Darstellung und Kristallstruktur von Na2Mn3O7

Synthesis and Crystal-Structure of Na₂Mn₃O₇ Single crystals of Na₂Mn₃O₇ have been grown hydrothermally applying high oxygen pressure (p = 2 kbar). The new compound cystallizes triclinic; space group P1 ; a = 6.636(6) Å, b = 6.854(6) Å, c = 7.548(6) Å, α = 105.76(6)°, β = 106.86(6)°, γ = 111.60(6)°; Z = 2. The crystal structure has been solved and refined to R = 7.9% and R_w = 6.2% (diffractometer data, 1044 independent reflexions). The crystal structure consists of Mn₃O₇^2? anions with manganese coordinated octahedrally by oxygen. These layered anions are hold together by Na⁺ ions (coordination numbers 5 and 6).     

Determination of phenols in soil by supercritical fluid extraction-capillary electrochromatography

A new analytical procedure is developed to couple supercritical fluid extraction with capillary electrochromatography (SFE-CEC) to extract and determine phenols in soil. Ten phenols consisting of phenol, methylphenols (p-cresol and o-cresol), dimethylphenols (3,5-xylenol, 3,4-xylenol and 2,6-xylenol), trimethylphenol, ethylphenols (p-ethylphenol and o-ethylphenol), and o-isopropylphenol are investigated. The use of supercritical CO2 with 10% methanol as the organic modifier was found to give satisfactory extraction of alkylphenols from soil at 1200 p.s.i. and 50 degrees C for 45 min under a total extractant flow-rate of 0.2 ml/min (1 p.s.i.=6894.76 Pa). Baseline resolution was achieved for the 10 selected phenols under optimised CEC conditions at 20 kV in a mobile phase of acetonitrile-4 mM Tris, pH 7.0 (35:65) in a 45 cm (25 cm packed with 3 microm ODS) x 75 microm I.D. fused-silica capillary column. Using SFE with a 10-fold preconcentration factor, all alkyl-substituted phenols in soil can be determined with detection limits ranging from 0.0032 to 0.014 mg/kg and working range from 0.019 to 2.72 mg/kg. The SFE-CEC procedure developed has been applied successfully to determine phenols extracted from real soil sample contaminated with medical disinfectant. It will provide a rapid method for the direct determination of phenol and alkyl-substituted phenol in soils, with capability for confirmation of unknown peaks.     

Serum protein immunogenicity: implications for liver xenografting

The objectives of this study were threefold: (i) assess immunogenicity of donor plasma proteins following hepatic xenotransplantation, (ii) identify potential immunogens, and (iii) consider the implications of antibody formation against these plasma proteins in xenograft survival. We studied liver and heart xenografts in a concordant combination, hamster to rat. All grafts were examined at necropsy for evidence of rat immunoglobulin G (IgG) deposition. Cardiac xenografts were placed in recipients who had, or had not, been sensitized with hamster serum. Hepatic xenografts were placed in naive recipients to see if antibodies to hamster serum proteins could be eluted from the rejecting organ. Sera of immunized rats were examined for the presence of anti-hamster antibodies by immunoelectrophoresis and by Western blotting following sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) separation of hamster serum. Antibodies in sera of immunized rats were compared with those eluted from rejecting livers. Candidate antigens were identified by tandem mass spectrometry, sequence analysis, and reference to protein databases. Results showed that sera of immunized rats recognized a minimum of four different antigens in hamster serum by immunoelectrophoresis, and a minimum of seven by the more sensitive SDS-PAGE Western blot. IgG eluted from rejecting livers bound three of seven candidate antigens recognized by sera of the immunized animals. Sequence analysis searches revealed proteinase inhibitors in each of the three SDS-PAGE bands common to the above samples. All of these candidate proteinase inhibitor immunogens share a common catabolic fate, uptake via the lipoprotein-related protein (LRP/alpha 2-macroglobulin receptor (CD91). Sensitization to hamster serum proteins hastened cardiac xenograft rejection in 30-50% of recipients (depending on sensitization protocol). Vascular deposition of rat IgG occurred in all rejecting xenografts. Antibody binding to proteinase inhibitors could disturb their functional activity and contribute to the pathogenesis of delayed xenograft rejection.     

An expedient preparation of Stryker's reagent

A convenient and efficient preparation of Stryker's reagent, [Ph₃PCuH]₆, under homogeneous conditions using silanes as the reducing agent is detailed. The reaction time can be reduced to 1-2 h, and high yields of Stryker's reagent can be routinely achieved. The same method has been extended to the synthesis of [Ph₃PCuD]₆ using Ph₂SiD₂.     

Doppler-broadening measurements of microvoids at the Au/GaAs interface

Recent positron lifetime studies made on the Au/GaAs interface with an applied electric field returning a significant fraction of bulk implanted positrons to the interface have revealed the presence of microvoids( 1 nm diameter) at the interface. In this work an attempt has been made to study these microvoids by observing the Doppler broadening on the annihilation radiation coming from them. This is done both by observing theS-parameter as a function of applied bias and by applying the generalized least-squares method to the deconvolution of the annihilation radiation lineshape. The general conclusion is that the Doppler-broadened data are consistent with the majority of positrons trapping into microvoids, probably associated with grain boundaries. The data suggest that these open volume defects are more associated with the Au film rather than the Au-Ga alloyed interfacial region.Paper presented at the 132nd WE-Heraeus-Seminar on Positron Studies of Semiconductor Defects, Halle, Germany, 29 August to 2 September 1994     

Liquid chromatographic determination of the plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in PVC plastics

A fast, simple and reliable method for the analysis of DEHP in PVC products was developed using a one-step Soxhlet extraction prior to HPLC determination. The linear range from 1.25 /g to 250 mg/g of DEHP in PVC was found sufficient to cover the normal concentrations encountered. The reliability of the method was established by comparison with the ASTM method and no potential interferent was identified except a large concentration of DIMP.
