Standard ODE methods such as linear multistep methods encounter difficulties when applied to differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) of index greater than 1. In particular, previous results for index 2 DAEs have practically ruled out the use of all explicit methods and of implicit multistep methods other than backward difference formulas (BDFs) because of stability considerations. In this paper we embed known results for semi-explicit index 1 and 2 DAEs in a more comprehensive theory based on compound multistep and one-leg discretizations. This explains and characterizes the necessary requirements that a method must fulfill in order to be applicable to semi-explicit DAEs. Thus we conclude that the most useful discretizations are those that avoid discretization of the constraint. In this paper, by using elementary analysis, we establish some new Lyapunov-type inequalities for nonlinear systems of differential equations, special cases of which contain the well-known equations such as Emden-Fowler-type and half-linear equations. Linear mixed 0–1 integer programming problems may be reformulated as equivalent continuous bilevel linear programming (BLP)
problems. We exploit these equivalences to transpose the concept of mixed 0–1 Gomory cuts to BLP. The first phase of our new
algorithm generates Gomory-like cuts. The second phase consists of a branch-and-bound procedure to ensure finite termination
with a global optimal solution. Different features of the algorithm, in particular, the cut selection and branching criteria
are studied in details. We propose also a set of algorithmic tests and procedures to improve the method. Finally, we illustrate
the performance through numerical experiments. Our algorithm outperforms pure branch-and-bound when tested on a series of
randomly generated problems.

Nowadays, there is high demand for sensitive gas sensors both for human and environmental monitoring. This paper deals with a high-resolution (0.2 ppb) laser-based photoacoustic spectroscopic system realized at ENEA Frascati, Italy, applied for monitoring stress in scuba divers during sustained immersion by analyzing breath samples. Fabry-Perot resonators have long been advocated to improve the limited contrast ratio of multiple quantum well optical modulators used in photonic switches based on self electrooptic effect devices (SEEDs) and in other array based optical interconnection schemes. Using data on field dependent GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well absorption and refraction, we have modelled the reflectivity, modulation depth and contrast ratio of resonant modulators. Our results are generally valid for any quantum well modulator and demonstrate 23the important role played by electro-refraction even in regions of strong absorption. Resonators give large contrast ratios but there are trade-offs in the maximum reflectivity change achievable with Fabry-Perot resonators compared to simple modulators. The model gives the optimum number of quantum wells and reflectivity values required to make a resonator at any wavelength for a given quantum well structure. Understanding the limits of Fabry-Perot quantum well modulator performance is important for their application in symmetric self electrooptic effectiveness for photonic switching where modulation and detection properties are both used and for optical interconnection systems. 相似文献

An instrument is described that can be used to monitor, with unprecedented sensitivity, changes in the optical reflectivity due to crystailine damage incurred during ion implantation. It is shown that at the shot-noise limit, changes in the optical reflectivity of silicon as small as 5·10–7 can be measured in a 10 Hz bandwidth with a signal-to-noise ratio of 100, corresponding to an extrapolated uniform implantation dose of 5·108 cm–2 for 11B+ at 50 keV in silicon. 相似文献
