Tungsten microcone arrays grown using nanosecond pulsed-Nd:YAG laser in a low-pressure He-gas atmosphere

Tungsten microcone arrays with a high aspect ratio are formed by the cumulative nanosecond pulsed-Nd:YAG laser irradiation of single-crystal tungsten under low pressure in an inert atmosphere. The morphology of the microcones and their density were strongly affected by the number of laser pulses. The microcones grew to a length of 20 μm with a diameter of about 1.5 μm at the tip after irradiation with more than 1200 pulses under our experimental conditions. They may have potential applications for emission cathodes in a field-emission display (FED) and in microelectronic devices. Electromagnetic moments of the doubly closed shell ±1 nucleon nuclei and on-line nuclear polarization

Electromagnetic moments of doubly closed shell ±1 nucleon nuclei were studied. Recent technical developments of the β-NMR was shown that was applicable for the polarized β emitters. Also, the implication of those new moments were discussed especially on the nuclear interactions and non nucleonic degrees of freedom.     

Dehydrogenative Diels-Alder reaction

The dehydrogenative cycloaddition of dieneynes, which possess a diene in the form of a styrene moiety and a dienophile in the form of an alkyne moiety, produces naphthalene derivatives when heated. It was found that a key requirement of this process is the presence of a silyl group attached to the alkyne moiety, which forces a dehydrogenation reaction to occur.     

H(x)TeV9O28]((5-x)-) (x=1 and 2): vanadotellurates with decavanadate structure

Two new vanadotellurates, [HTeV(9)O(28)](4-) and [H(2)TeV(9)O(28)](3-) have been synthesized and structurally characterized as tetra-n-butylammonium (TBA) salts: TBA(4)[HTeV(9)O(28)]·2CH(3)CN [triclinic, space group P ?1, a = 16.7102(6) ?, b = 17.4680(7) ?, c = 17.9634(7) ?, α = 74.412(1)°, β = 67.494(1)°, γ = 74.160(2)°, Z = 2] and TBA(3)[H(2)TeV(9)O(28)] [monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, a = 13.0013(5) ?, b = 19.157(1) ?, c = 28.453(1) ?, β = 97.222(2)°, Z = 4]. The results of the structural analyses indicate that the four O atoms that bridge two V atoms on the Te side are the most basic ones in the structure. The results of density-functional theory (DFT) calculations support this view.

Quantum set theory: Transfer Principle and De Morgan's Laws

In quantum logic, introduced by Birkhoff and von Neumann, De Morgan's Laws play an important role in the projection-valued truth value assignment of observational propositions in quantum mechanics. Takeuti's quantum set theory extends this assignment to all the set-theoretical statements on the universe of quantum sets. However, Takeuti's quantum set theory has a problem in that De Morgan's Laws do not hold between universal and existential bounded quantifiers. Here, we solve this problem by introducing a new truth value assignment for bounded quantifiers that satisfies De Morgan's Laws. To justify the new assignment, we prove the Transfer Principle, showing that this assignment of a truth value to every bounded ZFC theorem has a lower bound determined by the commutator, a projection-valued degree of commutativity, of constants in the formula. We study the most general class of truth value assignments and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for them to satisfy the Transfer Principle, to satisfy De Morgan's Laws, and to satisfy both. For the class of assignments with polynomially definable logical operations, we determine exactly 36 assignments that satisfy the Transfer Principle and exactly 6 assignments that satisfy both the Transfer Principle and De Morgan's Laws.     

Diffusion Coefficients of Tris(<Emphasis Type="Italic">β</Emphasis>-diketonato)ruthenium Complexes of Different Charge Numbers in Acetonitrile Solutions,Measured by Chronoamperometry

The diffusion coefficients of several tris(β-diketonato) ruthenium complexes in acetonitrile solutions containing a supporting electrolyte were determined by chronoamperometry. The diffusion coefficients of the charged complexes, which were produced by electrochemical oxidation or reduction, were also determined by double potential step chronoamperometry. Two kinds of radii of the complexes were evaluated. One was the Van der Waals radius and the other was the geometric distance from the center of the complex to the outer surface of the farthest atom. The latter quantity was determined from X-ray diffractometric data. The diffusion coefficients of the neutral complexes were discussed on the basis of the Stokes-Einstein equation. Those of charged complexes could not be explained by the theoretical equation presented by Hubbard and Onsager.     

Methods for imaging and analyses of intracellular organelles using fluorescent and luminescent proteins.

One of the important features of eukaryotic cells is the presence of intracellular compartments, organelles. Each organelle plays an essential role in the organelle-specific function; each cooperates with others for maintaining the vital activity of living cells. To analyze the organelle-specific functions, researchers have used many fluorescent and luminescent reporter proteins extensively. The reporter proteins have provided unprecedented insights into the movement of proteins and their interactions in the organelles. In this review, we summarize recently validated methods for visualizing protein localization, dynamics and protein-protein interactions, and for identifying a series of proteins localized in organelles using newly developed reporter proteins.     

Exponential decay of solutions to nonlinear elliptic equations with potentials

Exponential decay estimates are obtained for complex-valued solutions to nonlinear elliptic equations in \mathbbRⁿ ,\mathbb{R}^{n} , where the linear term is given by Schr?dinger operators H =  − Δ  +  V with nonnegative potentials V and the nonlinear term is given by a single power with subcritical Sobolev exponent in the attractive case. We describe specific rates of decay in terms of V, some of which are shown to be optimal. Moreover, our estimates provide a unified understanding of two distinct cases in the available literature, namely, the vanishing potential case V = 0 and the harmonic potential case V(x) = |x|².
