending on the recrystallization solvent: [Ln(NO3)3(bpm)2]?THF (Ln=Nd, Sm) from THF, or [Ln(NO3)3(bpm)(MeOH)2]?MeOH (Ln=Ce, Nd, Sm) from MeOH. Treatment of UO2(NO3)2?6H2O with 1 equiv BPM in THF afforded the monoadduct [UO2(NO3)2(bpm)] after recrystallization from MeOH. The complexes were characterized by their crystal structure. Solid‐state luminescence measurements on these monometallic complexes showed that BPM is an efficient sensitizer of the luminescence of both the lanthanide and the uranyl ions emitting visible light, as well as of the YbIII ion emitting in the near‐IR. For Tb, Dy, Eu, and Yb complexes, energy transfer was quite efficient, resulting in quantum yields of 80.0, 5.1, 70.0, and 0.8 %, respectively.
