New Ln[B6O9(OH)3] borates (Ln = Sm-Lu): Structure, properties, and structural relation to cationic Li4[B7O12]Cl conductors (Li-Boracites)

Crystals of new rare earth borates of the composition Ln[B₆O₉ (OH)₃] (Ln = Sm-Lu), sp. gr. R3c are synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Their crystal structures are determined on single crystals with Ln = Ho, Gd without preliminary determination of their chemical formulas. The polar anionic framework of the crystals consists of BO₃ triangles and BO₄ tetrahedra and has wide channels along the threefold axis of the structure, which are similar to the channels along the a, b, and c axes in cubic Li₄[B₇O₁₂]Cl boracite with Li conductivity. Rare earth atoms are arranged in the structure over the cubic F pseudolattice, whereas the analogous positions in Li boracites are filled with Cl anions. The squared optical nonlinearity of the new crystals is comparable with the nonlinearity of quartz, whereas the electrical conductivity in borates at 300°C exceeds 10⁻⁶ S/cm. __________ Translated from Kristallografiya, Vol. 49, No. 4, 2004, pp. 681–691. In vivo measurements of nitrogen,hydrogen, and carbon in genetically obese and lean pigs

Characteristic gamma-rays are emitted promptly by elements during exposure to neutrons. These emissions enable a radioanalytical analysis of the body's composition of protein (nitrogen), water (hydrogen), and fat (carbon). We have used this method in vivo to determine the body composition of obese and lean pigs (10 to 20 kg body wt) fed an altered cholesterol diet.     

Improved high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of ethylmorphine and its metabolites in microsomal incubations and cell culture media.

Ethylmorphine N-demethylation is used as a marker pathway in studies of rat cytochrome P450 3A and 2C11 biotransformations. At present, microsomal activities are generally measured by a colorimetric determination of the formed formaldehyde. In the present study, a high-performance liquid chromatographic method of separating and quantifying both the N-demethylated (norethylmorphine) and the O-de-ethylated (morphine) metabolites is described. Either samples are extracted with ethyl acetate or proteins are precipitated with zinc sulphate-barium hydroxide. Separation is achieved on a CN reversed-phase column, using a mobile phase of phosphate buffer (pH 4.5)-acetonitrile (90:10, v/v). At a flow-rate of 1.5 ml/min, the analysis time is 30 min. The limit of detection (ultraviolet, 210 nm) for ethylmorphine and its metabolites is 0.5 micrograms/ml.     

Optimal estimation of a state based on deterministic and stochastic discrete measurements

A problem of constructing algorithms of optimal estimation of states of a discrete system accounting for deterministic and stochastic measurements is considered. Asymptotic Distribution of Nodes for Near-Optimal Polynomial Interpolation on Certain Curves in R 2

Let E\subset \Bbb R ^s be compact and let d _n ^E denote the dimension of the space of polynomials of degree at most n in s variables restricted to E . We introduce the notion of an asymptotic interpolation measure (AIM). Such a measure, if it exists , describes the asymptotic behavior of any scheme τ _n ={ \bf x _k,n } _k=1 ^dnE , n=1,2,\ldots , of nodes for multivariate polynomial interpolation for which the norms of the corresponding interpolation operators do not grow geometrically large with n . We demonstrate the existence of AIMs for the finite union of compact subsets of certain algebraic curves in R ² . It turns out that the theory of logarithmic potentials with external fields plays a useful role in the investigation. Furthermore, for the sets mentioned above, we give a computationally simple construction for ``good' interpolation schemes. November 9, 2000. Date revised: August 4, 2001. Investigation of the stability of metal species with respect to liquid chromatographic separations

Summary For accurate speciation analyses it is important to know the stability of the respective species, especially in the case of metal complexes. Factors affecting the chromatographic stability of such metal species are investigated. By using thermodynamic models for complex formation and chromatographic retention equilibria the influence of species concentration, stoichiometry and excess of ligand is calculated and compared with experimental results for iron complexes (lactate, gluconate and citrate species). Iron citrate is the only species, that is chromatographed as 1:2 complex (metal: ligand), while iron lactate and gluconate are transformed to 1:1 species.
