Lyapunov’s direct method in estimates of topological entropy

An upper estimate for the topological entropy of a dynamical system defined by a system of ODE is obtained. The estimate involves the Lyapunov functions and Losinskii’s logarithmic norm. The proof uses the known fact that the topological entropy of a mapping acting in a compact space K can be estimated via the fractal dimension of K. Bibliography: 28 titles. QCD corrections to the forward-backward asymmetries of c and b quarks at the Z pole

Measurements of the forward-backward production asymmetry of heavy quarks in Z decays provide a precise determination of . The asymmetries are sensitive to QCD effects, in particular hard gluon radiation. In this paper QCD corrections for and are discussed. The interplay between the experimental techniques used to measure the asymmetries and the QCD effects is investigated using simulated events. A procedure to estimate the correction needed for experimental measurements is proposed, and some specific examples are given. Received: 26 February 1998 / Published online: 2 June 1998     

One-loop divergences of linear gravity with torsion terms

We investigate the role of the torsion field at the quantum level. One-loop counterterms are calculated in the theory with terms quadratic in the torsion field. We have shown that the theory is finite at the one-loop level.

Moisture sorption, transport, and hydrolytic degradation in polylactide

Management of moisture penetration and hydrolytic degradation of polylactide (PLA) is extremely important during the manufacturing, shipping, storage, and end-use of PLA products. Moisture transport, crystallization, and degradation, in PLA have been measured through a variety of experimental techniques including size-exclusion chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. Quartz crystal microbalance and dynamic vapor sorption experiments have also been used to measure moisture sorption isotherms in PLA films with varying crystallinity. A surprising result is that, within the accuracy of the experiments, crystalline and amorphous PLA films exhibit identical sorption isotherms.     

Methods of constructing optimal stabilizers

The problem of transforming a linear dynamical system in the neighbourhood of a state of equilibrium [1,2] is solved using the special problem of the damping of the system by controls of minimum intensity after a finite time interval. The possibility of using other problems of optimal control is discussed. The main attention is devoted to constructing algorithms of the operation of a device (a stabilizer) which is able, in real time, to generate a stabilizing control circulating in the closed optimal system when unknown perturbations operate constantly [3, 4]. The proposed method is based on the constructive theory of optimal control [5, 6]. Another form of this theory for solving the problem of stabilization is presented in [7](see also [8]).
