Ion‐Free and Ion‐Pairing Assemblies of Anion‐Responsive π‐Electronic Systems Possessing Directly Linked Alkyl Chains

Alkyl‐substituted pyrrole‐based anion‐responsive π‐electronic systems formed supramolecular gels and liquid crystals through effective π–π stacking and van der Waals interactions. The addition of chloride as a planar cation salt afforded ion‐pairing assemblies as soft materials comprising planar receptor‐Cl^? complexes and the cation.     

Ga-labeling of immunoglobulin G with high specific radioactivity

To obtain radiogallium labeled immunoglobulin G with a high specific radioactivity for in vitro use, a 67Ga source was purified by extraction from 67Ga-gallium citrate with butyl acetate, and a 67Ga-labeling solution was produced. This solution was then used to label a deferoxamine-immunoglobulin G conjugate. Both a very high specific radioactivity (872 +/- 56 MBq/mg) and a high labeling efficiency (94.0%) were achieved.     

Phenotyping of erythrocyte acid phosphatase and esterase D by high field strength isoelectric focusing on cellulose acetate membrane

Phenotyping of erythrocyte acid phosphatase (EAP) and esterase D (ESD) by cellulose acetate membrane isoelectric focusing (CAM-IEF) under a nonequilibrium condition is described. In an attempt to improve the method of CAM-IEF, we shortened the electrode distance to provide a higher field strength at a given (low) voltage. Various carrier ampholytes for EAP typing and various chemical separators for ESD typing were also tested. Good separations were obtained after 30 min IEF for EAP typing and 25 min for ESD typing. When applied to blood stains and stored for various periods at room temperature, the stains up to 8 months old could still be phenotyped for EAP and those up to 4 weeks old for ESD. CAM-IEF is suitable for routine forensic work of EAP and ESD phenotyping.     

Sugar Binding Effects on the Enzymatic Reaction and Conformation Near the Active Site of Pokeweed Antiviral Protein Revealed by Fluorescence Spectroscopy

In various trials for elucidating the physiological function of pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP), studies on the interaction with sugar are essential. The fluorescence titration curves showed that PAP retained the strong affinity against N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and two sites in one PAP molecule co-operatively participated in the binding. In the complex of PAP with NAG, Trp208 located at the entrance lid site of substrate came closer to Tyr72 about 0.3 Å. Furthermore, the fluorescence anisotropy decay measurement demonstrated that the segmental rotation of Trp208 was enlarged by the binding of PAP with NAG. Such conformational changes around the active site closely correlate with the enzymatic activity of PAP. The N-glycosidase activity of PAP was enhanced more than two times in the presence of NAG. The obtained results consistently suggested the enzymatic activity of PAP would be regulated through the conformation change near the active site induced by the binding with NAG.     

A new calix[5]arene-based container: selective extraction of higher fullerenes

[reaction: see text] A new double calix[5]arene successfully extracts higher fullerenes from fullerene mixtures. The syn isomer of the double calix[5]arene selectively captures higher fullerenes from fullerene mixtures. The elevation of the temperature more than 100 degrees C stimulates its conformational change to the anti isomer, bringing liberation of the captured higher fullerenes.     

A branch-and-bound algorithm for hard multiple knapsack problems

The multiple knapsack problem (MKP) is a classical combinatorial optimization problem. A recent algorithm for some classes of the MKP is bin-completion, a bin-oriented, branch-and-bound algorithm. In this paper, we propose path-symmetry and path-dominance criteria for pruning nodes in the MKP branch-and-bound search space. In addition, we integrate the ??bound-and-bound?? upper bound validation technique used in previous MKP solvers. We show experimentally that our new MKP solver, which successfully integrates dominance based pruning, symmetry breaking, and bound-and-bound, significantly outperforms previous solvers on some classes of hard problem instances.     

Comparison of flanking regions of the 5S ribosomal ribonucleic acid genes in Leptospira biflexa and Leptospira interrogans.

One of the genes encoding the 5S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) for the Leptospira biflexa strain Patoc I was isolated and sequenced. The physical maps of the 5S rRNA genes in Leptospira were constructed. The strains of Leptospira biflexa had two genes on their chromosome; these two 5S rRNA genes were located several kb apart and sequences flanking these genes were divergent. In contrast to saprophytic leptospires, maps in parasitic leptospires that had only one gene for 5S rRNA on their genome were highly conserved and the physical maps of the genes in almost all strains were similar.
