The effects of flame treatment of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) on the work of adhesion (W) and energy release rate (G) were assessed by a custom-built adhesion testing device (ATD). The contact area and the vertical displacement between planar LDPE films and PDMS lenses (untreated and UV/ozone treated) were varied as a function of the applied load, P. The adhesion and pull-off forces between the extracted PDMS lenses and the LDPE films were studied as a function of the duration of the flame treatment expressed in treatment numbers. A fracture mechanics approach was used to relate the applied load and the radius of the contact area to the energy release rate (G). The difference between the energy release rate and the thermodynamic work of adhesion, defined as the adhesion hysteresis (G - W), increased systematically with increasing treatment numbers for both lens types. In addition, the adhesion hysteresis appeared to be dependent on the contact time. Finally, the origin of the adhesion hysteresis was discussed. It was concluded that bonding by surface functional groups may be the dominating mechanisms for the changes in the observed hysteresis. 相似文献

Summary: Progress in the development of a redox‐driven macromolecular motor and the characterization of its redox‐mechanical cycle using electrochemical AFM‐based single‐molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) is described. The elasticities of individual neutral and oxidized poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane) (PFS) macromolecules were reversibly controlled in situ by adjusting the potential in electrochemical SMFS experiments. For the operating cycle of one individual PFS‐based molecular motor, an output of 3.4 × 10−19 J and an efficiency of 5% have been estimated.

The synthesis of surface-confined, nanometer-sized dendrimers and Au nanoparticles was performed starting from single Pd(II) pincer adsorbate molecules (10) embedded as isolated species into 11-mercapto-1-undecanol and decanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. The coordination of monolayer-protected Au nanoclusters (MPCs) bearing phosphine moieties at the periphery (13), or dendritic wedges (8) having a phosphine group at the focal point, to SAMs containing individual Pd(II) pincer molecules was monitored by tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM AFM). The individual Pd(II) pincer molecules embedded in the decanethiol SAM were visualized by their coordination to phosphine MPCs 13; isolated objects with a height of 3.5 +/- 0.7 nm were observed by TM AFM. Reaction of these embedded Pd(II) pincer molecules with the dendritic wedge 8 yielded individual molecules with a height of 4.3 +/- 0.2 nm. 相似文献

The synthesis of a rapidly forming redox responsive poly(ferrocenylsilane)‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PFS‐PEG)‐based hydrogel is described, achieved by a thiol‐Michael addition click reaction. PFS bearing acrylate side groups (PFS‐acryl) was synthesized by side group modification of poly(ferrocenyl(3‐iodopropyl)methylsilane) (PFS‐I) and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FT‐IR spectroscopy. The equilibrium swelling ratio, morphology, rheology, and redox responsive properties of the PFS‐PEG‐based hydrogel are reported.

A commercial atomic force microscope (AFM) outfitted with a custom control and data acquisition system was used to investigate the adhesive nature of a viscoelastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) network. Due to the complex dependence of the adhesion of this sample on factors such as indentation, surface dwell time, applied stress and sample memory effects, total control of the applied stress profile between the AFM tip and sample was necessary. Since the force curves were analyzed automatically on‐line, large amounts of data could be rapidly collected, alleviating the time‐consuming task of off‐line analysis. The adhesive response is shown to increase with increasing interaction time and the maximum applied load. The results are rationalized by considering the time‐dependent stress relaxation behavior of the PDMS network as it is deformed by the AFM tip. 相似文献

The micro phase separated nanoscale morphology of phase separated polyurethanes (PUs) was visualized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) height and phase imaging of smooth surfaces obtained by ultramicrotonomy. PUs were obtained from 4,4′-methylenbis (phenyl isocyanate) (MDI), 1,4-butanediol (BD) and poly(tetrahydrofurane) polyether polyol (PTHF). The segmented polyether PUs with varying stoichiometric ratio of the isocyanate and hydroxyl groups were prepared to investigate the effect of molar mass, as well as the type and number of end-groups on their morphology and mechanical performance. The PU samples studied show characteristic “fingerprint” AFM phase images. Novel dynamic imaging modes of AFM, including HarmoniX material mapping and Peak Force Tapping were used to assess the mechanical performance of phase separated polyurethanes quantitatively as a function of their molecular structure. The values of surface elastic moduli were determined with nanoscale resolution and were in excellent agreement for both AFM modes. While tensile testing provides a bulk average value for the elastic modulus of the elastomers, the novel AFM based elastic moduli mappings introduced enable the study of surface stiffness with nanoscale resolution in a quantitative way. 相似文献

The effect of confinement on the kinetics of the surface hydrolysis of polystyrene-block-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PS(n)-b-PtBA(m)) thin films on oxidized silicon substrates in 3 M aqueous hydrochloric acid was systematically investigated. As shown by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurements, a skin layer of acid-sensitive PtBA is present on the surface of PS(n)-b-PtBA(m) films, consistent with the lower surface tension of PtBA compared to that of PS. The thickness of the skin layer was determined by angle-dependent XPS as approximately 8 nm for PS(690)-b-PtBA(1210). Tapping mode atomic force microscopy showed an increasing surface coverage of swollen poly(acrylic acid)-rich globules with increasing hydrolysis time. Using ex situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the reaction kinetics was determined quantitatively as a function of temperature, polymer film thickness, thermal pretreatment of the films, and block copolymer composition. The initial stages of the hydrolysis can be described as a pseudo-first-order reaction under all conditions investigated. The corresponding rate constants were found to be 2 orders of magnitude lower than those reported for the hydrolysis of tert-butyl acetate in solution and depended linearly on the fraction of PtBA exposed at the surface. However, the polymer film thickness, thermal pretreatment of the films, block copolymer composition, and local composition did not affect the rate constants. The negative value of the activation entropy (DeltaS(298)++ = -103 J/mol K), determined according to the Arrhenius equation and transition state theory, indicates that the tightness of the transition state is more pronounced in the PS(n)-b-PtBA(m) film compared to reactions in solution. Thus, the spatial constraints due to the incorporation of the reactive ester groups in thin polymer films are responsible for the observed reduced reactivity. 相似文献
