Synthesis and properties of conjugated polymers containing 3,9‐ and 2,9‐linked carbazole units in the main chain

Novel conjugated polymers containing 3,9‐ or 2,9‐linked carbazole units in the main chain were synthesized by the polycondensation of ethynyl‐ and iodo‐substituted 9‐arylenecarbazolylene monomers, and their optical and electrical properties were studied. Polymers with weight‐average molecular weights of 3400–12,000 were obtained in 76–99% yields by the Sonogashira coupling polycondensation in piperidine or tetrahydrofuran (THF)/piperidine at 30 °C for 48 h. All the 3,9‐linked polymers absorbed light around 300 nm. The para‐phenylene‐linked polymer also absorbed light around 350 nm, while meta‐phenylene‐linked one did not. The 3,9‐linked polymers absorbed light at a wavelength longer than the 2,9‐linked one. The polymers emitted blue fluorescence with high quantum yields (0.21–0.78) upon excitation at the absorption maxima. The polymers were oxidized around 0.6 V, and reduced around 0.5 V. Evaluation of diffusional anisotropy and microscopic structure in skeletal muscles using magnetic resonance

The pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method is used for detecting the diffusion of water molecules in biological tissues. Because tissues generally have diffusional anisotropy, their diffusion properties are denoted by a tensor. In this study, we evaluated the diffusional anisotropy and microscopic structure in atrophied skeletal muscles using the PGSE NMR method. The left sciatic nerve was severed in twelve 9-week-old rats. Neurotomy caused neurogenic muscular atrophy at the left gastrocnemius. At 2, 4 and 8 weeks after neurotomy, magnetic resonance signals were selectively acquired from a 2 x 2 x 2 mm(3) voxel, which was located on the left gastrocnemius. The diffusion tensor, the mean diffusivity (MD) and the fractional anisotropy (FA) were calculated from the signals. A theoretical model of the diffusion in muscles was derived from Tanner's equation. The muscle fiber diameter was estimated by fitting the model to the measured signals. The measurements were also performed for normal rats as controls. No significant difference was found in the MD and the estimated intracellular diffusion coefficient between the control group and the denervated group. The denervated group had significantly higher FA compared with the control group (P<.05). The estimated muscle fiber diameter of the denervated group was significantly smaller than the estimated value of the control group (P<.05). These differences were found at 8 weeks after neurotomy. The proposed method is effective for evaluating changes in the microscopic structure of skeletal muscles.     

Design of Long-Wavelength Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers with Resonant Optical Pumping

An optically pumped long-wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with resonant optical pumping has been proposed. The proposed structure enables the dual-resonance of pump light (1300 nm band) and output light (1550 nm band) at the same time. It is shown that high pumping efficiency of ∼99% can be obtained by adjusting the top mirror reflectivity and the cavity length. This dual-resonance VCSEL (DR-VCSEL) may have great advantages of high efficiency pumping, low power consumption and can be fabricated by using conventional VCSEL fabrication techniques with reasonable fabrication tolerances.

Encapsulation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in Ba(2+)-alginate to form coated micro-beads and their application to the pre-concentration/elimination of dibenzo-p-dioxin, dibenzofuran, and biphenyl from contaminated water

We report preliminary data on the first use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes as adsorbents for the pre-concentration/elimination of dibenzo-p-dioxin, dibenzofuran and biphenyl from contaminated water.     

A new lignan from Balanophora abbreviata and inhibition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression

Six lignans including a new lignan (1), beta-sitosterol glucopyranoside and phenylpropanoids were isolated from the whole plants of Balanophora abbreviata Bl. (Balanophoraceae). Their structures were determined by NMR, MS analysis and other spectroscopic methods. Lignans (1, 2 and 4) showed potent inhibitory activities on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in RAW 264.7 cells.
