A remark on nilpotent Lie Algebras

Letf(n) denoted the number of essential parameters which are needed to classifyn-dimensional nilpotent Lie Algebras over the complex number field. Then $f(2n) \geqslant \tfrac{{n(n2 - 7)}}{6} - 2$ .     

Surgery on 3-manifolds with \mathbb{S} 1-actions

We study the topological structure of all 3-manifolds obtained by surgery along principal fibers of a closed orientable -manifold. As a consequence, we give alternative proofs of some classical results due to W. Heil and L. Moser. Moreover, we completely specify the Seifert invariants for the considered manifolds. Finally we classify the manifolds obtained by surgery along certain Seifert links and determine geometric presentations of their fundamental groups.Work performed under the auspices of C.N.R. Synthesis of 4-acetylisocoumarin: first total syntheses of AGI-7 and sescandelin

A practical synthetic route to 4-acetylisocoumarins and the first total synthesis of AGI-7 (5) and sescandelin (4) are described. The readily available homophthalate 8 was transformed to the vinylogous amide ester 13 in high overall yield. Upon treatment of 13 with refluxing aqueous formic acid, the desired 4-acetylisocoumarin (5) and its regioisomer 3-methyl-4-formylisocoumarin (17) were produced in a 3:1 ratio. After separation of the desired product (5) from the unwanted minor isomer, the enantioselective reduction of AGI-7 by borane in the presence of Corey's (S)-oxazaborolidine reagent afforded (+)-sescandelin (4) with a 93% ee.     

Versuche zur Herstellung eines «Bis(triasterans)» und Synthese des heterocyclischen (Tricyclo[4.4.1.01,6]undeca-3,8-dien-11,11-dimethyl)sulfits

Tentative Synthesis of ‘Bis(triasterane)’ and Synthesis of the Heterocyclic (Tricyclo[4.4.1.0^1,6]undeca-3,8-diene-11,11-dimethyl)sulfite The synthesis of the bis(triasterane) ( 1 ) has been tried; the reaction of ‘isotetraline’ (1,4,5,8-Tetrahydronaphthalene; 2 ) with diazomalonate yielded the tricyclic systems 5 and 6 , and not 4 . Hydrolysis of 5 gave the monocarboxylic acid 7 , and not the dicarboxylic acid 9 . The latter could be obtained from the dibromoderivative 8 , but 9 couldn't be converted to the acyl chloride 10 . The reduction of 9 with LiAlH₄ yielded the crystalline diol 11 , which was cyclized with SOCl₂ to the heterocycle 12 . The spectral data of the new compounds 5, 6, 7, 11 and 12 are reported and discussed.
