Measurement of N-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide in urine by high performance liquid chromatography

We have previously described a simple and reproducible method for the measurement of nicotinamide and its major metabolite N-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide (2-pyr) in human plasma. We now describe a low-cost high-throughput method for measurement of urinary 2-pyr, and demonstrate that Isolute C18 bulk can replace use of the column to clean up the samples prior to injection into the HPLC apparatus. Using a standard curve together with an internal standard for each sample, with mean recovery of 2-pyr greater than 95%, the assay has proved reproducible, with considerable savings in cost and time. The principal advantages of this method are the rapid column clean up of samples prior to injection and the simple but effective methodology.     

Pyrrolic and polypyrrolic anion binding agents

This review traces the emergence of pyrrole-based receptors for anion recognition. It outlines how serendipitous findings that the diprotonated form of sapphyrin, a pentapyrrolic expanded porphyrin, formed a centrally-bound complex with fluoride anion made over a decade ago spawned studies of this and other expanded porphyrins as receptors, carriers, and sensors of anions. Further evolutions of the field, including in particular the finding that neutral, non-aromatic oligopyrrole macrocycles, such as the calixpyrroles and calixphyrins, can act as cheap, and easy-to-prepare anion receptors will also be highlighted, as will recent work with acyclic systems, including dipyrrolylquinoxalines (DPQs) and simple derivatives of pyrrole itself.     

Anion coordination and anion-templated assembly: Highlights from 2002 to 2004

This review article highlights advances made in abiotic anion coordination chemistry from 2002 to 2004. The structure of this review is that similar to the previous reviews in this series that covered 1997–2001 [P.A. Gale, Coord. Chem. Rev. 199 (2000) 181; P.A. Gale, Coord. Chem. Rev. 213 (2001) 79; P.A. Gale, Coord. Chem. Rev. 240 (2003) 191]. The first section examines anion receptors that do not contain metal ions. This is followed by a review of metal containing anion receptors and finally the role of anions in directing the self-assembly of complex molecular architectures are presented in the final section.

We have developed a new technique, which is complementary to other procedures, that will have wide applicability for generating new feasible framework structures with defined microporous architectures from the knowledge of only the unit cell dimensions, constituent elements and by defining forbidden regions within the unit cell.
