Characterization of calcium carbonate polymorphs with Ca K edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy

Ca K edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy was utilized for the characterization and quantification of calcium carbonate polymorphs and their mixtures. The advantage of the XAFS is the small sample quantity required for measurements, and a flexible sample environment. The near-edge XAFS spectra of calcite, aragonite and vaterite were measured with the conversion electron yield (CEY) method, and the obtained spectra showed characteristic features that can be utilized as fingerprints. The quantification of mixed polymorphs was examined by using a linear combination fitting of reference XAFS spectra. Though the quality of the fits was satisfactory, discrepancies in the evaluated values were observed between those with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and XAFS. The nonuniformity of samples may be enhanced by the surface sensitivity of the CEY method.     

A universal peroxyoxalate-chemiluminescence detection system for mobile phases of differing pH.

A universal peroxyoxalate-chemiluminescence detection system for high performance liquid chromatography, available for a variety of mobile phases, has been developed. The system consisted of a dual-head short-stroke pump and a chemiluminescence detector. The standard conditions using bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate (TCPO) as aryl oxalate were as follows. The first postcolumn solution was the mixture of 0.5 M imidazole-nitric acid (pH 7.5) and acetonitrile (1:4, v/v). The second was acetonitrile containing TCPO-hydrogen peroxide. These two solutions were delivered by the two pump-heads. After the pH of the column eluate was adjusted to the optimum range (6.5-7.5) by the first postcolumn solution, the solution was mixed with the second postcolumn solution. After flowing through a reaction coil, the chemiluminescence of the mixture was monitored. Using this system, a high sensitivity (fmol level) was obtained for perylene as an analyte with mobile phases having different pH values (2.0-8.0). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons became detectable to a high sensitivity even after the column separation using an acidic mobile phase. The detection sensitivity of nitrated pyrenes after on-line electrochemical reduction using an acidic mobile phase was also increased. This system might be available for other aryl oxalates by some modifications of the postcolumn solutions.     

The structure of arugomycin,a new anthracycline antibiotic part I. structural elucidation of degradation products,AG1, AG2 and AG3.

Based on ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR and mass spectral analysis and chemical degradation, the structures of degradation products of arugomycin (arugorol, AG1, AG2 and AG3) have been determined as shown in Fig. 1.     

Graft polymerization onto poly(methylvinylsiloxane)-bonded silica gel by gamma-ray irradiation

Poly(methylvinylsiloxane)-bonded silica gel was synthesized by condensation reaction between silica gel and the hydrolysis product of methylvinyldichlorosilane. Graft polymerization of styrene or indene onto poly(methylvinylsiloxane)-bonded silica gel was carried out by gamma-ray irradiation and compared with that onto silica gel. Homopolymer was found to be formed through a radical mechanism concurrently with an ionic mechanism in the graft polymerization. Probably genuine graft polymers are formed in the graft polymerization onto poly(methylvinylsiloxane)-bonded silica gel, while the product formed in the graft polymerization onto silica gel may be apparent graft polymers.     

The likelihood ratio criterion and the asymptotic expansion of its distribution

Summary Asymptotic expansion of the distribution of the likelihood ratio criterion (LRC) for testing a composite hypothesis is derived under null hypothesis and a correction factor ρ which makes the term of order 1/n in the asymptotic expansion of the distribution of it vanish is obtained. The problem is extended to the case of a general composite hypothesis and of Pitman's local alternatives. The asymptotic distribution of LRC for a simple hypothesis is studied under a fixed alternative. The Institute of Statistical Mathematics     

Anisotropy of Compton profile found in nickel oxide single crystal

The Compton profiles have been measured on a spherical single crystal of nickel oxide along three major axes using a 100 mCi ²⁴¹ Am source and a Ge(Li) detector. The anisotropy has been detected clearly and compared with a simple calculation.     

Synthesis and evaluation of 3-methyl-4-oxo-6-phenyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester derivatives as potent antitumor agents

For the construction of new combinatorial libraries, a lead compound was created by replacing the core structure of a hit compound discovered by screening for cytotoxic agents against a tumorigenic cell line. The newly designed compound maintained biological activity and allowed alternative library construction for antitumor drugs.
