Real-time light scattering measurements of coherent island coarsening during SiGe/Si heteroepitaxy reveal unusual kinetics. In particular, the mean island volume increases superlinearly with time, while the areal density of islands decreases at a faster-than-linear rate. Neither observation is consistent with standard considerations of Ostwald ripening. Modification of the standard theory to incorporate the effect of elastic interactions in the growing island array reproduces the observed behavior. 相似文献

Small bimetallic Pd-Fe particles supported on a well ordered alumina film grown on NiAl (1 1 0) were studied focusing on the geometric, electronic, adsorption, as well as magnetic properties. The morphology, growth mode and surface composition were investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and infrared spectroscopy (IRAS) using CO as a probe molecule. Information on the electronic properties of the bimetallic systems was obtained by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These measurements were amended by in situ ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy to address the magnetic properties of the bimetallic particles. The subsequent deposition of the metals at 300 K varying the order of metal deposition resulted in two distinct bimetallic systems. Pd deposited on existing Fe particles forms a shell, however, FMR and XPS suggest that intermixing of Pd and Fe occurs to some extent. For the reverse order, a larger amount of Fe is required to coat Pd particles, due to the strong tendency of Pd to segregate to the surface of the particles. 相似文献

Like other close-packed noble metal surfaces, Ag(1 1 1) exhibits an occupied Shockley-type surface state that is believed to influence the adsorption of atoms and molecules. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we have directly probed this interaction by investigating the local CO distribution dependent on the Ag(1 1 1) surface state standing wave pattern forming in the neighborhood of strong scattering centers such as step edges or hexagonal holes. A quantitative analysis of the STM data reveals that the CO molecules are not arbitrarily distributed upon adsorption at 5 K; they adsorb preferentially near the minima of the standing wave pattern. 相似文献

A Schwinger-type variational principle is presented for the scattered field in the case of scalar wave scattering with an arbitrary field incident on an object of arbitrary shape with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The result is variationally invariant at field points ranging from the surface of the scatterer to the farfield and is an important extension of the usual Schwinger variational principle for the scattering amplitude, which is a farfield quantity. Also, a generic procedure, physically motivated by the general principles of boundary conditions and shadowing, is presented for constructing simple trial functions to approximate the fields. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a powerful surface characterization technique often relied on for quantification of surface species and coverages. Investigation of silicon microrods, considered a model for high‐aspect‐ratio structures, at different angles with respect to substrate normal was determined to have a significant impact on the relative sensitivity of surface‐bound species on rods relative to the base substrate. Comparison between planar silicon and microrod arrays demonstrates that the angular dependence is complicated and that careful studies must optimize conditions to differentiate between surfaces. In addition, the use of reverse angle resolved XPS, where the substrate is turned away from the X‐ray source, is shown to assist in simplifying the spectrum by removing underlying signal from the substrate near the base.
