Inquiry‐focused professional development and conceptions of inquiry held by eight professional development leaders were investigated within the context of a state science teacher conference. The prominent session format involved session leaders modeling classroom experiences. In all sessions, classroom inquiry was portrayed as a teacher‐guided activity with the primary goal being to increase motivation for engaging students in classroom inquiry. The leaders’ conceptualized inquiry primarily as a teaching approach with various goals, characteristics, and potential barriers. The findings of this study provide evidence of how inquiry, a prominent feature of science education reform, was portrayed in sessions at a conference sponsored by a state affiliate of the National Science Teachers Association and thought about by persons who led these sessions. The findings have implications for teacher learning from conference‐based professional development and its potential influence on science teacher thinking and practice. 相似文献

Phytoestrogens occur naturally in plants and are structurally similar to mammalian estrogens. The lignans are a class of phytoestrogen and can be metabolized to the biologically active enterolignans, enterodiol, and enterolactone by a consortium of intestinal bacteria. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a plant lignan, is metabolized to enterodiol and, subsequently, enterolactone. Matairesinol, another plant lignan, is metabolized to enterolactone. Other dietary enterolignan precursors include lariciresinol, pinoresinol, syringaresinol, arctigenin, and sesamin. Enterolignan exposure is determined in part by intake of these precursors, gut bacterial activity, and host conjugating enzyme activity. A single SDG dose results in enterolignan appearance in plasma 8-10 h later--a timeframe associated with colonic bacterial metabolism and absorption. Conjugation of enterolignans with sulfate and glucuronic acid occurs in the intestinal wall and liver, with the predominant conjugates being glucuronides. Controlled feeding studies have demonstrated dose-dependent urinary lignan excretion in response to flaxseed consumption (a source of SDG); however, even in the context of controlled studies, there is substantial interindividual variation in plasma concentrations and urinary excretion of enterolignans. The complex interaction between colonic environment and external and internal factors that modulate it likely contribute to this variation. Knowledge of this field, to date, indicates that understanding the sources of variation and measuring the relevant panel of compounds are important in order to use these measures effectively in evaluating the impact of lignans on human health. 相似文献

Scalar multidimensionally consistent quadrilateral lattice equations are studied. We explore a confluence between the superposition principle for solutions related by the Bäcklund transformation, and the method of solving a Riccati map by exploiting two known particular solutions. This leads to an expression for the N-soliton-type solutions of a generic equation within this class. In this paper, the effects of a magnetic field on natural convection flow in filled long enclosures with Cu/water nanofluid have been analyzed by lattice Boltzmann method. This study has been carried out for the pertinent parameters in the following ranges: the Rayleigh number of base fluid, Ra = 103–105, the volumetric fraction of nanoparticles between 0 and 6 %, the aspect ratio of the enclosure between A = 0.5 and 2. The Hartmann number has been varied from Ha = 0 to 90 with interval 30 while the magnetic field is considered at inclination angles of θ = 0°, 30°, 60° and 90°. Results show that the heat transfer decreases by the increment of Hartmann number for various Rayleigh numbers and the aspect ratios. Heat transfer decreases with the growth of the aspect ratio but this growth causes the effect of the nanoparticles to increase. The magnetic field augments the effect of the nanoparticles at high Rayleigh numbers (Ra = 105). The effect of the nanoparticles rises for high Hartmann numbers when the aspect ratio increases. The rise in the magnetic field inclination improves heat transfer at aspect ratio of A = 0.5. 相似文献

We report the investigations of spin wave modes of arrays of Ni and Co nanorods using Brillouin light scattering. We have revealed the significant influence of spin wave modes along the nanorod axis in contrast to infinite magnetic nanowires. Unusual optical properties featuring an inverted Stokes/anti-Stokes asymmetry of the Brillouin scattering spectra have been observed. The spectrum of spin wave modes in the nanorod array has been calculated and compared with the experiment. Experimental observations are explained in terms of a combined numerical–analytical approach taking into account both the low aspect ratio of individual magnetic nanorods and dipolar magnetic coupling between the nanorods in the array. The optical studies of spin-wave modes in nanorod metamaterials with low aspect ratio nanorods have revealed new magnetic and magneto-optical properties compared to continuous magnetic films or infinite magnetic nanowires. Such magnetic artificial materials are important class of active metamaterials needed for prospective data storage and signal processing applications. 相似文献

A recently developed carbon material, electrospun Activated Carbon nanoFiber (ACnF), exhibits strong potential for use as an adsorbent for toxic industrial chemicals (TICs). As-prepared ACnF contains as much as 9.6?wt% nitrogen, creating a basic surface that enhances acid-gas adsorption. ACnF shows 4–20 times greater HCN adsorption capacities and 2–5 times greater SO2 adsorption capacities in dry nitrogen, compared to commercially available activated carbon fiber cloth (ACFC) and Calgon BPL? granular activated carbon, which are considered here as reference adsorbents. ACnF has 50?% of the micropore volume (0.30?cm3/g) of these reference adsorbents, which limits its adsorption capacity at high concentrations for volatile organic compounds (>500?ppmv). However, at low concentrations (<500?ppmv), ACnF has a similar capacity to ACFC and about three times the VOC adsorption capacity of Calgon BPL?. ACnF’s small fiber diameters (0.2–1.5?μm) allow for higher mass transfer coefficients, resulting in adsorption kinetics nearly twice as fast as ACFC and eight times as fast as Calgon BPL?. ACnF drawbacks include hydrophilicity and reduced structural strength. The rapid adsorption kinetics and high capacity for acidic TICs warrant further investigation of ACnF as an adsorbent in respiratory protection and indoor air quality applications. 相似文献

A powerful approximate method for modeling the flow performance of perforated completions under steady-state conditions has
been developed. The method is based on the representation of the perforation tunnels surrounding a wellbore by the equivalent
elongated ellipsoids. This makes possible an analytical treatment of a 3D problem of steady-state flow in a porous medium
with complex multiple production surfaces. The solution is obtained for a vertical wellbore fully penetrating through a horizontal
formation in the presence of permeability anisotropy. The perforations are oriented horizontally, arranged in almost arbitrary
patterns, repeating along the wellbore, and may have different lengths and shapes. The hydraulic resistances of perforations
flowing inside them as well as the crushed zones around them with impaired permeability are neglected. The approximate solution
found was verified by comparing the previous analytical/numerical solutions for a small number of perforations. This approach
allows one to determine the local skin or the effective wellbore radius for any perforated interval, which can then be integrated
into the conventional calculations of well productivity and used for the perforating gun selection during perforation job

In this note, we consider the steady-state probability of delay (PW) in the C2/G/1 queue and the steady-state probability of loss (ploss) in the C2/G/1 loss system, in both of which the interarrival time has a two-phase Coxian distribution. We show that, for cX
2<1, where cX is the coefficient of variation of the interarrival time, both ploss and PW are increasing in β(s), the Laplace–Stieltjes transform of the general service-time distribution. This generalises
earlier results for the GE2/G/1 queue and the GE2/G/1 loss system. The practical significance of this is that, for cX
2<1, ploss in the C2/G/1 loss system and PW in the C2/G/1 queue are both increasing in the variability of the service time.
