Oxidation of olefins with alkanesulfoperacids

Alkanesulfonic peracids RSO₄H effectively oxidize olefins to the corresponding epoxides. The kinetics and mechanism of this reaction are studied. It was shown that both the monomer and dimer form of the peracid act as oxidizing agents. The dependence of the weight constant of the reaction of monomer RSO₄H with substituted acyclic olefins on the structure of the latter is described by the Taft equation. A linear correlation is established between log k₂ and the inductive constants of the substituents on the oxygen atom in the peracid.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 2, pp. 333–337, February, 1991.     

Cylindrical solitons in a Gödel Universe and their stability

Exact cylindrically symmetric solutions are obtained for a class of interacting scalar and vector fields in a rotating Godel Universe. We select those with the properties of solitons with smooth decrease of the fields to asymptotics and those with sharp boundaries (droplets). Excitation of middle-IR range hollow metallic waveguides

The results of the efficiency of low-mode excitation of a parallel-plate hollow metallic waveguides (HMW) as a function of beam and waveguide parameters are represented. Coupling of two waveguides is also discussed.     

151Eu Mössbauer studies on Eu1+x Ba2−x Cu3O7+δ oxide systems

Mössbauer parameters of¹⁵¹Eu in Eu_1+x Ba_2?x Cu₃O_7+δ have been studied as a function of temperature, forx=0.15 andx=0.25. The areas of the absorption spectra for the two samples are almost equal. This could mean that thef-Mössbauer factor for¹⁵¹Eu at the barium sites is much smaller than that for¹⁵¹Eu at the rare earth sites, i.e. we only observe the spectra of the latter sites. According to this, the fits of the spectra with a single quadrupolar pattern and with two quadrupolar patterns have given equivalent χ² values.     

Theoretical temperature-electric field phase diagram for deuterated thiourea SC(ND2)2

A theoretical temperature-electric field phase diagram is constructed for thiourea SC(ND₂)₂ using a phenomenological approach based on the representation of the thermodynamic potentials for all phases. An estimate of the decomposition stability of the Poisson distribution into identical components

An estimate of the decomposition stability of the Poisson distribution is obtained under the condition that the components are identical. The estimate is much sharper than that in the general case. Synthesis and properties of polyethersulphone–polydimethyisiloxane block copolymers

High molecular weight alternating block copolymers of polyethesulphone (PES) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were prepared by the condensation of dimethylamino-terminated PDMS oligomers and hydroxy-terminated PES oligomers in 1,2-dichlorobenzene. Microphase separation of the block copolymers at exceptionally short block lengths was observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Si? O? C intersegment linkage in these materials appeared to display poor hydrolytic stability which is contrary to results obtained for other block copolymers.     

Fluorides of ruthenium and chromium: Theoretical studies

The electronic and structural characteristics of CrF₅, CrF₄, RuF₅ and RuF₄ were studied. Ab initio (SCF-CI) calculations were performed with different structures and spin states for each complex. The favored conformation always corresponds to the highest multiplicity: doublet for CrF₅ in D_3h, triplet for CrF₄ in T_d, quadruplet for RuF₅ in C_4v and quintuplet for RuF₄ in D_4h symmetry.     

Effect of high pressures on the mechanical and electrical properties of barium chalcogenides

In this work, on the basis of a semiempirical model of bonding forces that allows for three-particle interaction and uses the pseudopotential method, the mechanical and electrical properties of barium chalcogenides are studied at hydrostatic pressure. Equations of state are formulated from hydrostatic compression, parameters of the type B1–B2 structural phase transitions are calculated, the change in the energy band spectrum under the influence of the pressures is studied, and an estimate is made of the critical amount of compression that induces a dielectric-metal phase transition. Biomagnetic measurements utilising a superparamagnetic marker: a feasibility study

Summary A preliminary study is here reported on a new potential marker for biomagnetic measurements. The marker consists of superparamagnetic polymer microspheres which were detected in the presence of external steady magnetic fields by means of an r.f.-SQUID magnetometer. The particles were prepared in samples differing in the concentration value and immersed in a homogeneous magnetic field of variable intensity. A simple model was taken into account for the distribution of the microspheres in the samples, so that the theoretical values were compared to the marker field values measured by the biomagnetic sensor. The overall sensitivity of the experimental apparatus and the minimum concentration value of the marker were then estimated.
